Re: Drafts Thread

If possible, I know you probably would be against it and would rather draft a KPP prospect or a ready made KPP, would anyone be up for drafting the newest Selwood??? They say he is the best of the lot and if he is better than Joel I would love to have him at the club over a KPP. In saying that a KPP would be good for another round but if he fell to us would you take him or want him???

If it is true that he is the best of them all then we can expect (or hope) that he is gone well before our first pick. However it would be great to have him here if he really is that good...it's amazing that should he not go to Brisbane, West Coast or Geelong that 1/4 of the clubs will have a Selwood brother.

Re: Drafts Thread

FWIW, I don't think Scott Selwood is regarded as a better footballer than Joel.
Looks like we will get a selection within the top 10 so there will be a few other players that we would look at before Selwood.

Re: Drafts Thread

I did a cut and paste off Weaver's thread on the Draft's page of who I thought we should look at - they are in Weaver's order not necessarily ours:

4. Chris Masten (Rover)

Rovers tends not to go too early but Masten is simply too good to pass on. Might not be as sharp as Murphy or as dynamic as McLean but deserves to be in that same sort of early pick company. Pace is OK, wins huge amounts of the ball in tight, uses it well and brings teammates into the game. Can flat-out play and clubs will regret getting too clever and letting him slide. Got an armchair ride from Leuenberger last year - not this time where Palmer owes him a bevvy.

6. Steve Gaertner (Wing / HBF / Kef Def)
Athletic freak who needs to be taught how to play, where to go, how to get the footy and where to kick it. That said he is 196cm, can run like the wind and leap tall buildings in a single bound. Someone will take him as a project player and it will be very early on. If he learns to kick he will compete with Jarred Brennan and Lance Franklin for highlight-reel time. Better prospect than the likes of Tom Williams who went mucho early too.

8. Dave Gourdis (Key Fwd)
Impressive CHF who presents well, covers a fair bit of ground and can also get the ball at ground level. Vert good set-shot for goal. Makes the play well - reads the switches of play early and gets on his bike to offer himself at HFF/Wing. Moves the ball quickly when he gets it.

9. Scott Selwood (HBF / Rover)
A much blunter weapon than Joel. Scott is a blue-collar grunt who knocks people over and runs through packs. Plays a little too much on HBF for my taste but his stints in the centre have been encouraging. Probably doesn't run and carry enough - when he does it is because people have jumped out of his way. Shapes as a Daniel Harris type, one-paced inside thug who can lockdown opponents, cruch packs and get the ball going forward.

11. Tom Collier (Key Def / Ruck Rover)
Has a reasonable record at CHB where he is a good stopper. What will attract AFL clubs is his ability to influence games when cast as a makeshift ruck-rover. He has good foot skills (on the right at least), can run with the ball, and can find it in the packs. Decision making can get better but defenders who can make a spoil and then switch into midfield-like mode are pretty important in modern footy. Might drop a little because he was elligable last year and overlooked, so there are some question marks there.

12. Ben McEvoy (Ruck / Fwd)

At 199cm he is not a super-tall ruckman. As a forward of defender he lacks a bit of pace to become a permanent fixture at either end. Could easily get caught out as being in-between AFL positions. That said he competes well, can take a mark, reads the play superbly enough to thrive in the kick-behind-play role. Good kicking skills means he can be trusted with the footy.

14. Brad Ebert (Centre)

Wouldn't have found the footy at the Champs if they tied a bell on it and let him start 10 minutes before everyone else. That said he was heavily tagged and didn't quit on his team. Good bloodlines, good junior pedigree, and 187cm inside midfielders who can move, kick well and offer leadership are far, far rarer than people might imagine. Might well be the lone member of the SA squad drafted this year.

17. Robbie Tarrant (Key Fwd)

It remains to be seen if the AFL clubs are still interested in old-school gorilla FFs. Tarrant has shown some remarkable bursts of form for his club. Thrown defenders about like confetti and waged one-man warfare against backlines. At 196cm he is tall, he is physical, he will bulk up, and roam about the forward-50 letting people know he is there. Not as quick as Barry Hall or Fev
but from the same school.

I chose these guys b/c I think we need 1) a hard bodied inside mid, a ruck or a tall who can take a grab

Nice, i especially love the reference to Brennan, you just never know if he is going to have a brain explosion for a game or 12. Makes me salivate at the prospect of another mid 90cm tall that doesn't know where to kick the ball or run to, but at least he's another backman, something our team is lacking in. Should be good cover if Everitt, Hargrave, Griffen, Wight, Harris, Morris, McMahon, Williams or Gilbee ever get injured. Can't wait to see him debut in 2012:thumbsu:

*sorry, pretty tired, in a sarcastic mood.

