Another year of the draft ay and this one is exciting for folks out of QLD and NSW but still plenty to play out this year . In this thread ill give my thoughts on players from all over Australia and I’ll certainly be needing the help of noobermensch and his incredible videos notably for the interstate teams I can’t see personally.

Yep this years crop is what I started with when watching the 15s so keen to see how they improve. I’ll try and keep my Oakleigh bias out of my rankings though 😂

Sounds like that's easier said than done at Oakleigh...

Banfield was very close to my top 20 with Whan my current favourite of those you listed. Still a bit to play out during the year and they could all still feature in my rankings come the end of the year.

There's a few other i would have in front of Banfield at this stage
WCE's other NGA's are currently playing better
Koby Evans has made captain of Perth and was the most impressive WA player behind Cody Curtain in the WA
summer squad, been best on ground for perths two preseason games playing as centreman
Wes Walley will probably play the whole year in subi's senior side as a forward
Tyler Williams been in the best for swans
On Whan he just has a huge tank and a deadly left foot similar to Freo's Hayden Young he is one of my favourites
as he kills sides with his kicking now playing as a mid and grown to 185cm

I attended the double header at RSEA today and will give my thoughts on that game sometime this week, I’m going in for surgery on Tuesday so should have plenty of time this week to watch some footage of other games played this week 😂

Any word on how Jack Ison is travelling Ed? Some on our board mentioned he was injured, others have said he's focusing on school footy this year. Figured you might have a bit of knowledge.
Injured I think, that’s two times in a row I’ve gone to the game and forgot to ask 😂

My thoughts from the double header at RSEA

Sandringham vs Western Jets

I’ll start with the known quantities for Sandringham. Xavier Bamert didn’t get a lot of it but he was very physical/powerful and showcased great leadership. I feel he will play a Sam Powell-Pepper type role at the next level, he is a strong clearance player but not sure his kicking in the midfield is good enough to be a full time midfielder at the next level but he his leap and nose for goal would lend well as a forward. Myles Tyrer had a really good game in the ruck, he has good skills for a big guy and makes good decisions. Archie Ludowyke had a few shots on goal but only managed the one, I think he is a 3rd tall at the next level. He looked to get good separation and reacts quickly but I’m not sure he will ever be a real contested key forward.

Ricky Theodoropoulos was a real handful with great forward craft and a willingness to defend aswell. Loved his mark coming back with the flight showing he wasn’t just all flash. Rory Wright really stood out in the midfield with his toughness and kicking, he was struggling to hit small kicks in the warm up but his long kicks in the heavy wind once the game started where sublime. Kayne Watt was the standout key forward for the game, his first goal came from a lovely mark coming from the side and at 199cm he certainly has something to work with.

Fincher and Levine got a bit of it but didn’t really set the world on fire for me, Freddie Brayshaw the son of commentator James Brayshaw was surprisingly good on a wing. Small but used the ball well and competed well.

I wasn’t as thrilled with the Jets top agers. I’m not sure about Tom McGuane as a midfielder at the next level as I’m not sure he is big enough or quick enough, he was caught a few times and his ball use wasn’t to his usual high standards. Tom Burton really struggled with his kicking which got better late in the game when he started taking the short easy options, his work by hand and run was good but he does try to stat pad a bit and got in the way of his teammates a few times trying to get the ball back. I liked Oskar Ainsworth in the middle with his clean hands at stoppages and took some nice marks around the ground. Kobe Williams did some nice things in the middle but was patchy over the 4 quarters, Jacob Marron was very solid down back I’d like him to try and intercept more but looked promising as a key defender for this year.

It was the bottom agers for the Jets that suprised me. Zayne Weis was all class as a forward and defenders James McDaid and Hok Marial had some great moments. For Sandringham of course Arki Butler was a handful up forward.

Oakleigh vs Calder

Cooper Duff-Tytler was exceptional he is just so athletic and skillful. He had the better of Emmett although in terms of ruck work I think Emmett did better and Emmett also started to get into the game more late. A few 19 year olds impressed for Calder in midfielder/forward Cooper Herbert and key defender Gus Papal, Felix Kneipp started the game like a house on fire but didn’t really catch the eye as much as the game went on.

Essendon supporters would be excited with Adam Sweid and Hussien El Achkar with both amongst the best players for the game. Sweid was a class midfielder/forward with an impressive workrate and toughness to match his clean hands and decision making. El Achkar was certainly the most dangerous small forward kicking 4 highlighted with an impressive snap goal in the last quarter with the game on the line.

Oakleigh had a very even spread of contributors with the magnets being moved around a bit in the 2nd half. Midfielders Sam Allen, Aaron Sharkie, Sam Grlj and Hunter Holmes all competed well and showed some great signs. Archer Ryan and Kai Stewart both had some great moments on the wing and half back respectively and you also have bottom ager Archie Fogarty who is just a natural footballer and despite playing forward I feel could play anywhere.

