Draftee Stephen Hill has been a revelation for Fremantle this season

By Nathan Schmook 12:01 PM Fri 19 June, 2009
COACH Mark Harvey says Fremantle's decision to shed experience at the end of 2008 has been justified and the club has earned respect in the process.
Retirements at the end of last season stripped the club of experience and leadership but for the second straight year Fremantle ignored trade week, opting to draft 14 first-year players to the club.

Harvey said Fremantle's hardline approach to youth and the performances of his young brigade, led by Stephen Hill and Nick Suban, had earned respect.
"I think our effort and our competitiveness have been accepted in some way, shape or form," he told afl.com.au.
"And a lot of the decision-making at the end of last year has been justified with the changing of the list and the changing of the guard.
"I'd like to think that people respect the courage of all of those decisions, by the club particularly."
Harvey has overseen seven AFL debuts this season, six of those being first-year players. He forecast up to 10 by round 22.
It's an aggressive youth policy that he said would not have been possible without the support of the club's hierarchy.
"Your board, your football staff, your CEO, even our sponsorship and marketing, they've all got to be behind what you're doing," he said.
"And we're growing, we're growing as a football club more so than when we were inducted into the AFL in 1995. This is the first time the club's made a conscious decision since then to go this way (with youth)."
Harvey said developing youth was prominent on his resume as a coach, and he was beginning to stamp his style and beliefs on the group.
"That evolves with the playing group and the young players, their attitude and how they think about and approach football," he said.
"But what you want your group to be is obsessive and relentless in their approach to your game plan and winning."
As well as Hill and Suban, rookie-elevations Matt de Boer and Greg Broughton have flourished under Harvey and the coach was hopeful the club's next draft would round out his list.
It will leave the coach with a young and talented group and a full season to prove he has them going in the right direction.
"I'm contracted until the end of next year and my whole review basically will be based on how I'm developing this young team," he said.
"It doesn't necessarily revolve around win/loss, but you'd certainly need to be making sure the team is heading in the right direction.
"As funny as it sounds, with three wins and all that we've just gone through…the pride in me, my competitiveness as a coach and what I've tried to instil in the playing group, we want to win more regularly than we have been."

This is the best article on fremantle i have read in years, there is some fantastic points on how harvey is trying to mould a team in his image, and how the youth is where our future is at. i will admit is omteimes tend to lean towards the bleak, however this article has really lifted my spirits (obviously on top of watchin the young boys play), great read, i wonder if tony shaw read it :D

Love that pic of Hilly! :thumbsu:

He's freakin' awesome!!

There are many jokes on here about < 8% BF but that pic of Hill and his muscular arms makes me wonder what his body fat is!!

PS... Let it be known that I'm not 'turning' for Hill, I just admire his sexy arms... LOL

hill is a machine, will win multiple B&F's am so so so stoked we got him

Fantastic read and just makes me so much prouder to be part of this club. Love it. We are having a crappy year win/loss wise but it's probably the most exciting and positive I've been for some time. I really look forward to the weekends, if nothing more than to see our young group running around in the purple.

Love Hill
Love Harvey
Love Freo

I'm always one for a positive article.. strange that they seem to be coming more and more lately... We are still in WA right?
Anyways, however unlikely, I would imagine the respect counter to go through the roof if we pinched a win over the handbags..

The article was written by Nathan Schmook, who AFAIK works for FFC under Luke Morfesse. It's not as if it was written by Haggers or Wilson or some other journo hack from the Worst or the Slimes.

damn i didnt know that, ah well, im more interested in the contents of what harvey has been saying anyway, not so much about what the afl website thinks of us.

i just love the fact that harvey is openly playing the young guys, looking to recruit more great young talent, but his desire to win and gain respect is still burning, the players should feel that too. the west coast eagles media can say whatever they want, but we are definetly on the right track... i hope guys like gilmore, head and the rest of the DA brigade read this and realise that they wont be retained next year, make the grieving process for them easier when it is expected

It's amazing the difference that sweeping the broom through the playing list has made in the air around here! I too am loving watching our team at the moment.

I have very nearly turned for Hill :)

reading between the lines im still getting the feeling there will be another fairly big exit of players end of this year 6-10.
So that they can have another fairly big draft.
Then next year they are hoping to use the normal amount of draft picks and possibly look to trade to get players they need to push for the premiership.

Great to see.

Next year top 8 isnt a must but must be up around 9+ wins.
If they only end up with 5-6 Harvey will be under serious presure to keep his job imo.
Think he an the team hes putting together can do it though.

yeah i agree, i think we still have a lot of dead wood and harvey knows it, browne, head, gilmore, obrien, murphy, dodd, campbell, drum, connelly (rookie) and to a lesser extent peake and thornton would all be on edge, i think the last two have done enough though, but i would forsee atleast 6 of those guys going, grover will go onto the veterans list as well so that will probably be another 7 kids picked up in the draft, with midfielders and key forwards being the focus

i would think that next year we would want to win 7 games minimum, i cant see us winning any more than 5 this year, a slight improvement as well as some more development of the kids will be the key focus again
