Found the mimic tear today and made my way towards the capital, the Draconic Tree Sentinel is making pretty light work of me though.

I’m starting to feel like I need to move onto something else soon though.

You should be able to summon an NPC from the path a bit back and another player to help with that boss.

Keep leveling up!
Try different Spirit Ash summons. I rotated between a few, started off with the three wolves, they failed.... did a few others, eventually went back to the three wolves and on the succesful attempt they provided me with enough of a distraction (in between my own dodging of the sentinel's attacks) to be able to get enough hits in to beat it.

Of course there's no harm in taking a break from Elden Ring and play something else for a bit (but you must go back to the game!).
I started the game weeks after release and weeks after people at my work had purchased it. Some finished it by the end of March. I was about 3 weeks behind someone else, I eventually leap frogged his progress and finished it wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy ahead of him. I had since completed it a further 3 times and he hadn't made much more progress (bar a few bosses).

Today he still hasn't finished it and he's moved on to Sniper Elite 5. While I leapfrogged his progress (this time starting from scratch on pc - I've actually done better in my solo run through on pc (eg: getting through Margit, Goddrick, Renalla etc) when I was lower leveled compared to my first run on the Xbox version.

Only problem was no ultra wide support on PC. I played an hour and had some fun, but put in for a refund and might get it on console down the track as I've already got a decent backlog.

Looking forward to playing it again though.

So....after seeing the odd stream - I thought stuff it. Getting it again on PC. I thought I would give up earlier and suspect I'll get to that stages still.

After a restarting as a Confessor, then restarted back as a Samurai and now about 20 hours in. Still think I'm a super bog average gamer, where any RPG or game with depth makes me feel like a nuffie, but switch classes and back forced me to gave me a few lightbulb moments, and realizing if you just have patience you can still do ok. Really has made my appreciate RPGs with depth now.

I think I'm doing really poor but still shocked how much I'm loving this though.

I've spent most of my time in Limgrave and Weeping Peninsula, beating about 3/4 field bosses, plus a few dungeon/tunnel bosses (which has been said aren't much trouble).

Level 29 (which I assume is way overlevelled?) but beat Margit on about the 6th try, am I doing ok? Or still in a world of pain? Only got my Utchigatana to +3, and still need to figure how to upgrade sprit ashes.

Again, really loving it and glad I've finally given it a proper go as some one who's a poor run and slash gamer with no patience.

Level 29 is fine, I was level 40 before I beat Margit on Xbox.... granted I was level 19 in my recent pc run-through (that's both with knowledge of when to dodge and dumb luck lol).

The game is a lot of trial and error, mixed with some skill (which comes with playing the game a bit).

You'll want to upgrade your weapon the deeper you go into the game. Spirit Ash upgrade materials are found in the catacomb areas and crypts. Have to be mindful (upgrade the right spirit ash) as they're hard to come by.

You can get something late game which then enables you to buy them from the roundtable area, but that's only really useful to prepare for the next runthrough (journey 2 etc).

Im up to level 84 now as an Astrologer and still have the Meteorite staff. Question- what level do you consider someone to be mid game or late game?

Also, what Ashes of War do Astrologers use? They all seem to be for melee..

Mid game about level 90-110. Late game between 140-160

Was stuck on the Fire Giant at the Mountaintops of the Giants for a solid week before I finally killed him with Bloodhound Claws +20 and Bloodhound Step. Did the same for Godskin Duo in Crumbling Farum Azula, no idea where to go now?
Theres a door to the north (I think) from Godskin Duo fight room that takes you further on through CFA, should be a few more bosses left there for you.

Guys I’m really trying with this one. I’ve sunk about 4 hours into it but I literally have no idea what I’m doing. Can’t cast magic. I hear about these summons and tears that I have no idea what they do or how to use them. I pick up items and have no idea what they do.

I have YouTube’d some videos of the game to try and help me but the lack of handholding is killing me.