Calder is going to be a fun watch this year. Geez El Kohdr (spelling?) is going to tease so much this year.
Had a couple of really impressive moments but poor finishing lt him down.

Liked the Calder captains who we haven't seen too much of, Bird and Barber. Barber just looks like an AFL prospect

Murray vs Gippsland

Murray really struggled to get the ball inside 50 which made it tough for Liam Hetherton to get a good run at it but he still managed to kick 3 goals and get 14 disposals having to pinch hit in the ruck aswell which he did well. Midfielders Onley and Corrigan didnt have much of an influence Onley had 28 touches but his kicking is still poor and doesnt really impact without the ball either. Corrigan has small flashes that are exciting but needs to impact stoppages more over 4 quarters.

Ryan Ash really does look and play like a smaller version of his brother with his run and drive by foot from the backline a real feature, lacks physical traits which might make it tougher for him to get drafted. Harry Wilson is a similar case as a nice runner from half back without much physicality but of course the standout for Murray was Carlton FS Harry Dean who was super dependable down back with some great intercept marks and composure to go with it with ball in hand. Very intrigued to see how Dean goes at National Championships as a big showing there could really have him firm in the first round of the draft.

Gippsland had plenty of strong contributors highlighted with Willem Duursma who started the game with a bang and sort of mellowed out as the game went on but he was certainly efficient and composed when in possession. Didnt think he had 30+ watching the game but was still a very good game. Midfielders Brodie Atkins and Zach O’Keefe where no thrills in the midfield both where just tough/hard working and didn’t waste their possessions either but i do expect both to play more forward at the national championships.

Mitchell Stevens was solid down back but thought he looked most influential when moved into the midfield in the last quarter with his agility and clean hands, the crows FS is hard to place but i do like his attributes. Luke Cheffers played his role to perfection as a high half forward who would put instant pressure at the contest and was clean using the ball buy hand but would like to see him kick more and try and also hit the scoreboard. Tom Matthew’s was his energetic self up forward and he has that touch of speed and class and of course botttom ager Will Malady was hard to stop close to goal with his strong leading and sticky hands overhead.

Other bottom agers to impress were the clean and composed midfielder Cody Templeton and small forward Marlon Neocleous who both look set for strong bottom age years. A fair few MSD prospects caught the eye for both sides though with Zac Harding bashing and crashing in the ruck and Coen Ainsworth who was fleet of foot at half back and looked exciting whenever he touched it. Ben Kennedy started forward and put on some great pressure and was a good link up there but was moved back to his normal spot behind the ball with the pressure the Murray backline faced and he still looked comfortable there with some nice marks and good ball use by foot. The best however was Gippsland’s Zac Walker who was an intercept marking machine, fairly lightly framed and at 191cm he is more a 3rd tall and he didn’t really get tested one on one but he will certainly be featured for the young guns once they play.

Dandenong vs Geelong

Yeah this game wasnt the best of spectacles with a lot of good solid players but no real star factor on show. For Dandenong i thought Hibbins-Hargreaves wasnt as effective as he can be and was suprised to see he had 18 touches, he uses the ball well but is currently rather outside and might need a run at half back or in the guts to change things up. Sam Lewis was a tough/no thrills midfielder who was solid as was Callum Smith. Jack Lawrence didnt win a lot of the ball but his pressure and tackling in the midfield was sensational and helped balance the midfield all round, also used the ball well when he had it. Jasper Russell offered good rebound and composure and bottom ager Gus Kennedy had great balance between attack and defence at half back.

For Geelong Lindsay was solid with some really nice kicking but still unsure of him as a midfielder without much effectiveness with clearances and physical intent, he will do well at half back at champs. Jett Alek was a real suprise packet for me the 201cm player spent time forward and Ruck and found the ball and moved well/used it well for a player his size, he is light and raw but has some real upside. The bottom ager Williams duo of Noah and Mason were both tough and energetic and key forward Oliver Johnston presented well despite the poor supply and heavy attention from Adrian Cole.

In terms of 19 year olds Henry Hayes was undeniable with his finishing for goal with 4 although i still question his physicality and defensive work and Charlie Orchard was composed and intercepted well in defence. Adrian Cole played his typical game

Hey eDPS, hope you are well.

What are your thoughts on Gilchrist as a player? I notice you had him as a mentionable.

Word is he was highly rated at U/16s level but maybe that was as a key position type?? Given he’s still around the mid 180s, what do think he ends up as?

Also, did you catch the Calder U/16s game today? Any word on Bewick and Rodan?

Much thanks in advance

He is a medium/small forward at the next level. Still find him hard to place should hopefully get a better idea on him at champs.

I couldn’t make it down today as the travel and length of games wasn’t going to work out post surgery. I will be hoping to head down on Friday though

I'd like your opinion on zane cochrane as a MSD potential

He's done a bad hammy unfortunately.
Saw him at vfl training last night on crutches. He was waiting for scans, but didn't look good, I'd suggest he'll be out for a couple months. Apparantely did it on the weekend during a local game.
