It appears that we worked on nothing over preseason.

In the final against the giants yes we got bullied but they also structured up to stop or ball movement from the defensive end and out midfield ascendency. Exactly what Collingwood did last night.

We couldn’t move the ball from defence to attack, constantly switched for no reward or bombed the ball to their interceptors. This one is on the coach a lot especially with selection, we have Jj Williams crozier suckling and Daniel all capable of good ball use and run from defence. Instead we select 3 kpp in keath cordy and Gardner along with wood. That gives us no drive at all. On top of that we have cordy taking kick outs. This selection is also against one of the smallest forward lines in the league.

The midfield we seem to have put all our eggs in one basket, the hope that English would develop enough to give better use, he obviously dominated Lycett in the game against port but he’s not ready to compete against the likes of Grundy especially one out. Our midfield structure was also atrocious, we didn’t have a sweeper at most centre bounces which meant there was no one in their way going forward. Most of our mids moved forward before we had the ball. Also with team selection we had the options of Wallis and smith to rotate through the centre outside the starting 3.

Another thing I harp on about every year is our strength and conditioning department, our players constantly get brushed aside when trying to tackle and get too easily pushed aside and our bodied in marking contests.

Finally none of that excuses the effort which was non existent last night but selection and coaching was a massive problem and we wasted half a season due to it last year and in previous years and it looks like going that way again.

I’ll just list some of my negatives as I need to vent.

- Gardner selection was simply a joke. He literally does not do one thing at AFL standard. I feel bad for him because he just shouldn’t be put in that position.
- Why on earth is Cordy kicking out? That is downright arrogant from Bev.
- English was manhandled like a baby. It wasn’t just Grundy, he had players 20kg lighter than him slip his tackles like he was nothing.
- No idea what was happening with Bont, Macrae & Dunks. We usually get smashed in the ruck so that’s not an excuse. Bont in particular was awful last night, didn’t show a whole lot of leadership. Terrible performance all round.
- I just don’t think Lewis Young is up to it. No aggression and has poor skills. If we were serious about winning then Trengove would be playing. Gives us a lot more flexibility and stability in the ruck and defence.
- Stop with this rubbish Suckling forward. I like him but play him in defence, he’s been quite good over the last few years.
- Naughton clearly not match fit but would’ve been bloody hard to get a kick in the forward line tonight.

As far as team changes go, we’re lucky we have a few that could come in and make an impact. We need to inject more pace and skills into a slow and pedestrian outfit.

Out: Gardner, Young, Cavarra, Dale
In: Trengove, Lipinski, Richards, McLean

I feel that will address some weakness and eliminate the players who aren’t AFL standard.

The club needs to give JJ some "harden the F*** up pills" as clubs have worked out that he's scared of his own shadow and doesn't provide anything in the backline unless there's no one around, maybe time to put him on the wing and let him start near the boundary line where he has 100m of free space around him and he can play the link player.

Here's a relatively newbie-to-the-game question; how are Rucks developed? Are they drafted as Rucks and specifically trained or are tall forwards or defenders moved there and if they're good, they stay.

Certainly there has to be an option on the ground other than English who would be more effective at the position, right?
Welcome American Doggie :)
Rucks are usually developed for that position from an early age on the basis of their height.
English was the only one in the team selected who regularly plays ruck. Their were a few others tried there - Young, Bruce and maybe one other - who don't normally play there but they didn't do any better. The Collingwood ruckman, Grundy, is the best ruckman in the league. English is very young and big guys take longer to come good as the saying goes. Last year he did fairly well against just about everyone apart from Grundy so hopefully that will be the case again this year. We have high hopes for him!
We have basically only two other options on the list, Trengrove and Sweet. Trengrove is not a specialist ruck and not as skilled as English but is stronger and may have coped with Grundy better but was out of favour at the end of last season. Sweet is stronger too but a little further back in experience and skill than English.

pathetic effort. especially the mids. lazy, too slow. its concerning non of our mids (maybe smith) have the ability to break tackles also. watch richmond play they have the ability to always get the ball moving, their players are strong.
cant fault the attackers or defenders much. i knew we were at least 1 tall too many, if not 2. selections are embarrassing yet again.

it seems bevo cant this team playing well when there are high expectations from the media and fans. players also are guilty of this when they are pumped up from the media. next weeks game super important.

Thanks mate - I was mostly a lurker last year but I'm trying to be more active in the conversation this year, even as a relatively newbie.

Yeah, I hate playing Collingwood - Grundy always dominates English. He plays well in stretches but doesn't matchup well with the big boys yet. Hoping he grows fast into a reliable ruck.

Young, Schachie, English need those pills too. Pretty sure I’ve forgotten a few others that should be on that list.
We have so many players that are scared of their own shadows. I blame bev for not toughening them up.

We have been figured out put some work into Bont and the rest just falls apart without a strong input from Bont

I reckon our coach, captain, ex captain and president are all very socially aware. Is it possible they all feel we shouldn’t even be playing and that mood has permeated the group? That’s my take away.

Is there anything worse than a shit round 1 performance? Welcome to our world.

The Bulldogs looked off, in system and effort apart from a handful of players including Keath, Daniel, B, Smith and B Williams while Macrae and Hunter tried but were ineffectual.

