Surely we wouldn't pass up Selwood if he was available. We have Bryan and DeLuca to support French. Why not go for the best young talent available??

I personally think this would be a mistake.....any thoughts?

Agree...can't see us passing up Selwood if he is available. He might not be, so we have to think about second best option. Also, couldn't we get McClaren second round in the PSD if we are willing to pay more than anyone else.

Can McClaren play backup to Barnarby any better than DeLuca and Bryan? If he is better than DeLuca and Bryan we should chase him as loosing Barnarby was a massive reason for some of those heavy losses this year. Personally don't think Bryan and DeLuca can play first ruck...but would keep both and delist Prendergast if we get McClaren.

Sorry, there was a thread for this yesterday, didn't see it.

Perhpas the powers that be expect Selwood to re-sign.

In which case, a bonifide back-up ruckman and another tall option would not be a bad punt.

ruck is one of the key area's we need to improve so we should carefully consider mclaren or any other ruckmen available

preferred option would be selwood- if available

as av76 mentioned- is mclaren going to offer more than deluca and bryan?

I believe that if Selwood is available what he can offer our side >>> anything McLaren could offer over and above Bryan and DeLuca

I dunno if its just me but IMO Deluca and Bryan are two of the worst tap ruckmen going around......Deluca predmoinantely plays in the forward line, thats where he played most of his footy and Bryan, although can pinch hit, isn't really a class ruckman.....we need ruckmen who give us better use of the football from the centre.

A midfield can only do so much, if the ruckman is getting hammered you can't do anything about it......as soon as French gets injured or even goes off during a game we start struggling badly......we need another ruckman and Mclaren is at an age where he is about to deliver and reach his prime.

Having said all that however, I would still pick Selwood first but I hope that if we get Mclaren, Selwood signs with Brisbane becasue I would hate to see him play for Collingwood....and even worse, see his brothers follow him there down the track....

No. 4, would love to have Wirrpunda back in Victoria and playing for us (there was a rumoured move last trade period too), but think he unfortunately will re-sign with Eagles.

Wirrpunda may be the go depending on what Lappin does.

As for McLaren, it is unusual. He has had alot more games than i expected at Brisbane but still isn't the best young ruckman going around. Deluca and Bryan have shown plenty in there first seasons, but considering what has happened to Deluca, does it mean the same for Bryan? Chris Bryan is 24 next year, Deluca 23, wheras McLaren is also 23 but has had better development. He has improved each year, Deluca had a year of injuries and time spent at VFL Level. McLaren played 17 games this season to take his tally to 46 games, and it is quite clear he may be leaving. McLaren is listed at only 196cm though, however, he still is a very good tap ruckman.

Carlton Ruckman 2005
French averaged a hitout ever 5.0 minutes he was on the ground in 2005 and 9.9 disposals per game.
Deluca averaged a hitout ever 25.8 minutes he was on the ground in 2005 and 7.5 disposals per game.
Bryan averaged a hitout ever 7.2 minutes he was on the ground in 2005 and 8.7 disposals per game.

Dylan McLaren 2005
McLaren averaged a hitout ever 5.6 minutes he was on the ground in 2005 and 7.6 disposals per game.

Using those stats, draw your own conclusion.

Nice analysis.. although Bryan for a first season at this level still stacks up pretty well. LF50, where do you get the stats for game time?

Deluca is a terrible ruckman. I would much rather he stays as a third tall in the forward line where he belongs. Bryan had a pretty good debut season however I think he would be suited to playing a floating CHB role. We definately need a new ruckman, the problem is we don't just need a new ruckman, we need a new everything.

Yes, Bryan looks useless in the ruck sometimes and Deluca is more of a tall forward than a ruckman. McLaren would be a good pick up and we should definitely go for him if Selwood re-signs with the Lions. If French gets injured for the season we would be in big trouble relying on Bryan and Deluca.
