News
Fremantle youngsters Marcus Drum and Garrick Ibbotson have agreed to terms to remain with the club until 2009.

Drum, the club’s first selection in the 2005 NAB AFL National Draft, 10th overall, played 5 games in his first season and stamped himself as a player of the future by taking out the Beacon Award as the club’s best new talent.

Coming to Perth from country Victoria has required a big lifestyle adjustment but it’s one the teenager has embraced with open arms and is pleased to be staying on at the port club.

“I’ve been well looked after since I have got here and I now find it home over here so it wasn’t a hard decision at all to stay,” said Drum.

“I made the decision on my own and then I told the parents about it and they were all happy for it.”

Drum didn’t miss a beat last year and got a taste for AFL after debuting against the Swans in Round 13.

“It was more than I expected. I set down to have one game as a goal last year and anything more than that was a bonus. So it was good to get five games and it was a real thrill.”

Drum is currently focussed on playing at league level in the WAFL with Perth Football Club and is hoping with continued good form for the Demons he will earn a recall to Fremantle soon.

“My form, I think, is getting better every week and hopefully if I can continue that and play some consistent football and you never know what is around the corner as to getting into the senior team,” said Drum.

Ibbotson, a pacy midfielder, was selected with Fremantle’s second selection (no. 26 overall) in the 2005 National Draft. A local boy, he is wrapt to be given an opportunity to continue his AFL career at Fremantle.

“When I first got drafted there was probably more chance of me going away than there was staying home but now that I am here I’d like to stay as long as I can,” he said.

After playing WAFL colts football in 2005, Ibbotson stepped up to play the majority of the 2006 season in the reserves, finishing second in the best & fairest. He has been playing consistent senior football for the Sharks this season and is likely to make his debut for Fremantle in 2007.

“I think last year was just a year to sort of have a year in the system and play with East Fremantle and just try and develop as much as I can and I think my development has come along steadily.”

With his development well underway, what surprised Ibbotson the most was the intensity of life as an AFL footballer.

“Being at home I thought it would be not so hard not having to travel so far and stuff but it’s a lot of time at the club. I spend most days there and nearly full days as well so it’s a lot of time taken up but I enjoy it.”

good news! both exciting young prospects who can hopefully have great careers with freo.

Yep. Great news.

I think the club have done the right thing with Ibbo. They didn't push for him to play senior footy in the WAFL last year, and they won't rush him into the Freo team this year. They are letting him grow confidence, and work on his weaknesses at the lower levels in the hope that when he does make it to the seniors he can bring a well rounded game.

After his third pre-season he will also be physically ready next year to make a big impact.

Channel 9 news here (Adel) said that Freo are after Surjan who is out of contract at the end of this year! Power trying to get Surj to sign now.

Surjan is from South Freo - that's no doubt that's why they are saying Freo are after him... Trying to push his value up, and the media will always say that clubs from a player's home town are after them... whether it's true or not. Schammer was being chased by both Port and Adelaide when his last contract was up according to the WA media.

Surjan has talent - would be nice to see him stay loyal to the club that drafted him, but if he wanted to come home I would hope that Freo would have a crack at getting him (without going overboard at the trade table). I know his parents' best friends, and they reckon he's a loyal lad who has said he wants to be at Port for the long haul anyway. Good luck to him.

Isn't Surjan a HBF or BP?
Do we need any more of them?

That is total carp Jake does not want to leave Port & I doubt Freo even want him. With no disrespect to Jacob.

Correct. You dont need more :thumbsu:

Then again, freo's coffers are full of speedster, midfielders who win their own ball. I think this point was made rcently by Mark Duffield.

Smarty pants should have drafted him when he had the chance 4 years ago.....

Remember he went in the PSD, which mean every club (including Port) passed him up in the ND...

Just like Johnno. But we got Johnno and they took Surjan and I wouldn't change that for the world...

Besides this thread is about two Fremantle players, not some bloke from Port.

True. You're happy with your selections and we're happy with our so **** off and leave surj alone. Like Josh Carr you parasites are always hanging around to scavage someone esle's development & investment. That clear enough !

Then dont go after Pav!

I can't believe people are getting worked up over this. The media reported there was interest from a club in the players home state when he is negotiating a new contract. Looks like the manager has been hard at work pushing up his clients price and good on him.

I just pray Surjan stays at Port.

Once again very happy to see Drum and Ibbo sign on. Ibbo will be a better player for this club than both Headland and Peake.

all this beat up by player managers

surjan said about a month back in a newspaper article that he was *rapt at port & no plans to move

* note to our media person :D

Id love it if freo could poach surjan. stuff port! if we could get another speedy midfielder then go for it. the fact of the matter is, is that joshy carr said he was happy at port, then left, it happens all the time, you just never know what a player is thinking. everyone has friends of friends that know players and they have the inside knowledge, well untill the player signs i believe they are fair game. pav unfortunately included.
