West Coast Eagles Priority Pick (2024)

"For the integrity and strength of the competition moving forward and with the draft being compromised from 2026/7 for the introduction and list set up for the Tasmania Devils the AFL has issued West Coast the following draft concessions (insert concessions)"

If they ask and get something good luck to them - you can only ask and they can only say no.

And they would find last year was a one-off. It's usually around 20-21, last year just had an unusually large crop of father-son and academy picks.

But it's a wonderful example of the big-club mentality that, as soon as something works against you, you demand the rules be changed.

it wouldn't happen if father son and academy all operated on the "pick 40 rule" that NGA have.

This.

A simple change like that would resolve a lot of the problems - the inherent problem in particular of a second round pick for the wooden spoon side - which hadn't been traded or modified in any way and through no fault of the club at all - being pick 30.

In an uncompromised draft, there is a substantial difference between pick 19 and pick 30. Yes I know there is no guarantee of the pick 19 being a star or pick 30 being a dud, but clubs have been known to negotiate for days in player trades over differences of less than that.

You are in a footy State mate.
Really?

Why are our talent pathways so bad?

Isn't Sydney the 'biggest' club in Australia, according to your president?

Also, your club has played in 4 grand finals in 12 years.

Swans are the last club that should be getting a leg up.

I'd say 2026 is even too soon. PP should be based on Teams success not current form. They have been in 7 grand finals and won 4 flags since inception. Not many teams can say they have had such success, if they can't sort their s**t out being the "biggest" club in the land then they can continue to rot at the bottom of the ladder.

Eagles supporters are quick to remind Freo fans how poorly their club is run and have spent many years struggling, now that West Coast have been a joke for 2 seasons some of their silver spoon fans are crying poor.

* West Coast

Pyke will do a good job. Players and staff not operating at the required level will be moved on. There seems to have been a greater commitment to training and diet in the off season

The AFL cannot afford to have West Coast struggling for a number of years. Broadcasters and sponsors will demand action. If there is not improvement this year and next, I expect eye watering levels of assistance to go their way. The fly in the ointment is if nmfc finish below them and continue to leak talent.

Golly. It would have been nice to get a pp when we were struggling but we make our own way.

Why didn’t you guys grab Buller in the last MSD? Instead you kept NicNat for another day or so when there was no way he would play footy. Thankfully for you folk Pyke will not put up with spoiled players.

Sydney haven't struggled since 1994, thanks to COLA and academies.

Since when have Sydney been struggling?

1993?

Why would we grab Buller when Maric's seen as the superior player and we only had one list spot?

Have not had COLA for yonks. Sydney is way more expensive than Melbourne. Hickey last year described paying well over a grand a week in rent for a nondescript 2 bedroom townhouse.

Academies grow the game. As it is nrl is nicking 16 and 17 year old kids with huge $ contracts which the northern Clubs cannot compete with.

You are right. Gifting 4 picks in the top 20 draft picks to the team who came second bottom and 1 pick in the top 30 to the team who came dead motherless last is exactly how the comp should be run. Not to mention getting less money than any other club from the AFL. Equalization for some, Yay.

I'm not a fan of priority picks and would prefer no one get them, but when you finish stone motherless last and your second pick in the draft is number 30, then yeah, you probably deserve something. Not as a handout but as compensation for a compromised system where previous priority picks, academy selections and father-son picks make the draft inequitable as a means to rebuild.

The future second and third rounders offered to North a couple of seasons back as a means to gain higher early draft picks this time round would suffice.

Academies, like father-son selections, are great in theory. But what happens is clubs work out how to game the system, so you get the Brisbane academy rescuing Luke Hodge's son from the clutches of rugby league and clubs trading out picks to pay peanuts for kids that would otherwise go in the first round.

I get it, everyone thinks their leg up is fair and anyone else's isn't, but the AFL is so far from fair it's incumbent on every team to seek what advantage they can when they are down or they will stay down.

Sorry, which club was gifted 4 top 20 picks? I know you can't be talking about North Melbourne.

The northern clubs are sick of hot housing talent for others unable to develop their own. Having some local talent who are more likely to stay is good for the game and the Clubs.

Subject is a lie/misinformation

Club said we don’t want extra picks. We want updates to the academy rules across the competition and an extra home game before we get to priority picks. Updating academy rules to same as Gold Coast would give us access to Malaki Champion for example who we could get on a discount

I wish we would ask for priority picks but we won’t

Stop whinging, it was one draft and you still got pick 1. You need to suck it up, for years you've been telling everyone how great your club is, now when it suits you, you're comparing your club to North Melbourne.

Not true in the sense that a bad Eagles side is 10s of millions in lost revenue for the AFL. They can’t afford to let us be a basket case.

Money talks in the end

Not yet. We had 42 000 fans, if at end of year we have 30 turning up will the AFL not be worried ?

No chance, some clubs would love 30k every home game. You will no doubt break the 100k membership again this year even after finishing last. You guys can wish all you like about getting a PP, but it wont happen.

Huh? That was the size of our crowd drop off last year. How can it be no chance ?

12000 x 65 bucks which is average ticket price is allot of money to lose

Your tickets are already sold in your membership which already take up nearly all the 60k seats, so it doesn't matter if you turn up or not, the club still earns the money. The only one it hurts is Venueslive who operate the venue.

Not that simple. I’ll find the article but last year was a good discussion on how much is lost by our crowd drop off. Club is directly funding the drop off. Venueslive do have minimum amounts guaranteed for example
