trying to get the perfect mix for my rookie mids.

ive elected to pick swan, pendles, ablett and hayes as my big 4.
then was going to fill the rest + the bench with rookies.

who are just auto lock-in for rookie mid positions?

its heartbreaking watch a guy you think will dominate get dropped after round 1 and all of your opponents are quickly making cash off their success!

Wingard from port and McDonald from gws were my first lock in rookie mids.
Premium wise I'm thinking ablett and pendlebury. Not sure whether I should go another ultra premo/rookie or get 2 of Hayes/Barlow/cotchin and the more 350-450 guys.
Cotchin is primed for a big year and Hayes has always been consistent in the past. Last year excepted obviously.
Thoughts?

thanks!
since reading some articles about mcdonald and how he will be 'managed' through the year im not so sure about him, especially with the likes of Magner coming through in the NAB cup.
im looking deeply into wingard though, ive been stung with port mids in the past few years though.

i always play it safe with the mids,
better average and consistancy always seems to come out on top

Magner is the biggest lock of the season, next to Giles and Orren.

The beauty about Magner is that he is capable of playing 22 games and pump out a Barlow style 105-110 average IMHO. Anyone who starts with him will have an advantage over the rest, as you might save an upgrade trade, as a premo M6 may not be required.

Big call saying he is the next Barlow. Although his numbers show that to be the case.

IMO everyone will be starting with a rookie so that will be Magner. The other midfield rookies besides him dont look super impressive scoring wise. Clifton will be good. JMAC has queries over how many games he will play, when he does he should score farily well with 60-75s. Neale i dont think is best 20, he could well be a great sub.

There aren't too many base priced rookies that a very solid. All the good midfield rookies cost a little more this year. Clifton, Hogan, Wingard & Coniglio all look solid, but they do cost that little bit extra.

Stevens, Neale and all that have JS issues.

I think most of us want Magner to be the next Barlow. It would make filling our starting 22 with guns a lot quicker and easier if he can pull it off.

While I agree with you that Neale is not in the Dockers best 20, the one thing he has going for him is that the coach seems to like him and we all know how much Ross Lyon likes playing his favourites.

We also know how much he likes playing rookies. Fremantles depth is quite strong.

People wanting Magner to be the next Barlow and him realistically definitely being the next Barlow are two very different things. Personally id like all the players i pick from the start to be the next Dane Swan.

Looked decent on the weekend. Will have a slow start IMO averaging 70 but by 8-9 rounds with more match fitness he could easily hit 95+.

Did Rockliff spend a bit of time up fwd on the weekend? bit of a nothing game considering Carlton didn't score in the 2nd half so not look at the points he scored.

But does it look like he'll spend some time up fwd?? I'm not too sure that's good for his scoring, unless it means he'll be rested up there instead of benched, which would be great for his scoring!

I think he did in the first half, from memory he only had a handful of possessions with a few goals. He exploded in the 2nd half though, which means he must have moved back in the mids. Scored 51 in the 3rd and 37 in the 4th alone.

Yeah he's good like that - did that a bit last year.

Assuming Vossy was just mixing things up then, he is a decent fwd as well though, suppose that can only bode well for him if tagged, throw him up fwd.

theres almost a 100k split between masten and hayes.
i know hayes and done it before but he's getting older now, st kilda may nurse him through the season alot more.

masten, ive been stung with in the past but he is made for dream team,
when fit i can see him being best 22 each week,
his roof is what concerns me though.

even if he plays is he a genuine keeper or is there better odds hayes will get back to premium numbers?

Rockliff like any other mid in the comp will rotate forward. The good thing about Rockliff is he has shown he is very capable of kicking goals and has a good size about him. Inside word is he will play same role as last year but is expecting more attention.

Think Rocky will spend a bit more time resting forward this year. Lions will have a few more contributors through the middle. Rocky is a proven goal kicker. Finished last year stronger after being challenged to up his game. Was getting the stats, but not the hurt factor in the first half of last year. Lock and load for me.

I could be wrong here but I'm sure I read somewhere that Rocky only averaged around 75% TOG last year? Perhaps he will rest forward a bit more this year instead of resting on the bench?

Thinkin I might give ol' mate jobe a guernsey! tore it up first half '11 and I reckon he'll give it another crack in the big '12!!!

81-82% pretty standard for a mid last year

Edit: Im certainly considering Watson.

Yeah i think he was low 80's for TOG. Might see that go up a couple % if he rests forward. He is dangerous around goals, he knows where the sticks are and can snap a goal pretty easy. He has a pretty good tank, i don't think he will need as much benching as other players if he rests forward. Will be a few more young players coming in this year, so they might need the extra bench breaks. If we can do this and keep Rocky on teh ground up forward, it might be a win/win. Either way, i expect him to improve his avg this year by bout 5ppg over last year.
