Draft Prospect - Luke Mitchell

I was thinking the other day, we need another KPF so the names of Day and Darling come to mind but no Gold Coast will pick them up asap with one of their several first round draft picks. So i set out to find a forward that could potentially work well with Watts..
This is where i found Luke Mitchell,

Luke Mitchell – 195cm, 83kg – Key Forward – Calder Cannons
Mitchell is a key position forward who played four matches for Vic Metro in the 2008 NAB AFL Under-16 Championships and also two games for Calder in the TAC Cup at the end of that season. In 2009 he played 12 matches for Calder and was instrumental in their success. His 28 goals ranked him equal 14th on the TAC Cup goal kicking ladder and his 80 marks at an average of 7 per match was elite, which included 26 contested and 21 on the lead.

I personally think Mitchell is abit of a man child who might struggle when he gets to AFL, with players who are as quick and strong as him. It will be interesting to see how he tests at Draft Camp. We should be able to pick up a very decent KPP with our first round draft pick, possibly one of the South Australian talls in Gorringe or Lycett

He has been out injured all season so far, so it'll be interesting to see what condition he returns in. I believe he will be back at Calder this weekend.

Didnyt relise that but i went to the TAC grand final, he looked pretty promising.

Guess that means he finished year 12 last year? (if he hasn't, I'd have thought he'd be playing at Melbourne Grammar this weekend).

Was captain and B and F winner at our school last year. Is finished now. Thats the reason he only played 12 games for Calder Cannons.

No worries - this is just my opinion so feel free to debate it - I wont take offense! In fact I would love for someone to convince me otherwise..

Darling is also a bit of a 'man child' but he doesnt have the height to take to AFL level. At 190cm he is shorter than many midfielders but he definately doesnt have the game to take to the midfield.

I can see him being a Bate type 3rd forward but we all know we have enough of those.

He has great presence and leads to the right spots, strong overhead, good kick for goal and loves applying forward pressure. I just think he doesnt have enough height or speed to be a quality key forward target or midfielder at AFL level.

Basically the main concern for me with Darling is that he plays and moves like a big bodied key forward which is fine at the lower levels, but he wont be a big bodied key forward at AFL. His strengths will be shut down when playing on key AFL defenders and he will need to learn to play as a 3rde forward instead of the main target.
