His size – or lack thereof – will raise some questions in terms of his viability

http://www.thecollingwoodblog.com/blog/?p=690

I thought it Raised a Good Question as he seems to have a Ton of Talent but is his Body able to take AFL/Senior Footy?

We say with Dick he was a Huge Talent but Body ruined his Chances of being a AFL Star.

Do you think this could be a Problem?

Highlights of Edwards a few years ago:

Of course anyone of his size has question marks especially when they are two years away from even being drafted.

I've watched that clip several times over the last yr or so & that change of direction at the 20 odd sec mark gets me every time. Bewdifull!:D

and thats always been the beauty of our game - the ability for anyone, any size, shape, skill or lack of, if they can bring something unique to the table, and naturally avoid physical harm if on the small side.

not wanting to bring the 'dark side' of liberatore into the discussion, but for someone slow, short, but immense physical strength for his size, he used his strengths to become effective, and won a brownlow & other awards as a result.

as more players become six footers, there could well be a place for someone who simply runs underneath everyone else. someone unique.

Edwards and Dick are different.

Edwards is short. Dick thin and unfortunately has had injury difficulties. No such injury concerns are present with Edwards.

Hopefully Edwards has more growth in him, last measurements I have of him he was below 170cm.

I agree it's one of the things that makes me love the game so much, size doesn't matter, it's what you can do with it.

Would love to see the vertically challenged make a comeback in our great game.

Edwards marks similar to Jurrah from that video in the sense he seems to have long arms (especially for his height). He seems to pluck them, and unlike Dick seems to be ok in contested situations. His speed is unparallelled even though Dick was pretty quick.

All in all, I have much more faith in Edwards than Dick.

I've been saying this jokingly since Blair started, but we should sit him 30m in front of goal to get high tackles ^^. Could kick 100 goals a season I reckon :D:thumbsu:

Just looking at him although he is shorter than Dick he certainly looks thicker set to me than Dicky ever was,he will put muscle on more easily that was Dick,s downfall he never got any bigger.

It would be great to see Edwards grow a few inches but really looking at that footage of him it,s hard to see anyone being able to catch him at least I hope not the thought of what damage could happen to a little fella like him does not bear thinking about.

He has another 2 yrs before he can come on our list and he could grow a bit but the talent is the thing and he looks like he could be another Omeara, has talent to burn just hope no one can catch him just yet,but a bigger talent you will be hard pressed to find no doubt about that.

What I do look forward to is 3 or 4 yrs down when hopefully he is ready to go the other clubs and fans will be spewing at the thought we got him for nothing under the NSW scholarship scheme that will be priceless especially if Witts comes on as well.:thumbsu::D

Brad Dick also had a superior kick, which from the sounds of it Edwards doesn't match. Going off what I've read and the vision I've seen, the only thing that's similar is that they're both undersized, quick and have a similar appearance. Their playing style doesn't seem to be the same.

Had the pleasure of watching him last year in the firsts for Scotch and he would just run around the big boys, I think he is a lot quicker than Dick and has more scope for time in the midfield, just needs to build on his frame. Plenty of time to do so though.

Are you at Scotch yourself? If so do you know what he will be doing this year? Will he play for an outside team or Scotch? And is he any taller? That;s what we all want to know!!

Cheers

Pace to burn, ball control, play reader, can turn on a sixpence.....his disposal will only get better..........cant wait.........will be a winner......good move to get him into the Melbourne lifestyle at a young age. :thumbsu:

Where is he from and at what age did we take him from his home turf?

According to Malthouse in the paper today(or yesterday), he says that Dick could be the difference of WCE making and/or winning the GF IF they can get his body fit.
Is the West Coast medical department better than the Pies or do the have a miracle drug that can help the bloke get back on the paddock quicker?
There is no doubt he has talent but to say that ...............
I wonder what his thoughts were of Dick when he couldn't get on the park for the Pies were?
Would he still have held him in such high standards if he was playing for the Pies or is because the Eagles lack a genuine crumbing forward?

Edwards is one of the NSW scholarship players and he was playing for Batemans Bay when he was spotted. We signed him when he was 14:

As for Brad Dick, Malthouse was a big fan of him, which is why he often made it into the team off limited runs in the VFL. After his last shoulder reco it was more of a mental problem he had afterwards than a physical one. He then did his knee which is either incredibly bad luck or he just has loose/weak joints. He's had both knees done and his shoulder (maybe both).

He's a great player when up and about, but considering how many injuries he's had and his mental state I think it'll be hard for him to have a good career, let alone string a season together.

I also don't think having different medical staff would help him. We have some pretty decent guys at Collingwood and Dick's injuries were due to his body, not the workloads he was under. The first step for him is to win the mental battle and have confidence in his body.

He was born in W.A (Kalgoorlie) & shifted to Batemans Bay when he was 9, then moved to Melbourne last year age 15, hence he will spend a total of 3 years in Melbourne prior to the 2013 draft, so should be very settled by then.
Mick will send a few barbs Collingwoods way this year thru his media position.

Brad Dick may get a shot now Mark LeCras has done his knee and will miss the year.

It's still relative early days for Elijah. He has 2 years in a reported, pretty good system at Scotchs. He should get a few sessions with us also, to gauge his progress.
