Not at Carlton, or in the VFL, but the last player I saw using the drop kick in general play was Merv Hobbs, who was coaching Williamstown in 1979 & played 1 game only that season, after 5 years out of the game. Not only did he use the drop kick on a few occasions in that game, but he was also using the stab pass with great success. I felt like I had been transported back to the '60s that day.

Manton puts us on the board.

Young Whitnall, from Lalor, gets our 2nd.

Looking ok.
Surprising how many detestable and loathesome characters Essendon had in their 99 side. Whole ****ing team of them !!!

Pretty sure that it was also the day that Jeff Kennett was informed by the Victorian public that his services were no longer required. It was a big old night in the London Tavern.

All of them seasoned tough bodies . Cept for skinny . [emoji5] . Fraser Brown spinning back too goal.

Wallis takes them on and is pinged. You'd think that he would learn his lesson and not do it again. We shall see.

Whitnall's goal at the end of the game was amazing. Such a tough shot from out there.
I'd have thought you'd wanna be on the blues around about then........

I just happened to stumble upon this on youtube...1947 GF, Blues vs *. The skill levels on these guys is amazing considering it's back in 1947.

Won't give away the result, but think 1999 prelim final :)

What a classic! Love the “perfectly executed 30m punch pass”.

And history does repeat...

As thylacine60 knows I don’t like to name drop. At the recent Member’s forum I had a beer with the son of the Carlton player who kicked the winning goal. Wore the number 10.

Love stuff like this. Thanks for posting. What about the Essendon sashes going in different directions? Classic.

DML bites back.

Thanks Bamboo Harvester

I notice King Richard featured in some of those highlights. I think he owned the Newsagency in Snell Grove, Oak Park.
Isn't it fantastic watching footy videos from another era, still amazed at the skill levels from 70 years ago!!

I'm pretty sure your correct, King Richard did have the newsagents in Snell Grove a few doors up from the fish and chip shop. Just around the corner across the road from the railway station in Waterloo Road was the TAB, where Jimmy Buckley and myself used to pop down to at lunchtimes sometimes when we were doing our year 12 (HSC) at Oak Park High.

Now that is a trip down memory lane :)