Yeah - he was the one I tossed up about, but to me guys like that you can't pass up - their upside is just too good - for mine I tink next season we'll see Everitt and Hargrave play forward more, so if we managed to get this guy and he stayed fit - we'd slot him into the backline like we wanted to do in Willo's first year.

Draft Idea's

I started a thread on the AFL board on idea's for a better draft system. One guy came up with this. It is a bit left field but I thought it was brilliant. No need to tank and all clubs get a fair crack over time in this system. What do Dogs supporters think of this system?

ARL system is not as good as our current system. NBL system seems fairer but it can keep bottom teams on the bottom of the ladder. I ran a thread with a suggestion of left field which is this years draft picks should be in this this order.
1. Fremantle
2. Bulldogs
3. Geelong
4. Melbourne
5. St. Kilda
6. Richmond
7. Collingwood
8. Hawthorn
9. Carlton
10. Kangaroos
11. Adelaide
12. Essendon
13. Brisbane
14. Port Adelaide
15. Sydney
16. West Coast

Fremantle never winning a flag first and West Coast winning the year before last. When you win the flag you go to the end of the line that is the fairest way. Too many supporters have waited a lifetime to see their club win a flag. I would not wish that on the dockers fans maybe the pies fans. But even the pies would eventually win under this system.
;)

Re: Drafts Thread

Given our superstar head recruiter the obvious choice is either:

Masten - we need another smallish type running player - but he could be the best player available at the draft.

or

Steve Gaertner - the project player who doesn;t know where to go.

Bring it on Scotty.

Re: Drafts Thread

I dont rate Gaertner's kicking at all.

He and Partick Veszpremi trained with Carlton as part of the AIS program - and while Veszpremi's skills were sublime, his aerobic capacity wasn't great (as you would expect from a TAC kid training with an AFL outfit) - and Gaertner's kicking was woefull. Even in this years carnival he was constantly missing targets and floating his kicks.

Gaertner is also very very skinny.

Very interesting that Weaver would have Gaertner at 6. He'd be a 2nd/3rd Rounder IMHO.

FWIW I think Tom Collier would be a good fit for the Doggies - reminds me a lot of Andrejs Everitt, can never have enough "attacking" defenders.

Re: Drafts Thread

I'd be quite interested in Ebert as well as young Selwood and Rhys Palmer. Wonaeamirri is one I think we'd look at too, but perhaps as a second round - although he's been an impressive seniors player at Norwood this year and could potentially go a bit higher.

I don't think we'll go for a ruckmen or a KP with our first pick, although who knows.

Re: Drafts Thread

I think Scott Selwood IMHO is one of the most overrated players in this years crop. For some people to deem him as the most talented of the lot is just wrong. While I wouldnt be unhappy to draft him (at #21) I don't think he deserves the wraps of being inside the top #10.

Re: Drafts Thread

Quite a few before last years draft were saying the same thing about Joel.

Saying he was over-rated? Joel? Really?

I am not sure about that. He was very highly rated and widely regarded as the 'best' overall player in the draft class (along with Gibbs) before basically missing the 2006 season with injury. The injury obviously scared a few clubs off, but he was always going top 10.

I very much doubt that Scott will go that high, but he isn't a bad player.

I like any other bulldogs supporter, want us to win a premiership and I can see how this system would allow it to happen more easily for all clubs. In short however, I don't think it is feasible as we may as well just hand the cup around each year as this system will put the premership cup in the hands of the best recruiter at each club.

And the problem is?

Re: Draft Idea's

Personally I think the fairest system is to award the number one draft pick to the club that has gone the longest period of time since they won a premiership......and the club keeps getting that pick until they win one.:thumbsu:

hey, HEY, people... Clayton has gone a long way towards erasing his "I cant draft talls" reputation with Rowdy Everitt. He wasnt expected by anyone to go first round, but clayton said "heres an athletic, skilled guy who knows how to play footy" and bit the bullet and drafted him. I think Rowdy is going to be outstanding.

We know clayton will hardly draft anyone who isnt athleticly gifted or skilled, but at least with everitt he has shown some respect for footy-nous.

Can't agree with Palmer - to me he sounds like a clone of Ray, Gia, Harbrow, Lynch - will be a great finisher, but not what we really need.

Re: Drafts Thread

Find us the shortest, fastest, skinniest, can bounce a footy, non-victorian, clean-cut, flanker-type in the draft, and he is ours.

Re: Drafts Thread

Palmer is a 6 foot nuggety type who can win his own ball and aggressive around the stppages. Got a good sidestep and baulk and change of direction which is vital in close. Quick over the first few steps. Not express speed but good acceleration.
But will also run forward of the ball and be damaging. Good endurance as well.

He is a little bit older than some other midfield prospects this year and was playing in the dominant WA team so that needs to be looked at. How he finishes off the year will determine if his form at the U18s was a purple patch or is "his level". Playing seniors in the WAFL now.