It's hard to know what to take out of that game considering the circumstance we are playing under however it's still a bitter pill to swallow after 5 months of preseason and be touted as a premiership favourite to then see your team dish that up. Too talented a list for that to be the norm though.

We’re taught not to make excuses but I believe that from a mental standpoint, our boys ran out into an empty stadium, under a whole bunch of confusing rules and constraints, and unfortunately couldn’t get their heads into a place where they were competitive. Collingwood on the other hand did get their heads where they needed to be, and as we know, if you’re down a few percent in any area of the game, you’ll get hosed by most teams. From a selection perspective, a few baffling decisions.

Our match committee either aren't intellectually up to it or they simply don't take these sorts of games seriously enough. Some changes are definitely needed in the coaching team but regrettably are unlikely to come.

We made the same stupid selection errors that we have been making for the last three years, and most notably in last year's elimination final.

We simply had too many underdone and inexperienced players in the side. This left way too much to too few. It was like playing 17 (or even less) vs 18 for the whole match, and was all so sadly predictable.

Naughton, English, Bruce and probably a few others have had interrupted preseasons and clearly weren't ripe for this game.
Throw in an AFL debutant in Cavarra, a couple of very inexperienced fringe players in Young and Gardner, two mature AFL recruits playing their first game for the club, remember that we are a generally young side anyway, and it all adds up to a very unsettled line up going into a tough match against a strong opponent in very strange circumstances.

Apart from the obvious selection mistakes, I was also really disappointed in the way English was mentally beaten by Grundy before the first bounce, both he and whoever our ruck coach is need to spend a long week reflecting on an abysmal performance. If Bev wanted someone to debut in this game, it should have been Sweet.

I was also disappointed at how few players stood up to be counted when things were going wrong. A small number of players stood up although it was nice to see Keath and Bailey Williams in that group. It was also good to see Wood start the game so strongly before being overwhelmed by superior numbers.

Credit to Collingwood they set up well and played smart football. A great shame they were also helped so much by the terribly biased umpiring that they were still infuriating to watch. They wouldn't have gotten away with it so easy in front of a home Bulldog crowd.

Gardner had no business being selected for tonight's game and he played like he knew it.
Young is slowly improving but still a bit behind other key position players and needs to show more confidence and resolve when he gets his chances at senior level.
Cavarra certainly didn't embarrass himself but didn't necessarily do enough to put him ahead of other similar players either. It is hard to judge debutants in bad losses but I was hoping to see a bit more pace in him.

Sweet, Mclean, Richards, Dickson and Schache should all come into consideration for selection next week.

I expect that Naughton will be much bettor for the run, and hopefully our other high profile players will approach our next match with a better attitude whenever it occurs.
An excellent analysis of the game Proff. Sadly, every word is true.

My changes from last night for next week.

Out:
Gardner: looks like a nice bloke but he literally lost every contest. Some of his 1 on 1 work in defense was absolutely deplorable. I dont even think he is VFL standard.

In:
Mclean Or Richards.

Move Young to his best position as a B and get some more pace or pressure with Toby or Ed. I dont know how you can think about judging or grading any of our forwards from last night we had 0 ball moving forward. This game was solely on our mids and I think Bont, Dunks and Macrae have earnt a few credits in the bank to keep them in the team.

Really impressed by Wallis last night and Bailey Smith is a star. Has pace and strength he will be our 2nd best player very quickly

Anytime we play Grundy, Gawn, Goldstein, Naitanui etc. TRENGOVE MUST PLAY!

Give English a hand FFS!

We played 3, below average talls last night. Gardner, Cordy and young. We still got chopped in the air.

Some of the dumbest selection shit we’ve seen from the drink in a long long time.

No balance to our team once again. Too big where we needed speed. Too small where we needed size.

Just indefensible sadly.

If that's the case tell us so we can stop wasting our time and energy.

Had some time to digest this performance. I guess in one way with what is going on around the world it is no big deal. However, if we got beat by a few goals and put in an effort no problem, but to have 2 inside 50's for a nearly 2 quarters of no effort stinks. Then to follow this up with no goals in last quarter. This is disrespectful to us supporters who have paid our membership and are prepared to donate it to the club. I have no problem with the donation with one proviso we get effort going forward.

PS Should English play against Grundy he must have nightmares and it is no good for his confidence.

Yes. Said this last night. There was certainly a mood about us last night. Flat as I’ve seen them. But not trying to find excuses for us also...

I found it interesting that when Matthew Kreuzer got injured Carlton improved if we are going
with that ring a ring a rosie crap then Naughton has to play back, 22 inside 50's for the game
is rubbish. Lachie Young simply has to play !

B: Wood , Naughton , Williams
HB: La. Young , Keath , Crozier

Johannisen as the defensive wing, Caleb Daniel on the moon where his kicks will go forever.

We just looked completely unprepared last night: mentally and physically.

In addition to the Marsh games, Collingwood played extra practice games against geelong and Melbourne I think. This says to me that they set themselves for round one. They probably better understood how important wins are going to be this season

The pies were focussed and battle ready, whilst we looked like unprepared kids, who went out and got spooked at the first contest, and never recovered.

This happened with Melbourne last year. They just expected to roll from 2018 into 2019 - and got smashed as a result.
