Drafting- How Could it go so Wrong?

Agreed. Players that "explode" onto the scene are often playing for bottom clubs, where they are thrown into the deep end due to lack of strong competition for spots. If they're the only options, of course they're going to get the footy.

And that's where we get shivved drafting key position project players from Victoria.

We blood them the right way with longer-term development in mind, lots of training (essentially bodybuilding) and valuable SANFL experience so that when they do earn their place they're well and truly ready for it, but five minutes in they see their U18 Vic Metro/Country teammates playing game after game for dud clubs and all of a sudden they get 'homesick'.

I have become very annoyed with our drafting. I heard the other night we drafted Marty Mattner in front of Nick Dal Santo i think the coaching panel of the club needs to go back and take a look at what we have missed out on. Pavlich was a big miss for us and in future we need to grab the talented players still available. There are a few young crows at the moment you show promise and this could be a sign that Neill Craig is drafting better players now such as James Sellar, John Meeson, Johno Griffen and Kurk Tippett.

I would say my biggest disappointment with the crows recruiting

and to be honest i'm not bagging them because they have done a great job with what they have had to work with IMHO

but i really wish we could just pick-up a guy who walks into the team and delivers - a little bit like VB but maybe with more flare :D

Johncock was probably closest we have had to that

Seriously I'm stoked with what we have atm and I hope things continue like this. I also officially earmark Mackay as the player of all players to watch on our list. ;)
It would be nice if hamstring boy could ever get on the park though.

No doubting his gunnish skills, and gunnish personality, but I just want to see him play again!

It has still got me -stuffed- how this guy could have possibly slipped to pick 48. I mean you've seen him play Drummond... we got Knights at pick 56 who had queries over his kicking and injury problems as a junior iirc, but Mackay appears to have everything down to an exceptional standard. Are we missing something?

was very thin and not ultra quick.

...thats about it?

I know I haven't, and it doesn't sound like you have either.

perhaps you're a little premature?

Yeh you’re probably right. He’s quite thin and it will probably be at least 2 years before he has a real impact at AFL level. Van Berlo arrived at the club a similar build but he managed to play 11 games in his first season. If Mackay hadn’t of suffered his hamstring injury he wouldn't have been without a shot at making his debut IMO.

In regards to his speed, while he’s not ultra quick, he's not exactly slow either. In the TAC Cup last year he was in the elite category for contested possessions, a great sign. So not only does he have good skills and great vision, he can also win the hard ball as well as being an outsider player who is damaging with his disposal.

A great prospect. :thumbsu:

Drummond I would Seriously doubt that ......Iam a HUGE fan .....but I count as a weakness of his that he doesn't get the hardball .... doesn't tackle

I've seen a few games and he WAS best descibed as an outside player .....but I'm confident the Adelaide mentoring will turn that around

not every player need to be an inside player

welcome to the board

however i would like to correct a couple of your statements which may have lead to you incorrectly becoming "annoyed" with our recruiting:

(i) Mattner was a rookie selection - i think you meant Reilly but Reilly has developed into one of our key midfielders now (and an inside midfielder too!)

(ii) re Pavlich - NO club picked him - in fact the other 15 clubs could have chosen him BEFORE we even had a pick (because in 1998 each club could select only one 17yo and as we were premiers in 1997 then theoretically we had the last pick)

As some consolation at least with our 17yo pick we got McGregor (as compared to eg Port (Adam Morgan).....etc ,(I have the full list of 17yo if you're interested to see how all clubs fared)

Sorry mate but he's quick. I don't give a **** about the tests at draft camp, I'll tell you what I see on the field, and that is a player with genuine leg speed. Not Pearce or McLeod quick maybe, but definitely quick enough. :thumbsu:

oh, I'm not doubting he may be "cousins" style quick (able to find plenty of space and what not) without being explosive over the first 20 meters. I wasn't critisising him, just trying to remember a few of the things I read about him when he was drafted. size and burst pace seemed to be his only real negatives - and since his size isn't a massive concern and most of the time he'll be recieving the ball while already on the move they're not huge detractors to me.

I really do look forward to seeing him play in the next year or so. :D

he said his speed was one of his strengths so hes either quick and he was just off on the day of the draft camp or he just rates himself above what is reality.

I saw him play at Norwood and he is quick. Draft camp means nothing. If he 's quick in games all is well. :thumbsu:

I think Drummond is right. If he hadn't been injured he just might have got a game or two this year.

Very talented player who reads the play superbly with great evasive skills and good disposal.

I really liked the look of him.

ok i have a plan. Im gonna go to the next crows training session, steal his training bag and make him chase me around footy park. I will have a speed gun set up on a tripod. I'll report the results back to this thread.

In the game vs Norwood he had about 8 or 9 possessions in the last quarter, and about half of them would have been contested possessions. I have no issues with this aspect of his game, and when he adds another 10kg it won’t be the slightest problem. And I find this interesting...

In nine TAC Cup games last season he averaged 22 disposals and was one of the best players at winning the disputed ball. He averaged an elite 11 contested possessions per game.

I agree with you Drummond. I've seen him play in both the TAC GF where he was possibly BOG and also live at Norwood, and he didn't play an outside game on either occasion.

Cant wait till we see him winning the ball out the middle and bursting though the pack, through the middle of the ground at lightning speed and dobbing a goal from 50. We don't see that at the crows often enough anymore.

Exactly. :thumbsu:

And as Capitalist said, it’s not like we need everyone to be an inside player. Thompson, VB and Knights win a lot of the disputed ball, as does Reilly these days. As you said Mackay has good skills and reads the play well, and the game vs Centrals he played on a wing and utilized these skills beautifully. He’ll be a damaging wingman in time.

For me it's about being both and inside and outside player when it is needed for the team. That is what our club has developed with it's new breed of midfielders.

The only downside I find with Mackay is that he seems to have stolen Bodey's hair dye  either that or the team played a prank on him and dyed his hair!
