The Port Adelaide Football Club gained its first player under the AFL’s father-son rule on Wednesday when it agreed to draft Brett Ebert, the son of club legend Russell.

Now which AFL/VFL club did Russell Ebert play for again?

Father son rules apply to SANFL and WAFL.

For example, if your old man played for West Perth in the WAFL, you are eligible to get drafted by Freo and WCE under the rule.

It was quite funny actually, Ben Cousins had the choice of going to three different clubs under the father sone rule because of this. His old man had accumulated enough games with Geelong, and in the WAFL, so he was eligible to choose Fremantle, West Coast or the Cats.

That'd be the Port Adelaide Football Club, Ewok. I'm sure you've heard of us; we beat Essendon in a final this year.

Welcome, Brett.

Can't recall any Port Adelaide Football Club running around playing Essendon 20 odd years ago when the older Ebert loins were productive

Heard stories of something by that name playing in an inferior league out west

Didn't Essendon only join the real competition in 1997?

There was a dud who played for North in 1979 with that name, I wonder if they are related?

Exactly and North should be the team that the younger Ebert should be playing (regardless of the current 100 game f/s rule) for under father/son not this bull**** SANFL/WAFL rule rubbish

Cousins should of been at Geelong or in the draft if he didn't want to be a Cat

WAFL teams whenever Cousins dad played has f-all to do with the Weagles, same case with Ebert

Another rort

SOMEBODY QUICK CHANGE THE RULES!!!

WE'VE GOT A VICTORIAN HERE WHO DOESN'T LIKE THEM!!

SOMEBODY QUICK, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD!!

Um, North Melbourne. That club that the Port fans have been having a love in with when discussing player trades. It's also the club that Port just can't seem to beat.

Oh, and back to '79...the dud was Graeme Cornes. Russell Ebert was very good with us - just a shame that he didn't come earlier and leave later.

Such hostility. I know it must be hard following a team on its way down the ladder to obscurity, but there's got to be a better way to deal with it than this.

I wasn't aware there was only a VFL father-son rule.

The reason that Port and Essendon didn't play 20 years ago is that neither were good enough, North Adelaide played Carlton in the '72 champions game.

Oh. I thought the name change to Kangaroos made them a different club. Wow, that changes the precedent set in this thread.

Uh oh.....I'm getting out of here before we get another one of those tedious and boring Port Adelaide Power/Magpies, VFL/AFL arguments. :o

Send my regards to PA1870 and Dan26 though.

And just in case anyone has forgotten North Adelaide won:D

Ebert: Saw the money, took it and ran. He may have been great in S.A., but he may as well not have turned up here, in Vic.

Says more about S.A. football than anything I've ever heard to call this bloke a significant player.

Now, if you want to mention Robran, that's a different matter.

Victorians are just ignorant. Russell Ebert was an out and out champion. There were many great SANFL players that didn't play VFL for the simple reason that those players had families, businesses, jobs etc in Adelaide that weren't worth leaving to play in the VFL. IF he had of played for quite a few seasons in the VFL he would have won a brownlow or 2, no problems. He was far better than anyone to come out of SA back then, only Blight was in the same class. Kernahan, Bradley, Platten, the Jarmans, name who you want, none of em were as good as Ebert. Want proof? Ask em.

... and Kevin Murray was a total hack... playing for a struggling club.

Why shouldn't Ebert play for Port. It was his father's club whether they played VFL, SANFL or a Tasmanian suburbam comp. That is what the F/S rule is all about.

Russel played too few games for North and that's all their is to it. As for whether he was any good, well he was a hack of first class proportion in the VFL. Maybe he was too old or maybe there was a huge gulf in standard. That is all subjective. In the SANFL he was a great. We are talking about his son and whether SANFL form is comparable or transportable is not relevant. FWIW I don't believe it is/was but so what.

If Russle Ebert, Robran or anyone wanted to be recognised on a wider scale they could ahve moved States and changed comps. They didn't so they remain SANFL legends who never proved themselves in the best comp. You caanot say they were no good for that reason though.

The Father - Son rule makes no sense

it compromises the draft

get rid of it

just like Brisabane and Sydney's draft concessions

Wonder if the Vic clubs would agre to that.

I doubt it.

Hypocrits.
