My thoughts exactly - no cheap touches anymore...

But the ability to earn win more ball.

It comes down to who the opposition wants to shut down out of their three mids.

It's going to be interesting isn't it. I don't rate him that highly as a ball winner but that probably means (if I was an AFL coach) I would make sure I shut down Cotchin instead. He's certainly good enough to score well, and they'll always look to get the ball in his hands. I just don't know if they'll be able too often enough.

When he played midfield in 2011 he scored very well and didnt get tagged. Although he usually didnt start in the middle.

True, and he didn't have the guys around him that he will have next year.

He is a risk but one that could easily pay off too, and pay off handsomely.

As always, NAB will be interesting.

LOCK!!! Last 4 years avg- 97.5, 96, 89.4, 91.4 Overall- 93.56 avg
With more midfield time, he will average the same, if not more. The added bonus is we get a midfielder, as a back. Durable as hell, hasn't missed a game since '07. Not starting him, behind the 8-ball

The one attractive trait Lids has is his durability. He's been hovering around that 90-95 mark for 4 years but never misses games. Midfield time will mean more touches around the ball but less cheapies and possibly less TOG with a bigger work rate.

Will be interesting whether he rests fwd in his break time or not.

What are peoples thoughts on Josh Caddy, two games last season, should be fairly cheap and have reasonable JS.
Also Jarred Polec at Brissy, first round draft pick and only played 3 games last season.

It's a bit early to say, but my view is that Caddy will be too expensive for what you'll get. 2nd year players don't usually get a discount, so he'll likely be about 300k. That's too much for a player in his 2nd year who's in a new team and who might play mostly forward.

Agree, IIRC last years starting magical number was 4152~ and the salary is/has risen by 1.07 (7%)

Polec avg 62.3 x 4152 = ~260k x 1.07 = ~277k

Caddy avg 72 = 320k~

They wont get discounts

I was hoping that since Caddy had not played more than 2 games, his original price from last year would not go up. Damn. :D

Otherwise would definitely go with him. Might even still go with him given what he showed last year. Great young player who finds the ball very well. Him kicking goals doesn't hurt either!

Apologies if it's been discussed elsewhere already but how much discount is Hayes likely to receive?

Time to give the Mids some love I think!

Want to discuss Koby Stevens.. many already have him locked and loaded due to bargain basement price, few years in the system and fluff piece saying he's had a full preseason and likely to play more games in the middle.

However, if you look at the Eagles midfield, its not easy to break into..
C: Gaff, S.Selwood, Rosa
R: Cox, Priddis, Shuey.

Not to mention Kerr, Embley and even Masten all part of their midfield rotation and certain starters when fit. Also, there are other competition for spots that Stevens have to fight for.. Therefore if he was to get games, its only if there are injuries or sub-affected games.
From this I have my doubts about picking him up even as a cashcow as others (ie: GWS kids) should mature much quicker than Koby.

Another I have doubts on is Morabito, not having a full preseason and last I heard still not back to full training..? Although the freo fans I've talked to are confident hes a "definite best 22" so may be given plenty of opportunities to play full games.

These two sounds like perfect bench rookies on paper (cheap and experienced), but Im not so convinced. Feel free to discuss and shoot down my wild ramblings.. :p of course none of us are sure until we see them on the field, or any further insights from keen Eagles/Freo fans?

Ess don - agree with you on Morabito, from all reports he is a long way off being ready to go round 1. Realistically he will hopefully be ready to go by the middle of the year (hopefully), is comfortably in our best 21 when fit however. From a DT perspective would not be picking him in my round 1 team

I'd be taking Mitchell, Horsley or Shiel over Morabito. All cheaper. Will probably go all 3.

Yeh good write up Ess don.

Stevens had a very good WAFL season and as you said from reports tearing up the track and improving his fitness heaps form the preseason. However the eagles only have one spot to fill and that is Ebert from last year. Even than the eagles drafted in J.Hill who could cover the half forward role of Eberts, but most likely it would be Rosa going to a wing and Embley playing closer to goal. I think Stevens still fits around the number 23/24 spot with him and Swift holding those places down. However eagles also had a dream run with no injuries last year, there has to be concerns of guys like Waters, Nicoski, Kerr, Shuey, Masten, Swift with history and also some players getting old (Embley, Selwood, Cox, Glass ect).

T.Mitchell i have concerns over Artax, dont know anything about his PS, so maybe you know more? but had a very injury interrupted past few years, durability?, maybe going to struggle to break into the swans midfield, they have some old players that wont get moved on and some young ready made, proven talent in Rohan, Jetta, Bird, Jack, JK that will be asking for more and more time.

Also GWS dont have as many spots available as people think from looking at the best 21/22 thread. They have 14 players over 20 which are all good and should play (Reid maybe the only ??), they than have the most ready made talent in Coniglio. Thats 15 so 6 more spots for those who are gonna start and 5 for those that are not going to be involved in subs. They lack in defense so guys like Buntine, Mohr, Hombasch who are a little more ready to go should go alright. Cameron may add another tall forward target after a vgood year last year. Than you have guys like Shiel, Treloar considered some of the best preselected talent maybe just on the fringes.

I know i picked way too many GC rookies last year and got caught up in that a little too much. GWS are expected by many to struggle even more than GC did so it might not be easy to score points or get regular games for Shiel, Treloar ect. Have to really doubt how regularly guys like Darley, Bugg, Adams, D.Smith will play ect.

Mitchell will be a shot, they are losing patience with Jetta. Do expect Rohan to bust out this year though!

Hmm.. had T.Mitchell pencilled in, but wasnt aware of his injury-riddled past all I've heard was that he would have been a certain top 10 pick if not for F/S and was convinced.
Looking through the Swans best 22 lists, their midfield is quite settled as well and would be tough to get a string of games..

Guess there is no such thing as a lock until the first ball is bounced on NAB cup and should do more research on how the rookies are handling their preseasons!

Shiel is another of my midfield "locks" like many and Ill prob squeeze a Zorko in there for the M/F link, but again Im hearing whispers hes not having a full, flying preseason either? (Dont remember where I've heard/read that though..)

Also fair point about Eagles having an almost perfect run of injuries last year, but I dont want to have to rely on a senior player going down for my rook to get a game, who knows? The footy gods may give the Eagles another dream run?
