Interested to know what you guys think about McLaren. Was he worth it? Will he be apart of the Carlton Footy Club's future? Should he be traded?

Won't be at the club in 2-3 years. He'll be of service till we draft a quality young ruck or someone like Aisake steps up and takes that role.

He's contracted for next year so I would definitely expect him to be there next year.

Unless things change he wont be around for too much longer, however he can be a servicable ruckman and teach the younger kids alot and also give them some good training.

I am not at all unhappy about us picking him up... we needed someone if French went down and to back him up. Also good to guide and train against the younger guys.

He's servicable when used in tandem with french. But he will never be considered a top afl footballer. We will probably get a few seasons out of him, and then it will be time to move forward, Sorry dylan, i feel bad for saying it.

Good club man/ attitude. Similar to McGrath, Prender, Teague.

Which is great to hear, and has its advantages.

Wished though we had picked another midfielder from the left overs of the National Draft - could have had Flint or Jackson on our list.

Flint or Jackson can be played at any time now or be put on the main list IF we want.

mclaren- was he worht it?

considering french has been injured for the majority of the 2004 and 2005
bryan has had problems with his attitude and application
a o'halpin and batson are just not upto playing afl yet (and being rookies)

when we picked up mclared we knew he was not going to be a world beater but he would provide a 50/50 contest and give 100%

its easy to say we sould have taken a kid, but we had (and still have) a gap in the ruck dept, we drafted to try and plug this gap, mclaren was the best option in the circumstances

these are the players picked up inthe PSD

Dylan McLaren- Carlton
Sam Iles- Collingwood
Brent Guerra- Hawthorn
Scott Camporeale- Essendon
Matthew White- Richmond
Ben Fixter- Brisbane Lions
Cameron Thurley- Kangaroos
Matt Thomas- Port Adelaide
Jason Porplyzia- Adelaide
Chris Heffernan- Essendon

we also had 1st pick in the rookie draft and we went for a midfielder so obviously our football dept didn't see thet there was a ruckmen available that was ready to play afl in 2006

:) Don't forget about Daniel Batson, 202/203 cm coming along very nicely in the Ant's Reserves. A nice project player, kicked a lazy 4 against the Bendigo Bombers on Sunday. I hope that Pagan keeps him on the list for next year. Remember that Dean Cox came off the Rookie list in 2002 and look where he is now.

A question, should we go after Gardner? I don't mean offer any trade for him other than say something in round 4 or. pick him up in the PSD. Would he be any value?

I certainly haven't forgotten about Batson. Has been developing nicely, is definitely worth keeping. As he is at the end of his 2 year rookie list chance, he needs to either be delisted or elevated at the end of the year. Personally, I would like to see hm elevated to the senior list. However, we have another option. As most clubs won't be interested in him, I think it would be safe t delist him, and then re-rookie him. He has shown signs, and as we all know, ruckmen and KPP take longer to develop than your average player. I reckon he may turn into a servicable ruckman, but an even better forward. Is very big, and definitely knows how to kick goals.

As for Gardiner, I would not go near him. Our club has publicly stated they have implemented a strict youth policy. He is 27/28, so would definitely not fit under any category in regards to this policy. Also, his off-field bust-ups are NOT what we want at the club. We have young guys coming through, and we most certainly do not want a dangerous guy like Gardiner interfering negatively with their development. Seems to have a big influence over Cousins, so if he comes there is also some chance of him having a similar impact on more senior players, for example Fevola-something we desparately do not need/want. He certainly has talent, but he has built up a 'bad-boy' reputation, something I would keenly keep away from our club. I would much rather continue the development of guys like Aisake and Batson, and look to draft a ruckman in the draft (eg. Leuenberger, Renouf, Jacobs to name a few). This would be a much better option IMO. So a BIG no-no when it comes to Gardiner.

I think what alot of us need to remember is that ruckman take a long time to develop. When French came to the club, I wasn't overly excited about getting him. He couldn't get a gig at Port, and only came to Carlton to get some game time. He's really blossomed at Carlton and has been very important to us.

I think McLaren could fall into the same category. His form this year hasn't been great, but I think he could still be very handy for us. He just needs a bit of confidence, time on the ground, and who knows what could happen.

Good to hear, don't get much of a chance to see Bullants games so wouldn't know.

Wouldn't go near GArdiner either, rather invest in another younger ruckman with the right attitude.

If Batson is any good, why after 2 yrs on the rookie list, is he still playing VFL reserves grade football? If he was any good, surely he would be playing regular games in the VFL seniors?

Good question. Anybody else have any further info...?

I think its just a case that the club really wants Batson to perform well in the 2's, then hopefully make a smoothe transition to the Bullants seniors.

I have a feeling he will be elevated or re-rookied, skilled ruckmen don't come around that often. Will be really interesting to see what the club does with Batman. I would really like the club to keep him.