I was the same, but I went with a standard sword and shield build to keep things simple.

I used a guide early on just to get an idea of where to go in particular the caves, catacombs etc. which taught me the combat mechanics and gave me runes to level up early.

My advice would be to use the IGN wiki/guide for Limgrave and clear out the caves and catacombs.

I've run through the game 7 times now (5 on Xbox, twice on pc) and I still get lost and need to check maps/videos online to double check the correct path of some areas :P

I went through the same issues having no clue where to go/best weapons to use etc etc. And my advice would be to find a youtube video of a walkthrough and play along with it (as you said - at least through the Limgrave area). I used a few different youtube videos to get my bearings - not only knowing where to go but ideal weapons to use. I did go in my own direction gradually, and also didn't just blindly copy people's stats layouts (molded them to suit my own Dark Souls-ish playstyle).

AFDogs this is exactly what I did mate. (Went Samurai so I could do range attacks as well)

I think I saw this video and it got me going for Limgrave and from there I've been all good.

I'm a complete scrub with two left fingers having never played any Souls games before with NFI......now about 40ish hours in and I've knocked over 4 main bosses. If I can progress in this game , anyone can :)

Keep at it mate!

I watched a few more YouTube clips last night that were really helpful. Have now learnt how to cast magic, summon, use ashes of war, use the horse properly etc. and I’m making huge progress in this game. 3 hours sunk into it today and enjoyed every bit of it. Killed quite a few bosses as well!

The bow still has me stumped.

Thanks all for the support and advice ❤️

You don't really need it

Shield and sword with some magic is working fine. Killed a few bosses just now. Tree Sentinel I used a talisman that added damage to my attack when I was on my horse and used the wolf summons it made the fight so much easier. Also took down Leonine Misbegotten after about 8 tries by using the wolf summons and spamming magic.

It's good figuring out ways to kill bosses on your own.

Also just lost 6,500 runes by jumping down in the roundtable place not realising there was a super tough boss fight down there. Spewing.

I lost a million runes falling off a cliff while dodging multiple enemies :p

I lost about 300,000 because I literally just forgot to pick them up again after I died. Then I died again 10 minutes later, went looking for them and was like...'oh...'

LOL

I've had many moments where I've sprinted back to my death spot... or I should say ATTEMPT to and get caught out being tempted to earn more along the way... only to get swiped at and die!!

Is there a path or area you use to farm runes?

I just found out about the one where you watch the ball fall off the cliff.

A very basic early early game one is just going around the Limgrave border for 5 minutes, get a few thousand runes while learning combat.

There's an area that you can access after doing Varre's quest (takes you to a location early "Mohg's Palace"... that you shouldn't get to until mid-late game).

That's a good genuine farming spot, it also has a 'cheat' farming spot in the same location. I forget the original amount of runes (its minimal) but with the gold scarab I got 5500 per kill in Journey 5 (NG+5).

The cheat way is taking the horse and climbing a rocky mountain, jumping off and keep swinging your weapon so the fall doesn't kill you, until every enemy in the area dies - that method is worth maybe 20,000 runes early.... but over 600,000 runes in my current run.

The ball falling off the cliff one may seem boring but its probably the safest for early game/lower level players.

There's an area near there where there's a lot of poison, but a good farming spot (can get a few thousand runes for killing the enemies... but they can one shot kill you very easily).

Found a sweet spot near grace where you go down hill and pick off about 12 enemies in 5 minutes, gets about 30,000 runes each time!

Swing (instead of going the L2/Found a sweet spot near grace where you go down hill and pick off about 12 enemies in 5 minutes, gets about 30,000 runes each time!

I lost 231,000 runes last night running north of Gatefront ruins,it wasn't the giant troll jumping off the edge, but a bit further up - just after the guy blows the horn. Again I can normally handle multiple enemies... but I started off with 1 weak swing instead of going my usual rivers of blood LT/L2 attack. And it went downhill from there :P. I did retrieve them after respawning...luckily.
