Apologies if this has been covered before, i hadn't seen it if it has...

Just wanting to see what others think of how dropping the ball is being handled lately... To me it doesn't seem to be handled.. or getting paid.

It has become far to common for my liking for a player to take posession of the ball, then get tackled only for them to drop the ball and throw their arms out to each side trying to milk a free kick...
AND I NEVER SEE IT GETTING PAID FOR DROPPING THE BALL

I also noticed the other night i think during the Melb/Blues game one of the Melbourne players arguing with an ump over it... the conversation something along the lines of
Melb Player 'He dropped the ball'
Umpire ' Doesn't matter he made an attempt'

now making an attempt is all well and good.... but surely players still have to dispose of the ball legally??

It is a massive frustration for me and I was wondering what others thought... or if it was just me that noticed?

Yeah, it shits me to tears, but it's not paid anymore, the rule is dead in the modern game. :(

Geelong/Collingwood are the best 2 sides in the comp at dropping the ball.

Geelong also takes it a step further as 95% of their handballs are what I would call a throw. Gone are the days when your left hand is to remain stationary, now its basically a left hand throw with your right just tapping the ball as it goes past.

Prior opp: ball must be legitimately disposed of.
No prior: an attempt is good enough.

I think the problem is what a legitimate 'attempt' actually is. Yeah, there's too much latitude atm. Incorrect disposal is nearly as much a problem as non-tackles and illegal tackles being rewarded with htb frees.

I think I started a thread on this after we played Carlton, you guys are masters at is as well.

You don't need to dispose of the ball properly anymore, when you get tackled, or you're in a stoppage, you can effectively throw/push/shove it forward to keep it moving.

It's bullshit.

I find small forwards seem to be particuarly good at it, Milne, Froddo from Freo, Monfries all seem great at grabbing it only to drop it cold without even trying to dispose of it legally

This has become more and more ridiculous as the season has gone on. Attempting to handball or having the ball dislodged and throwing are not the same thing. Terrible direction the game has gone in regards to this interpretation. Pin an arm, just throw it anyway. Really gives me this shits. :thumbsd:

...and be given a 3 match suspension :(

There is no such rule as dropping the ball, nor has there ever been

Unfortunately, the way interpretation works in 2011, just making an attempt is legitimate without prior opportunity.
Making an attempt has always been lgit if there is no prior.
The trouble is they now consider the ball being "knocked loose" in the tackle not to be the ball carriers fault/responsibility. So the second you get tackled you drop the ball (not my fault), don't have to dispose cause I don't have it, can't get pinged for HTB cause I don't have it.
Comes back to the debate about whether there should be a prior op rule or just holding the ball if you get caught regardless. Incorrect disposal should be incorrect disposal.

Was at the Geelong Essendon match tonight.

All night supporters from both sides are calling out "Ball" and getting frustrated as tackles aren't being rewarded.

They were pretty consistent that throwing, dropping anything at all was "play on".

Then they'd ping the poor bloke on the bottom of the pack.

I'd say 95% of the crowd had no idea, reckon the umps are idiots and weren't happy with it.
