Watching Gold play their elimination final on Saturday arvo, and Essendon play the Pies at night, I began wondering about the future setup of the new VFL side and the links (if any) with the Gold.

Would like some input for those who have the superior knowledge about how the lists of EFC Reserves and Gold will be formed, and, ultimately, how this will impact the seniors in 2013.

Will the reserves be based out of Windy Hill? What is the coaching framework?

The list of players, of whom a majority train at WH?
The coaches, who are paid for out of the Essendon bank account?
Not much will change, from our perspective - the jumper will return, the song will return, there won't be a split squad any more, and they won't have to drive an extra hour and a half to play - that's pretty much it.

The annoying bit, is the VFL will charge us an extra couple of hundred thousand for the privilege - basically a tax for not supporting a basket case after ~8 years of propping it up.

I doubt we will even know who is playing for them before the first VFL games - wouldn't want to give the other clubs (or our supporters) that precious inside knowledge.

At least the players will be wearing their senior list number. That's something.

And I'll actually support this team. I don't barrack for Bendigo.

Same.

Went to the Sandy final on Saturday (they lost bugger). Never felt anything for Bendigo, always been a Sandy man. I'll support both this way.

How many VFL listed players do we need to top up the list and where do they play when they aren't needed n the team?? I have a feeling Shinners, Little and Thompson will definitely become Ess VFL players unless they are drafted..

You will find that the Melbourne based training group will stay with the Essendon reserves.c

Bendigo will surely struggle unless they can attract local sponsorship (unlikely in any volume) or be effectively underwritten by local government (more likely).

It happens when you just plonk a brand new “club” down out of nowhere and expect it to “work”.

North Ballarat were at least an existing club with some support.

I was aboard Bendigo. Firstly, it's a lovely town. Secondly, it was our affiliate team.

Definitely proud to have our own VFL team now. Whilst it is a positive step for AFL clubs, it certainly weakens the potential framework and support available to VFL affiliates. Flipping that, the true VFL sides may have now a level playing field. On the contrarty, however, now the former affiliate sides will be able to manage their own squads with full autonomy of selection, though, perhaps, a reduction of access to talent.

I think I will be heading down to support the VFL side in the future when the seniors are interstate. Good to have the option.
