"A grade" is a relative measure by I would suggest a winning team needs 3 elite midfielders. AA squad level.

Swans - Warner, Guilden and Heeney.✅
Lions - McCluggage, Neale, Ashcroft (older) and Dunkley✅
Freo - Brayshaw, Serong, Young (perma injured) and Bolton (not a mid) ❌
Suns - Anderson, Rowell and Petracca (Petracca wasn’t on the team) ❌
Pies - Daicos, Daicos, de Gooey, and Pendlebury (Sidebottom was but not any more) ****ing lol you’ve named at most two AA mids, that’s being generous and calling Josh a mid ❌
Cats - Smith, Holmes and Dangerfield Danger is far from AA squad ❌
Port - Butters, Rossey and JHF (Wines was but not any more) JHF isn’t quite AA squad but I’ll pay it ✅
Dogs - The Bont, Richards and Liberatore. ✅

I think Hawks and Crows not progressing to the GF was because they are missing having enough elite mids. Sometimes you can very happily get by with elite forwards who can run thru the midfield.
You’ve named 4 teams with 3 mids currently at an AA squad level, 3 of which didn’t make finals.

Something to ponder.

At this stage, Dursma isn't a midfielder, Hewitt is miles away and Warners plays for the Swans last time I checked.
Sure, but we’re not competing right now. What would you give the odds of 1 of those, or any other draftee or any other player on our list becoming an A grade mid on our list by 2028/29.

I’d give Warner alone a 60% chance to happen.

It's not about when we're competing.

We have the worst midfield in the comp and we ain't going to get better unless we fix it.

Just an uber negative outlook imo, one of Duursma/Hewett reaching AA squad level is more likely than not to happen.
I can see them becoming AA level players, Duursma as a wing/outside player and Hewett as a half forward with midfield stints. Neither as a pure mid.

A draftee isn’t fixing it in the next two years though, it doesn’t happen.

JHF was 10x the prospect of Sharp literally had 11 clearances in a sanfl prelim and struggled his first two seasons, as 18/19 year olds cannot sustain contest work against men.

Fair, I think that could be enough with the right role players though. Look at Collingwood, they have one A grade mid in Nick and then an A grade wingmen in Josh.

Hewett, at the moment has shown no qualities whatsoever to be AA and Duursma hasn't even played a game.

FMD

Neither has McCarthy, a fine player off the HBF and is needed there. He's a link up distributor not a coal face scrapper.

Hewett struggles to top 15 disposals and generally speaking plays 2 decent quarters a game.

To be frank Reid himself hasn't demonstrated a capacity to be a full time midfielder, naturally he's a burst athlete and the condition he presented in last year left a lot to be desired.

Hewett has shown the ability to win clearance, burst from the middle, take bounces and kick goals from 55 at AFL level.

You don’t do some of the stuff he did this year if you aren’t a very very good footballer.

Essendon game proved to me that he will be AA squad level if he can stay fit, get full preseasons and improve his endurance base.

Duursma is pick 1 I don’t think it’s unreasonable to give him a 50/50 chance of being AA squad level 🤣

Do their percentage chances that they become aa squad level and add them together for me. I think your have to be a massive Debbie downer for the number to be below 50.

Has Hewett even played one elite game? I couldnt be any more disappointed with a player on our list.
He's a young guy coming back from a significant foot injury?

Shit takes, Hewett hasn’t been able to have a preseason since he came into the AFL due to a well reported foot injury.

Despite this, he had a very good year once he got midfield time post his round 3 injury averaging 17.4D, 3.5CL, 3.7T, 0.59G including elite performances vs Essendon and Dees.

AA HF and should have been norm Zac Bailey averaged 20D, 2.4cl, 2.3T, 1.6G this year at the same age he put up 13.4D, 0.7CL, 2.5T, 0.7G.

Hmm I sense a divide between us…

Some want a 187cm midfielder ranked at pick 5 in the open draft.

Some want a 200cm forward ranked at pick 2.

I come to you with a solution, a middle ground if you will.

What if there was a midfielder who also played forward… whose height at 192cm and ranking at pick 3 falls in the middle of the two players being debated. Not an athletic beast like CDT, but not a plodder like Sharp. Somewhere in between. The perfect balance.

His name is Sullivan Robey

The JTR movement landed us our lord and savior Harley Reid. It now returns in a time of great need…

Just Take Robey 🙏🏽

NWM, Daicos, etc are not coal face scrappers either?? McCarthy brings something pretty damn similar to those guys

Not an ability issue, its an endurance/consistency issue. He can do it

Did you not see him in the second half of this season?? Lmao jfc dude Reid was incredible, and hes been doing full time mid basically the entire time hes been in the AFL

Imagine him with a full preseason, he would be genuinely in best player in the comp talks

Imo Evans coming onto the list for so cheap(I think he should be a good player for us) puts Robey down a peg in the needs column, puts CDT back at the best option at pick 2 imo
