Gah, not sure how many mid premos to start with. When I usually play DT, I'll aim to have 6 premium mids by mid-season before upgrading forwards or defenders, as they form the backbone of a good score.

So, do I start with:
  • 3 + Barlow
  • 4
  • 4 + Barlow

I'm leaning towards 4 premiums, without Barlow. Not convinced he'll be in the top 10 mids by seasons end, and that's really what I want, 6 mids in the top 10 (top 6 ideally). Having 5 premiums means fielding too many other rookies, and there are lots of good mid rookies. But having 3 premiums means it takes longer to upgrade - 4 seems a good balance. Thoughts?

Good question and tough to answer.

4 premiums means easier upgrades later as the mids are the hardest to upgrade to but it also means 1 less cash cow mid to generate coin. I suspect your best option is to be guided by the Nab and the quality of rookies who present themselves as midfield options. If there are 5 "locks"" then your choice is a bit tougher but if there's only 4 you really like it becomes a bit easier.

You tend to find more price volatility in the fwds/backs so easier to get ur upgrades done at base price

All things being equal I'm a fan of 4, 3 certain top 6 premiums plus one underpriced premium with proven history (Barlow / Hayes type)

Agree. This decision is ultimately driven by where the "lock" rookies are. The difference this year is there appear to be a couple of more rookie options in the Rucks so there is some scope for loading your MIDs with 4 + (Hayes/Barlow) and starting with only 1 premo ruck. HMac also presents an interesting mid-price / value / upside pick as 2nd ruck which also enables a 4 + (Hayes/Barlow) starting MID line up. The issue there is NTH's Rd 11 bye but that's a discussion for the ruck thread

cooney? Has his knee got the better of him or will he bounce back?

He is training very well and was a standout in the intra club match. I believe they mentioned he is back to full fitness and will be participating in the NAB cup. I will be keeping a close eye on him as if he stays fit can easily average 100+ and at his price, its a steal.

Good to hear Cooney's going well.

Throughout his career he's never averaged more than 92, even in his brownlow year in top 4 teams and pre-knee injury.

Where do you see the uplift coming from to average 100+ post knee injury?

More so he has the capabilities to average 100+.

Although this year might be abit different for Cooney, IMO. Last year Griffen and Boyd dominated our mid, Griffen really lifted and was extremely damaging for the opposition. Surely maybe the opposition will put more focus than before on shutting down Griffen, which might be able to free up Cooney more. Boyd as well, surely will receive more attention than before. Maybe, Cooney might not receive as hard of a tag as he used to.

Also who knows how Macca will play Cooney, maybe he might start him out in the forward line as a lead up target, or as running half back.

I guess what i am saying is he has the ability to average 100+, and if he can stay fit, he might be able too.

maybe so but mid rookies>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>all

On that...

What price does a 100k rookie rise to after about say 10 games?

Edit: If a 100k rookie averages 70 what would his price be after 6, 8, 10 games?

A 70 avg. will get a rookie to about $300k-$320k and they usually take a good 8-10 games to get there, that is of course includung the first 3 games when they don't go up in price.

You wernt overly keen on Ablett so im not show if hes one of the 3

but....

Swan, Ablett/Murphy, Boyd, Barlow?

Im looking to go 4+Hayes/Barlow

He is at an awkward price at the moment. Not the sub $120k price but a bit more than a mature age sub $150k price. But Anthony Morabito could be a fantastic buy.

Missed all of last year with his knee, but his first season was outstanding. Only $168k and you KNOW he will get games and points.

Its hard to know how many rookies and premiums you should start with in the mids.

Do you go with the philosophy of "The midfield rookies make more coin than any other rookies thus having more means more money and making it quicker" OR "The midfield premiums scores seem more consistent and don't have price volatility/fluctuations of the forwards and backs, thus starting with more premiums means i have to upgrade to less of them".

Its interesting. Im not sure this year if i like that many rookies in the mids? I mean im happy with 3 but than finding a 4th looks hard. How good will JMAC be? i guess alot will be determined by the NAB. Will Miles be best 20?

^^^On Monty and Morabito.

Morabito seems to have dropped off most people radars after being the most hyped player for much of the off season. I'm guessing reports that he is not training fully yet and may not play NAB or even rd. 1 have scared alot of people off.

Monty is an interesting one. I had a close look at his numbers and it looks like he scores better with Hayes in the team. If he looks fit during the NAB I may rty and squeeze 3 premiums + Monty + Barlow into my mids.

Any love out there for Montagna? At 485k He is 60-70k cheaper then the premium mids and is only 1 year removed from being a top 5 midfielder.

New Coach????

He's been in and out of my team. Could be argued that his scores will return to what they used to be with Hayes back in the side relieving the pressure. I will probably end up going for someone with less doubts though.

Brad Ebert...will have more game time in the middle, will probably become an almost Priddis type tackling machine..is he worth it?

I wouldn't, but i can see the upside - playing in the middle more than he did at WCE will improve his scoring.

No chance of being a sub, so JS is far better at Port.

You'd imagine being at home might make him a bit happier and improve his game and is apparently training very well.

Brave man to do it, price isn't quite right for me and i just don't see him being a consistent player, but crazier things have happened.

Playing for a worse team that really lacks midfield support/depth. Awkwardly priced, wont reach premium/keeper status. He really needs to fix his kicking otherwise it wont matter what team your playing for, the players aint gonna want to give you the footy if you cant hit a target.
