Draft pick 6 is cursed

Noticing how many threads have been started about Chris Yarran and his spudness I was interested to see who else has been drafted at 6 over the last few years and lo and behold I think it's cursed. Take a glance at this list of luminaries that have been drafted at pick 6:

2008 - Chris Yarran
2007 - Danny Myers
2006 - Mitchell Thorpe
2005 - Beau Dowler
2004 - Tim Williams
2003 - Kepler Bradley

Six of the best at pick 6? Hmm not quite but it does show that whoever has pick 6 this year, are certain to pick up a spud of the highest order.

Therefore, assuming no team get's a priority pick, avoid 11th on the ladder this year:thumbsu:

Wow, you're right. I've never thought of this before. Infact i'm quite sure you're the first person to ever think this.

Let it be known from this day forward that Bigeasy of Big Footy is the most original poster on the site.

Now I know this topic is sensitive for Essendon, considering you have two of the 6 in there but take a step back and try and understand what I'm saying here. Or should i have put things like LMAO, LOL, ROFL in there somewhere to make it easier for you.

Ignoring the spelling errors (wow...shooting below 50% - fair effort)

Bradley - Athletic tall wingman/ruck. A bit of a Tweener, a run-all-day tall, but kicking/nous never really came on. Still think he would be best suited to the 08-model Richo-role, but worry his kicking lets him down. Seriously, 03 was a pretty poor draft though.

Williams - The top 5 were a class above, only order to be decided. Williams was the obvious pick for #6, but has had all sorts of injury troubles. When he's fit and out there, adds an extra element to the Dogs. Will be a player, if he can get (and stay) fit.

Dowler - Pre-Injury was (fleetingly) in #1 discussion. Cannot under-estimate the effect that kind of injury (likened to bad car smash) can have on a player; especially one who wasn't particular big on physicality beforehand. I like the look of him, good skills and endurance - decent mark. Needs a huge confidence shot but has the skills.

Thorp - I'm bias, I admit it, but he could (should) be the answer to our woes. Still to have 12 months without serious injury - is quickly turning into a lemon due to injury woes. Has lost strength, pace, kicking depth and power, endurance, etc. Is a worse player now than he was at 18. That said, if he can get right physically, the potential may still be there.

Myers - Honestly don't know enough about him. Looked a promising prospect at juniors, but haven't heard much on here. Essendon fans will know better.

Yarran - Give the kid a chance. Very slight, and probably not suited to a team that is SO conscious of one player up forward. Would like to see him play a back pocket/flank role as a rebound player - has good skills and pace, and a suprisingly good mark for his size. That said is still a long-term project (for a smaller player who are often drafted virtually 'ready-made')

You can't judge the value of a pick when injuries destroy a career - however with Dowler the injuries were known beforehand; and with Thorp, conspiracy theorists may suggest his injuries were covered up by AFL medical staff. (As a result of this, I believe clubs are now permitted to undertake their own tests on up to X amount of players - prior to that draft they had to rely on AFL-facilitated testing).

It's actually over 2 games a year, but he's had most of them this season.

He'll be a gun when we get our side up and going. A tall wingman who can float into defence and make spoils :thumbsu: or go forward and take a grab :thumbsu:

I used to think Beau was a complete spud and was suffering from the pick 6 curse, but he's actually been pretty good this year if you've watched him.

Thorp is a combination of not having come good yet (as with most KPPs) and being ruined by injuries. He's out for the year again too.

Probably the worse pick there is Myers. He's fully fit and can't get picked.

Fair assessment.

Wow! Is there anything any Hawthorn player can't do?

Don't kid yourself. Thorp is easily the worst out of that batch. Even worse than Bradley.

Yarran was terrific in that role against the Crows.

Ran pretty hard and linked up through the middle for a lazy forward pocket.

You could watch Yarran kick of one step and hit a teammate on the chest all day.

Daniel who?

Dowler - Pre-Injury was (fleetingly) in #1 discussion. Cannot under-estimate the effect that kind of injury (likened to bad car smash) can have on a player;

Very much so.

Infact that likened to a bad car smash that it was a bad car smash.

I will never accuse you of overstatement Simon - ever.;)

So he's a frontrunner:thumbsu:

So Dowler's pretty good after playing 6 games in 4 years but Yarren is crap after playing 3 games in his first season as an 18 yr old ???

Typical podgeyhodge logic .................

I think the point is, Dowler has shown something in his games.

Ashley Sampi and Damien Cupido were both pick 6 with good skills too.
