hey guys, just wondering how it works with matty egan. so they delist him and if he can play again they will redraft him right? how does the draft process work? what if another team with a better pick tries and takes him?? also how does it work with the gold coast? does each club have to give gold coast some players? my mum says that each team had to give players to sydney and brisbane?? appreciate the replys

Welcome mate!!
Yeah every club is supposed to give GC one uncontracted player, this will most likely be a spud though ie: Lonnergan so nothing to worry about.
With Egan the idea is cleb will forego him leaving him to us out of sportsmanship along with the fact hes a risk due to age and previous injuries. So as long as he can come back, he'll play for us

(Waiting re: poll on Geelong board for sign off. Vote now!!!)

The plan seems to be delist him for the time being, and re-draft him when/if he's fit to play again. There's the possibility that another team will try to take him at a higher draft pick, but this is unlikely to occur IMO. Egan's not young, coming off a serious injury and wouldn't have played footy for well over two years at least. It would be a huge risk for other clubs to take.

The Gold Coast can draft two uncontracted players from each club. I don't think Gold Coast would look at him realistically though. GC is after 'franchise players' as they've been branded, i.e. the high profile superstars who catch the eye of the media. They want the media interest to be carried over to promote the team.

He'll be delisted but may play VFL later next year if his foot is okay.If he gets through that the club will redraft him at the end of next year.Yes another club could snatch him in next years draft if he's recovered, but it's highly unlikely other clubs would take the risk.

ah so this is why they were talking about a free agency program, so if the player wants to go to a particular club they can just sign instead of having to be re drafted and run the risk of another club picking that player up. if hes still playing VFL can't they like elevate him to the senior list or something??

he was on contract for next year, and if you are delisted the club pays ffor the year after

the club have paid out a some for this year (which is in the cap)
he is then to be paid as an assistant for next 3 years outside cap

win-win

more to this than we think

Gold Coast get first dibs on uncontracted players. Its like getting the first 30 picks in the pre-season draft, but they can do it at any time.

my mum says that each team had to give players to sydney and brisbane??
Sydney were already a team (South Melbourne) and received no favours in regards to raiding other teams when moved to Sydney
Brisbane - every team had to give two or three players to the Bears, from memory we gave them Stephen Reynoldson and Shane Hamilton. We were a lot more generous than other teams even though the two named were finished.
Freo - IIRC they could target ex-pat WA players, regardless of whether they were contracted or not. They took Stephen O'Reilly, who promptly turned from a gun (state rep) to a lump of poo on legs, in return we were given a priority pick on an underage player, Steven King. A typical Freo trade in other words.
Adelaide and Port - Don't recall the details, but they had some sort of access to SA players and we lost the president to the crows.

I think any club that decided to jump in and steal Matt in the draft would face a PR nightmare given how well the Cats have stood by him.

Ok thanks alot guys for clearing this up guys! I was just unsure of how things work. I really hope matty gets back he was a fantastic player and with harley reportedly leaving soon he could really plug the hole. I'm confident that he will get back and still be as good as he was in 07

nah, hamilton was part of the trade (included dave cameron) that helped snare the no.1 pick so we could draft steve hooper.

and i think hamilton had currency coz of his good 89 finals series.

no mention of the other underage player we received for andrew wills jumping ship??

It amazes me with all the technology in medicine these days how no one was able to fix him by now. It blows my mind
We can not hand fabricate tissue and whatever else is required to fix all these complicated injuries. My wife has broken her foot in the exact way that Egan has (nevacular) and she has not been able to run again like she used to. The biggest problem egan must face when running is the multiple changes of direction. Pity we cant play two dimensional as he would probably be alright to run in a straight line.

Yes I had that thought myself. That said if he got himself fit and firing he would certainly be a good pickup for a club looking for a CHB. You have to think they'd defer to the Cats though, even though that is a very sentimental view on the situation. Pretty risky for another club but if somehow he was fully healed and able to play on, I imagine there would be a fair bit of interest from other clubs.

Hmm I was thinking of Craig Evans - David O'keefe was the other 'star' to jump ship (or were they forced to walk the plank?)

True, but you'd think they would also be kissing goodbye any hopes of trading with the Cats in the future for the lack of respect shown.
