Defence:

mixed reports on Penny playing
If he's out it will leave our defence very thin, esp if kosi doesn't come up too.

I suggest the defence will look a bit like this:

voss, maguire jones
frankie kosi black

That does leave us with perhaps our weakest defence for the season.

Kosi still looks fragile and slow, and will be required to support knobel in the ruck, as will goose, that will put addition pressure on the midfield to flood back and control the flow of ball through the game.

On the positive side with Rocca doing nothing in the magoos, and leigh brown little more than a stripling himself, the roos forward line looks equally brittle. If the roos do decide to push the Saints forward line and put Sav in the square, it may cause some problems IF we lose control of the midfield. Mckernan also is due, and if he thrown forward, I expect Kosi to run with him.

Saints may try goose on Mckernan to expose his lack of speed, however goose may be used to chop out floating b/w CHB and FB, given his phenominal courage. If it comes to a shoot out, voss and maguire will have to carry the defence.

Midfield.

Brent wannabeHarvey, adam simpleson, Wells etc form one of the hardest working talented midfields in the competition and with Stevens out, that does take away about 20% of their talent. I would say, at least in the first quarter, their midfield is the equal of ours. However, we have a depth of talent, they'll find hard to match, and our rotation will start to hurt them as the game goes on, as it did against adelaide, where roo and mcleod found themselves just running out of steam. Ball, banger, black, thommo, jones, even moyle, will compete to run them off their legs. That will be hard given brent harvey and adam simpson are too of the fittest guys going around. With no rotation and little depth, I expect us to draw away as the game goes on. However with no dedicated taggers, simpson and their harvey should rack up about 35 possies each, while our mob get about 20 to 25 spread over 5 or 6 players.

don't be suprised again to see 3 or 4 on ballers/runners benched at some parts of the game.

I expect us to control the corridor, and concede the wings to north, forcing them out wide, which is exactly what we did to Essendon and Adeliade, a dangerous strategy, but one that has paid off so far.
I expect us to draw ahead as the game wears on in the midfield. I don't think GT should ever underestimate the North boys, they conceded a massive lead to us, and nearly over ran us late last season as our boys started liairising around. It took a massive haul by FG and a last quarter from banger harvey straight out of the 97 archives to save the game.

Forward
With archer gone, king gone, their defence looks thin on the ground, leigh Colbert, if he plays, will have too much work to do, guys like hale are too new and weak to compete with the FG, Snowy, Hamill and manchild. I think if we can just lob in the general direction of our forward 50 these guys should dominate. If we start losing the midfield, I suspect GT will switch snowy to CHF and manchild to the wing to generate drive. Winning the forward line is a monty if the midfield wins. I do worry however that our boys will start party tricks and or if we do win this game, carry the party tricks in against brisbane.

odds on North are 3.10 and saints a shoe in at 1.30, I think north are not that short, and I expect us to win by about 20 points, or lose by less than a goal.

Never under estimate the shin boners, and after getting smashed by Sydney, I expect them to come out and hit us hard, this game could be a physical pre cursor to brisbane, and reminicent of the essendon game..

The best thing so far is that our opposition have really come at us hard and tried to intimidate us physically. In the end they have gone away looking a little foolish.

Of all the teams we have played, Adelaide were easily the best team. To come off a 5 day break and win in Adelaide is a great achievement on its own but the Crows really played good footy and would not be 0-4 if they had played like that in the earlier games.

Like you said that backline does look a little vulnerable but it's taken an injury to Max to give Goose the chance to step up at CHB. Petrie and Brown will need to be stopped so it will be a good test. Let's hope Penny can get himself right, thought his effort on Saturday night was very courageous.

A small concern to come out of last weeks game was that we were beaten in the centre clearances for the first time this season and quite convincingly at that. Fortunately we did better winning the clearances around the ground but if the Kangaroos finish with 13 more inside 50's like Adelaide had I'm not sure if we can win again.

I agree with you that their midfield is very good but they don't look like they can rotate as many people through it. Firrito and Rawlings will both get negating roles, probably against Harvey and Hayes, which means the likes of Ball, Powell, Dal Santo and Black will have a lot of responsibility on their shoulders.

Providing we get the ball out of the middle quickly, I don't think there is a defender in the league that can beat Gehrig one out. Along with Riewoldt, Hamill, Kosi (if Penny plays) and Milne and Guerra as the crumbing forwards we should do OK. Then again, if we don't win the ball out of the middle they won't get the opportunity.

Good report Dan. Now put in your votes for round 3 on the vote here thread at the top of the page. ;)

I can't see us trying to intimidate the Saints with Archer out, King struggling and a fairly young line-up a touch short on agro.

Petrie has struggled a bit so far. Would like to see him play inside the 50 for most of the game, as he is doing a lot of work up the ground. Which is great, except when you're short of tall forwards.
Brown should be at full-forward, but you can bet he'll spend 5 minutes per quarter in the ruck, 5 on the bench, 5 up forward and 5 on the ball. Should be used only in defence of attack.

We have been pretty good at the clearances so far. Porter back is a huge inclusion; he gets few taps but scraps hard and it suits our midfield.

I'm not sure how many midfielders you rotate but we've been putting names like Simpson, Grant, Harvey, Stevens, Harris, Wells, Rawlings, Firrito,M.Stevens, King, Makepeace, Sinclair and Sansbury in there on a weekly basis. I would play Firrito on Harvey and Rawlings on Ball. Your forward line worries me but if we can put enough pressure on your midfield it might not be that big a problem. If we play like last week, Gehrig will be looking at 10-12 goals. Watt will play on him, Colbert on Hamill and Baird on Riewoldt, with Sansbury on Milne and maybe Sinclair on Guerra.

Finally, I'm tipping St Kilda but Penny out gives us a chance. If we can attack hard right from the start and some of our mid sized forwards like Motlop and Jones play well, as well as getting on top in the middle, we have a real chance.

Thanks Orson - great contribution to the thread.

I am generally impressed by the level-headedness of the kangaroos fans - you are no exception.

Thanks...just a shame I was miles off with my predictions :p

Attack hard right from the start? Definitely not

Mid-sized forwards have a good day? No

Having said that, we had some chances today but ultimately couldn't take them. The kicking for goal was poor, as was most aspects of our game.

No complaints though as the better team won. Was annoyed by our slump in the last 15 minutes however.

With Stevens back next week, your midfield will be able to rotate more efficiently.

The Saints looked good today, but I must admit that we fared well with the umpiring decisions (especially in the first quarter)
and the kicking let you down as well.

Good Luck

Hope the Roos get back on track next week.
