With recruiting becoming more precise each year, I'd rather have draft pick 18 than no pick or one at about 70.

Emerging rookie-listed midfielder Jesse Smith has been elevated to Carlton’s senior list this week after his impressive performances with the Northern Bullants.

Smith, will be named on Carlton’s extended interchange bench ahead of Sunday’s match against the Hawks at the MCG.


A young midfielder Smith was given his first full season of senior football at VFL level with the Northern Bullants last year and was retained in 2006 as a second year rookie.

Smith is a ball magnet who goes hard at the contest. His continued development has been on show with the Northern Bullants throughout the 2006 season after missing a large majority of the pre-season following a torn pectoral muscle in the team’s final weights session prior to last years Christmas break.

So we get a PP at pick 18... will that kid enable us to win more games next season??? perhaps no. Can you guarantee that the PP will be 100% up to playing a senior game at all, or consistantly?

We may get a good pickup at 18 but the chances of that kid playing a great year next year is not 100%.

We need a good year next year for memberships and sponsorships. To do that we have to look at the now and the things that are holding us back.

I think we most can agree one of the things that held us back was that self-belief that we could win. We instill that belief in these final 4 games, it will cause that domino effect and things will flow better from that than 1 PP.

I have been waiting for about two years and finally i will be able to see him in the navy blue. I have been a big fan of his ever since he was at the Calder Cannons. I have no doubt he could make a difference. He will add more depth to our midfield.

If we win 4.5 games that player could potentially stay on the list because he's better than pick no 70-90. The recruiters now have a lot more information available than when they picked up players late and have improved their strike rate. For every Grant, Hird or Fisher you draft late, I think you're more likely to draft a C.Croad, Norman, Joe Allen or Richard Kelly.

You'll rarely see a Livingston being drafted in the top four anymore.

Austin Lucy was drafted at 70 last year despite being another lightning quick KPP.

That would explain why in 2005 when we had won 10 games including the last 2 + the Wiz cup we had 33,000 members, while this year with 4.5 wins + Murphy, Kennedy etc we have 28,000.

You think if we lose every remaining game and end up with just the 3.5 wins we'll get more members? Drafting Murphy, Kennedy etc didn't get 5000 people to sign up this year. Why will next year be different? It will be picks 1/2 and 17/18, not 1 & 4. Aker would get more members to sign up than an unknown kid who is not guaranteed of lasting 3 years anyway.
