I rate Greeves as number 1 Tosser in the draft

Editing my original comment. I was a bit harsh myself here in my reply and there was more context to this that I've been made aware of.

However - I still don't think we should be straight up insulting 17 year old kids on a public draft forum. I'll leave it at that.

It would be more correct to call these half season highlights as Sullivan Robey didn't get his CTL call up until round 12, but what an impact he had once he got settled. Probably the biggest draft bolter since Clayton Oliver 10 years ago, Sullivan had a fairytale final stretch of the season, not just with his brilliant personal run of form but also providing the catalyst to spark an Eastern Ranges team that went from good to great, stomping through the finals series to take out the CTL premiership.

Small sample size in the CTL. But I don't think there has been a draftee this year that has been that consistent and that much of a weapon in back to back to back games like this kid. His 6ish games is better than any other 6 games you can drum up with from another draftee.

Between Steele, Priddis and Mitchell you've got 2 Brownlows, 5 All Australian jackets and 6 B&F awards. Maybe their lack of pace did hurt them late in their careers but you're doing pretty well if you pick someone at #2 and they win a Brownlow and make at least one All Australian team, even if they don't go very well when they're on the wrong side of 30.
the game has changed significaltly to when those sorts of players were dominating. Its really been the last 3 or so years that transition has become priority #1.
The game is all about transition now, take 25 year old Tom Mitchell in todays game he wouldnt be nearly as good, teams would structure their midfields in a way that hes not getting 35 touches per game like he used to.

Imo he looked way better in the midfield, far more damaging.

If im running the team then McCarthy is never playing half back ever again, midfield only.

Hes an outside/transition mid with great foot skills that we really dont have in any other player. Hes in his mid 20s, hes got a tank to play a full game, and he was a midfielder for all of 2024 in the VFL so he is familiar with the role.
Exactly what we needed, couldnt have been a more perfect addition to our midfield tbh.
Which is why we are definately taking duursma who will slot into his half back running defender role.

Interview with Tylah Williams

Really do hope he ends up at West Coast along with Banfield and his other NGA mates

Our recruiters do need to draft the best players available at each of our picks without necessarily being swayed by any obligation to take those players were linked to. But, bigger picture it is important that we do put ourselves in the best position to enable us to add them to our list

It’s possible an early bid comes for Williams such that we could arguably get a better player with the pick we lose by matching so that’s out of our control somewhat

Banfield and, to a lesser extent, Evans probably don’t receive a bid until after pick 37 meaning all we have to do is make sure we have a vacant list spot

Walley probably doesn’t attract a bid so happy to sit and wait for the draft to conclude so we can add him straight to the Cat B list

Is evans that good or is he someone that is our nga ? Is he better than rodriguez or swadling? I feel like we cant match bids for williams banfield and evans

I dont think Sharp turns out to be Dunkley, I think thats the absolute best case if everything goes his way.

Im not necessarily saying we are set, im saying we dont need a guy like Sharp to fix our contested ball stuff. Id prefer us to take Robey at pick 2, who along with basically all of our young mids is very capable of winning contested ball.

If we assume Harley and McCarthy are locks to be at the least very good players through the midfield for us, then we really only need 1-2 more and the midfield is competent. Say Hewett and Robey(who id prefer we draft), and then 1-2 of the rest of the mids we get(Hall/Gross/Dev/Banfield x2/Evans/etc) come on as midfield rotations or role players and we are covered.
No team has 4-5 genuine A-grade mids aside from the Lions in their priviledged position with f/s and academy kids
How are you gonna say it’s unlikely Sharp makes it to that level but then just assume our other young prospective mids make it?

That being said, people talk about Sharp as if he's a low risk pick but I don't think that's the case. If he doesn't develop much more physically and doesn't become a productive inside mid, then he's probably not going to be a decent AFL player, whereas some other guys with better athletic profiles have more options around the ground. Here's a RookieMe write-up on Will Phillips, who was just delisted by North after being selected at #3 overall in 2020:

The profile looks very similar to Sharp, right? Highly decorated junior career, best "pure midfielder" in the draft year, excellent ability in finding the ball and operating in tight spaces, but somewhat limited athletically relative to his peers and lacking in versatility around the ground. That's not to say that this type of player will be a flop, but there's the inherent risk that they've already peaked athletically and end up not being able to have the impact they did as juniors when facing bigger and more athletic players at AFL level.
People bring this risk up a lot and while there are pure inside mids that don’t cut it, there are many other outside/utility/athletically gifted players who don’t as well.

As long as the bid is after 13, which we all pretty much know it will be, then we're only giving up 34 and/or 41 (depending where the bid comes)

Even if it costs us both, reckon its a no brainer to match for Williams.

And as you say high chance we wont need the points to match for Banfield, just the list spot. Those 2 should end up on our list.

Good interview with young Williams, seems like a really level headed young man.
Did I read between the lines that there are 3 NGA and 1 FS going to be picked by listening to that interview.
No mention of the other candidates, sounds like WC have informed them we will take them!
At the end of the day we have picks and have the strategy to meet wherever they are bid on.
Agree that Williams is the most likely to get an early bid.

100% this.
If draft experts actually watch Sharp he s the best inside mid in the draft, but its not his only skill.
He has the speed over short distance and IQ of a top mid to do all the things that the good ones do.
He has good spatial awareness, great hands, can see and use other players around him as good as you could want, he has played forward a lot when resting and letting other players in the SA team take time in the midfield and he finds space easily and has good forward craft.
Sharp has been Pidgeon holed a lot because he doesn't have the athletic profile of Duursma, but Duursma doesn't have the inside mid craft that Sharp has.

Sample size is very small in his draft year. His 1 early game in the WAFL colts he was the best mid against SF which only had Whan.

Apparently he turned a few heads in a pre season game as well.

Looked ok in his AFL Academy game before injury but seemed to be battling already going into that game.

I personally think he was the most upside of all our NGAs/FS and has done enough to warrant selection. He has trained abit with the AFL team so they should have a fair idea of his capabilities.

This, he is probably the most talented of the NGA/FS players but injury has curtailed his season.
If he comes into next year injury free he is going to surprise a few imo.

Masten 2.0! 😍

Who else has worked in the team store and ended up being drafted by us?

Been watching more CDT highlights his talent is undeniable, his games vs sandringham and oakleigh chargers we're seriously impressive. He's a natural footballer, which i feel has been overlooked, he's not some gangly big man that struggles with the fundamentals of the game. His acceleration is Nic-Nat esque, and so is ability below his knees, both traits allow him to act like another midfielder in a lot of plays. He's also quite aggressive and not afraid to throw his weight around, which bodes well, definitely not a Tim English type ruckman. His kicking skills are also very good, including his set shots. He's got a nice ball drop and normally hits his targets. The one clear weakness in his game that i could see was his overhead marking. I can definitely see the hype, and i think he'll flourish playing AFL.

pick 1 or 2 for sure

I’d offer 13, 41, and 2027 second for 5. Maybe even throw in Saints 2026 second for a 2026 third back.
Keep the Saints F2, it’s important with the new bidding rules and our 2026 NGAs, but otherwise I like your thinking. Sounds like Richmond’s pick 4 may be more likely.
