I was just wondering who you guys think the eagles will take with their 1st round Draft pick ( If they dont trade it)

I think they will take Moody, dose anyone no his height and weight

Moody 187cm 80kg, I dont think they will take him with their first pick, they would be hoping he is still there after that.

I think if any of these guys are around for the first pick (around about pick 10 we'd take them);

Farren Ray, Matthew Moody, Tenance (sp??), Troy Chaplin and perhaps that Callum Burges kid.

With the second pick (around 26) we'd be looking for:

Josh Willoughby, Beau Waters (I'd love to get him), Nick Potter

after that;

Jake Farfuro, Kerley (sp??).

that's what i reckon anyway...

187 and 80 kgs is crap, he isnt that big to be honest.
To be honest I think it's going to come around to how the boys perform at the draft camp.

Clubs these days are looking at drafting athletes that can play football pretty much.

I dont think the Eagles will have much choice with the WA boys as our main ones will be gone by end of 1st and 2nd rounds.

If the WA players aren't around, I wouldn't be surprised if we took Colin Sylvia with our first pick. He should go about #10-12 which is when we will have our first pick.

Not so now, had the head eagles sports science guy (Glen Stewart or something like that, forget) give us a few lectures at Uni this year and he said The eagles and most other AFL teams are now moving back towards choosing footballers who have reasonable athletic ability, not athletes who can play footy.
ie emphasis is on football smarts, anyone can teach an athlete to kick a footy but you cant "teach" real good football smarts. However you can via intense training and conditioning etc made a player more athletic.

dasler confine your comments to what you know, Moody is 187/80 I was standing along side him when he was measured and weighed.The question was asked and the right answer given.
The WA boys will not all be gone by the 1st and 2nd Round's, perhaps you might like to tell us less informed who they all will be?

Haha, 'the croad approach' great term....

I agree though players need footy smarts, you watch croad and he doesn't think like a footballer, he can't lead properly, doesn't judge the flight of the ball, can't read the play and his awareness of what's around him is shocking.
He is an athlete, which is why he looked good running off half-back, and probably why Hawthorn traded him....they couldn't see him developing into a top KPP player.
Just compare his movements to a Brent Staker, Paul Medhurst or Justin Longmuir who are all 'natural' footballers and they read the play superbly, know exactly whats going on around them and look better because of it.
That should all be taken into consideration come draft time...

I wouldn't be complaining if we did that.

Assuming we hold onto the draft pick, I would really like to see us pick up Moody. Last year the guy was regarded as a prodigy, some (some = people on Bigfooty ;))were saying he would have gone top 5 had he been eligible last year. Now all of a sudden he's not rated top 10? He has talent and would be given time to develop, why not take him?

I don't think we'll get Hay for our first round pick.

Comprare to Chick, Hay is younger, better, with more potential for improvement, and he is a KPP.

We gave up pick 8 for Chick, so we'd have to do better than pick 12 for Hay.

Why not give our team a year or two to develop. We are still a young side.

Players such as Staker, Selwood, Lynch and Johnson are only in their first full year of AFL

I think we have the nucleus of a great team but we need to be realistic about our goals. We have played in finals for the last 2 years against all expectations. Look at the last 3 drafts and you can see the good young talent that is going to build on our already good team. This year we need to see what is on the trade table but hold on to our first pick. I think that there may be a few suprises in the draft and we need to be ready to take advantage of the best player that comes our way. Sure it would be nice to have Hay, Jacobs, Lucas, .... in our team but we need to weigh up what we have and look at the improvement they have already made to see the potential we have. Players such as Glass, Judd, Sampi, Kerr etc were not expected to play as much football as they have as yet but they have come along so well we get complacent about how long it takes to become a good player and start expecting players in their first year to start having an immediate impact on the game. Maybe we have been spoilt with players such as Judd, Staker and Kerr. Our rookie list this year has played really well and most deserve elevation, but as history shows few do. If Johnson, Lynch, Hansen, Selwood and Seaby
can improve over the off season I think we have the makings of a great team but trading away first round draft picks for overpriced players is not the way to improve.
