West Coast have picks 23 and 28 and are also interested in McIness. Uncles Rob Wiley and Michael Brennan both played for the club .

Seems Freo have Bootsma and McIness in their sights at pick 20 , so if McInnes falls to 23 we may take him !

No point on spending a decent pick on an average (middle of the road) prospect for a position we don't have a massive need for. Also it's obvious he can't kick and if you can't do that you shouldn't be considered seriously for a position backward of centre.

Forward flankers, KPF's and balanced midfielders are bigger needs.

in regards to talia i dont think anyone is saying he's not a worthy option at 23 but in relation to drafting you also have to reference picks against list needs and while our list does need another key position back it certainly doesnt need yet another backman with poor skills. Or have you forgotten our 2010 season or even north melbourne this season.

I think North are lacking runners off HB with skills. We have Hurn, Smith, Sheppard and Butler who are good users. I don't expect a Talia or Glass/MacKenzie to be doing the higher risk kicking out of defense. They stop their man, take marks or kill contests and play within their capabilities and let the smaller and more skillful guys do the harder kicks. Probably only Scarlett is without a noticeable flaw amongst KDs.

Some peoples imaginations are going crazy, he's not going to have enough kicks anyway to cost us massive amounts of goals a game. Then there's the fact he'll improve his skills and like Glass, learn to play it safe when kicking short or just clear the area with a booming kick.

I'm not too fussed if we take him or not, but people are overreacting with their concerns imo.

You can't play a duel ruck setup without rucks capable of having an impact on the contest while they arent in the ruck. That doesn't mean they substitute a tall forward within your starting 21.

McGovern might be the next Lynch but that doesn't mean much given Lynch is one form slump away from calling it quits.

This year's draft is pretty much light on everything. For KPP's it usually takes 3-4 years to get to AFL standard (see EMac and Schoey), and with Glass getting close to retirement age and both Brown and Emac capable of missing stretches to injury, it's smart to actually think of coverage before it becomes a necessity.

Yeah, but I don't see much wrong with waiting one more year. It's not as if we're going to see the next Jack Darling slip down to pick 23. If anything, we'll end up with the next Beau Wilkes. Seems a waste of a good pick to me when there should be plenty of decent midfield options available just so we can say we have (theoretical) cover for when Glass retires.

There seems to be massive question marks over the KPP that will be available to us this year so I reckon we should just avoid the risk and go for best available, regardless of position. Grab a KPP defender next year. Then we might get something decent and worthwhile who might actually provide some cover for when Glass retires.

In all honesty if its just for injury cover beau wilkes with our last rookie pick would be very sensible.

*sigh* It's not just injury cover. It's succession planning and list management. It took Glass, EMac, Schoey a few years to become solid at AFL level. All we have is Brown to cover for Glass when he retires, and he's very injury prone. It's good to look to set up other options now. And for those criticising Talia's kicking, Glass was a horrible kick in U18's and took him at least 5 years to become ok in this area. Now he's actually composed and competent when kicking.. if they could kick they'd be forwards!

Whats funny about including Lycett as a KP forward? The Eagles have requested that he be played as a forward in the WAFL for his development, I wonder why?

How many high quality 200+cm key forwards are there in the competition? Just Kurt Tippett? How many from premiership sides?

Lycett may develop into a Tippett type but the odds are stacked against it. He is succession planning for Cox and is being taught forward work because he'll understandably be spending some time there whilst partnering Naitanui.

3 guys, 2 positions, all under 24 years of age. It's far too early to be burning selections on succession plans. We should instead be looking to draft talls onto the rookie list or a mature age player onto the rookie list as depth.

Once Glass goes we have 3 guys to fill 3 positions. With teams more inclined to rest a ruck forward, there will be 3 tall forwards in a lot of forward lines quite often. It's too risky to just cross our fingers and hope for the best.

We desperately need a KPD.

We need a KPF, but not as urgently.

We should be willing to deviate from best available to get a tall defender, but we shouldn't deviate too far. A mature-ager in the rookie draft could be a good option, before drafting an 18 year old KPD next year.

I'm not advocating a big movement away from best available. But if best available is another HBF, I'd prefer drafting a slightly lower rated tall defender.

Not too keen on Manson tbh. Would prefer a KPP/pacy, skillful mid/slider/best available + M.Newman at 23 + 28. Ideally we should have an extra pick where we could take a punt or draft a mature ager like Hutchings, Horsley or Gilligan coz I doubt, the first 2 especially, will be available in the RD.

I'd be stoked with D.Smith but he's quite unlikely to be available. So I'd be happy with any of: Lockyer, McInnes, Crozier, Markworth (unlikely again), Haynes (again unlikely), C.Smith (unlikely), McKenzie with Newman. I don't know much about Murdoch and Merrett but they sound like good prospects too.

EDIT - I just watched Murdoch's highlights on the AFL website (There's none available for Merrett). He looks like a very nice type from what's on there. He's quick, agile and tallish (listed as 189cm but looks taller) has a very nice kick and could play HFF or wing. That's what I took from the highlights..

You're right, I'm not a Tippett fan whatsoever and my wording was probably a bit ambiguous.

What I was more aiming at is his output has been clearly superior to any other 200+cm forwards having kicked 55 and 46 goals in a season before.

Whilst real quality KPD's are always welcome, the simple facts are that players of the quality of Scarlett and to a lesser extent Lake (quality defender AND quality ball disposer)are rare now and will become rarer. The type of football played at junior level mirrors that of AFL where KPD's are instructed to kill a contest and wait for reinforcements.

This puts greater onus on contested ball winners of which WC are well stocked and then ball deliverers, of which they have in very short supply. IMO, WC should target those players who have some footspeed and can deliver the ball with precision - a bit like how Hawthorn approached drafts a few years ago.

There are several kids who are well above average kicks and who should still be around in the 20's, and who can move through the fwd line and rotate through the centre. Unless a real quality tall slips (and Talia is not one of those) then look to next year when the quality of talls is much greater and WC's pick (s) are likely to be closer to the point end of the draft, rather than picking a tall this year just for the sake of it.

Just pick up Newman for x factor and ability at 28 or 23 and draft the best kick with the other.

More quality kicks the better. Was alot of talk on the board about Mckenzie before.

As for your picks it seems you guys are looking at quite a few options (Hill, Merrett, Murdoch, C.Smith than anyone who slides). Than you have the talls in Talia, Mcinnes should be on the top of your list and available at 23 and Newman as that small forward. Seems Trunbridge would have been looked at if you delisted another but not with picks 23 or 28 now.

Nothing personal , but he sounds a pretty soft option who would ideally be a late 40 s pick

We should have used our Comp pick this year , having 55 this draft would give us Turnbridge / Davis / Hill . Anyway the 2012 draft is strong , we will use it next season I would imagine !

Ryder, Drew Petrie, David Hille,Matthew Kruiser and the now retired Ottens.

The sub rule now means you can't afford to carry a second ruck on the bench to 'pinch hit', the second ruckman must be able to play forward and play well.

Out of Naitanui and Lycett who will be taking the bulk of the ruck in 2> years time once Cox has retired? I'd suggest Naitanui, Lycett willplay more forward minutes than NN.

Sure this may not be the draft to chase a KP backman but we do need to get one in the next two drafts or trade periods. Both Brown and EMac are injury prone, that only leaves Schofield after Glass retires.

As for mature KP rookies they are band aid solutions and won't bring quality to the squad.
