Eagles delist Houlihan, Spangher

Matt Spangher, who asked to be traded in the exchange period earlier this month, has also gone.

The 23-year-old, a tall defender, played eight games in 2010 including the last four, to finish on 26 games for the Eagles, after being taken with pick 34 in the 2005 draft.

Was rumoured that Carlton were interested during the draft period.

My question is, would he be worth a PSD pick (if applicable?) or even a ND pick? Could be worth a punt IMO.

I think he'll get a go somewhere. He's gotta improve a few areas of his game but I doubt he's reached his peak yet.

Could add some real class to your backline:thumbsu:
Reminds me of a Goodwin or Chad Cornes in their early days, and would be good to put pressure on guys like Russell, Austin and Armfield for their spot.

I'd be inclined to let him train with us throughout November/December.

If he impresses enough - we can either take him in the PSD or Rookie Draft.... or if we are that impressed... with our very last pick in the draft.

I'll leave it in the hands of the Football Dept.

He'd likely still be on our list if he hadn't asked to be traded 2 years in a row. Clearly wanted to go back east/home for the last 2 years.

Spangher isn't a defender who can crush magpies like the flying doormat.

I don't see the need for Spangher after we traded for Laidler.

Agree with C4, see if he wants to train with us. Get an idea about how much he wants it and if he impresses we can re asses.

Can we take him as a rookie?

I dont know anything about him, but I would remind posters that just because a player is delisted by a bottom side it does not mean he cannot play. And I would suggest he has been delisted because he does not want to play at the Eagles having asked to be traded (twice apparently).

I recall a player with a reputation for being a trouble maker we picked up in 93 after just 2 games with a team that finished second bottom (and bottom the year before that) and only got 2 games for us the next year and you would have been forgiven for thinking he was a dud. Brad Pearce went on to kick 50 goals in 23 games the next year to become the perfect foil as a medium leading forward for Sticks at FF and the Duke at CHF, and kicked a lazy four in the 95 grand final after many thought that he was trouble and couldnt play.

A lot is seen on the track that we dont see, a lot can change in a player if his head is not right where he is currently at, etc. Lets wait n see.

Thats because Shane O'Sullivan had extremely good oil (first hand knowledge) in fact of how good Brad Pearce was.

I dont think the same can be said in these circumstances about Spangher.

remember Bentley and Pfieffer

Laidler and Spangher would play different roles. I would have thought that Laidler would play on the medium and smaller forwards and focus alot on attacking on the rebound whilst Spangher would look to take the tall forwards. I'm not saying he is capable of that but surely at his size we would only take him to mould him into a KPD.

I've always said that we should look at most players, for the right price.

Our picks in the National Draft are 18, 33,41, 67 and 70 (or a PSD pick), as well as 3 later picks to be used to elevate White, Ellard and Garlett.

Obviously 18, 33 and 41 are way too early to consider taking Spangher with.

I'd rather use 70 (or a pick in the PSD) on a better delisted player or a young kid that has slipped through.

So, if we were to get Spangher, it would surely be as a rookie. In that case, I wouldn't be totally against it - but having said that, we do have a very good record in terms of recruiting kids through the rookie draft.

he struggled to break into the WCE team which has been average for quite sometime now...how good can he be?

Austin, White....would you put these two a head of him?

Wouldn't be surprised to see us pick him up - in my book, would only be making up the numbers though! Would prefer to see White down back and a big effort put in to getting Austin up before he misses his chance; would rather six young backmen with plenty of upside that can really start to develop together than a cobbled together backline made up of other's offcasts!

Personally I'd be more interested in picking up Houlihan in the PSD.

Think he is a pretty good player and if he could get over his injuries would add some more depth to our midfield:thumbsu:
