What the ****?????

Dram, please explain!
when I was much younger, I used to play role playing games (dungeons and dragons... not the dirty doctor type :P) and for a while I was in to playing Warhammer 40k and Fantasy Battle desktop games and another Games Workshop game called Blood Bowl... I was painting them as a demonstration to people walking past as to what was involved with playing the game...

Thanks for clearing that up Dram....I think.

Dressed up like you would have been I cannot believe you did not approach the players!! :) :thumbsu:

What do people consider to be the greatest premiership in our history? With 16 to choose from there's bound to be a few differing opinions.

Though it was the year I was born and I have no recollection of it, through research and wearing out the video tape I believe 1982 is our greatest. A combination of being massive underdogs, it being our first back-to-back for nearly 70 years and it being the moment that we won a record breaking 14th flag make it stand out for me.

While '70 and '72 or even '95 could easily be seen as better, I reckon 1982 is one of the most underrated GF's of all time and signifies the moment that we became the greatest club in the league. When you look at where the club was 15 years prior that's an incredible achievement.

I'd love to hear the thoughts of those that were around to see it.

I have always felt '82 was a bonus premiership. Having won '79 & '81 I didn't think at the time we could back it up with another premiership in '82. At times in '82 we played some really good football (particularly some of our 3rd quarters) & at other times some ordinary football (the loss to Sydney in Sydney immediately springs to mind) & even the draw against Fitzroy in Round 1.

Of course the '82 2nd SF wasn't one of our better days, but we went into that game without both Bosustow & Johnston, who were suspended & it was for this reason, come GF day, I was confident that with both the Buzz & Dominator back in the side, who between them I considered to be worth 7 goals to the team (not personally on the scoreboard, but with what they created) we were in with a very good chance of winning.

In answer to the original question, was it our greatest premiership? I don't think so, it was just a case of our players having the self belief, based on their recent success, that on their day they could beat anyone.

You describe it similarly to Geelong's 2011 flag, and I consider that the best of their 3 for those reasons.

1979!

To beat the old enemy by 5 points in an absolute war of attrition was extremely satisfying in front of a huge crowd. The one on one duals that day were also amazing particularly Maclure versus Picken.

To top it off the Wayne Harmes incident!! Great day at the footy!

Nope... those guys are SCA or live role players... nothing to do with me :p

Whilst I know I should have known better I swear it was just an honest rookie mistake! :p

I've seen all of the Flags since 1968 and can say the thrill of watching The Blues win is never different. Each has a personality of its own like a long-time group of friends. Can I pick the best one? No. Can I remember the highlights? Yes. This will give DML legs and I look forward to reading your posts. :)

I was born in 79 so was a bit young for the 79, 81 and 82 GF wins. 87 was great but did not appreciate it enough as a 8yo.

Then as a 16yo my Dad and I may the trip across from Perth for the 95 GF. Arrived on the Wednesday, went to the final training session on the Thursday with thousands of others and just soaked it all in. I actually got to meet Kouta and Ang before training that day and they signed the hat I was wearing at the time, I still have it at home somewhere.

When a GF is a one sided affair you are quick to call it a crap game but when it is your team handing out the beating then it can't get any better. I remember before the game my old man kept telling me that he had a bad feeling about the game and thought we were going to lose. As a brash teenager with my old woollen Carlton jumper on with a #1 on the back, I told him we had nothing to worry about and its in the bag.

We then headed back to Princes park for the after match celebrations and I remember Earl Spalding getting introduced to the crowd and he walked on stage and smashed down a can of VB in front of the adoring masses. There were some people selling shirts that had come hot off the press that had the following written on the front "there are only 2 types of supporters in this world, Carlton supporters and those who wish they were" with "Premiers 95" on the back.

We ended up at Naughtons on the Monday afternoon and all the players were out the front on the footpath including matthew richardson who was a housemate of Brad Pearce at time I believe. My old man grabbed a jug of beer and two glasses and let me have a couple of cold ones with the proviso
"don't tell your mother".

I should speak to my dad about his GF memories. He drove across the nullabor for the 79,81 and 82 GF's.

1947, beating Essendon by a point is good anytime, but in a GF absolutely magnificent.

Me thinks that if you remember the 47 grand final, you sir outdate some of us oldies by a great deal... well done mate :D

I have been to all of our grand finals since 1979. Each one was special.
As 1979 was the first one i witnessed live this is the one i remember the most. I was sitting on the wing in the MCG members stand when the ball was going past us towards the Collingwood end when the siren went. I remember Jezza being carried off on a stretcher and he was in fact in the change rooms when the siren went, he came out with his ankle bandaged and couldnt walk. It was a cold, wet day. I will never forget the Wayne Harmes knock on to Sheldon for that goal.
Good memories, how i wish for more success.
Other finals games i will never forget are the 1999 Prelim against Essendon and this years Elimination against Richmond.

This is not a particularly happy GF memory, but it's worth sharing I reckon.

After being either too young, or broke for all of the great GF's that the Blues appeared in, I could finally afford to go in '95. In the week leading up to the game, my car stuffed up, so I arranged to borrow a mate's car to get to the game on the day.

So, I get to my mate's place nice and early on the day, grab his ridiculous HQ V8 holden a head in to town. This thing had the most ridiculously heavy steering and clutch, but hey, I was going to a GF that featured the blues ... who cares, right?

When I drive to the 'G, I always park in the multi-level car park in Grey street between the hospitals there. So, I do that again, only on this day, I have to go 'round and 'round the ramps all the way to the roof (fifth level, I think, and remember ... heavy steering and even heavier clutch). Finally I get parked, walk down the stairs and to the ground to enjoy a comfortable GF win by the mighty blues!

Yay, we won! And I'm absolutely stoked walking back to the car after soaking up the post-game atmosphere. As I walk to the car park, my mind starts working out what I'm gonna do next. Will I head for PP to enjoy the post-game celebrations with other Carlton fans? Will I head for my mate's place where a bunch of my Carlton supporting mates have watched the game on TV and then head for PP with them? Choices, choices ...

So, I get to the car park, walk up the stairs and hop in this ridiculous car. Start the engine, put it in reverse, ease off this stupidly heavy clutch and start reversing out of my spot ... then ... BAM! The clutch explodes! I spent the next 4 hours waiting for some other mates to come retrieve me, then manouevering this heap of shit out of the car park and towing it back to my mate's place.

Needless to say, I never got to enjoy much of the post-game celebrations. :(

Bummer, should have caught public transport.
