I was just reading this article that was posted on the AFL board that says how the Geelong team we know today was pretty much made in just two big drafts(2001 and 1999).

http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/a...-at-super-drafts/story-e6frf9jf-1225811885996

I couldn't help but compare this to the Fremantle draftees of the past 2/3 years. Particuarly the 2008 superdraft.

I feel the likes of Hill, Palmer, Morabito, Suban, Ibbotson, DeBoer and many other potentials could match the drafts of Ablett, Bartel, Corey and Ling.

Geelong also recruited star forwards such as Johnson and Chapman. We could surely get at least a premium or 2 out of Mayne, Ballantyne, Ruffles and Walters. I've excluded Fyfe because I am very confident he is the next Stevie J.

And hopefully with backline players such as Silvagni, Broughton, Pearce, Roberton and sometimes Hil/Suban/Mora we could have a backline as good as Geelongs.

The many other young guns didn't get mentioned as they didn't realy fit in to this comparison with Geelong's drafting.

Are they similar players?....i didnt think they were.

We definitely had a great 2008 draft...well so far so good. In 2007, we snared Rhys, which i was always hoping we would....and scored Mayne who is shaping up to be an absolute bargain.

It will be interesting to see what type of player we will target in the early round of next years draft.

I mainly just have his highlights to go by but Fyfe definitely knows where those goals are. He can pull off some impressive goals like Stevie J. Can also play up the ground like him.

all reports similar to this year, as GC have already taken a portion of the best, and on top of that get odd picks from 1 to 9...... quality will drop away quickly after pick 5, however good players will last till around your pick 25 mark. the premier is going to be extremely lucky if they manage to get an A grader by the time they come into the draft

Pretty hard to tell until the u18 champs...but it

Should be better than the 2009 draft. This is how the first round will pan out for 2010 competitors.
GC get 1,2,3,5,7,9,11,13,& 15
Wooden spooners get pick 4.
15th gets pick 6.
14th gets pick 8.
13th gets pick 10
12th gets pick 12
11th gets pick 14
10th gets pick 16
9th gets pick 17
8th gets pick 18
7th gets pick 19
6th gets pick 20
5th gets pick 21
4th gets pick 22
3rd gets pick 23
2nd gets pick 24
1st gets pick 25

I wouldnt mind being able to grab this dude at some stage during the draft. Hopefully GC wont snare him first. Ignore the title..its not Hayden Jolly...its Sam Day.

Sam Day – Sam played as a key defender and forward. He was exciting, although he only got 11 disposals. He took three fantastic contested marks and kicked two goals when he went forward in the second half. Sam is athletic, has strong hands and really competes. He has played high-level basketball and is also an outstanding baseballer. Sam is already 196cm, despite being a bottom-ager.
Draft eligibility: 2010 NAB AFL Draft

Another one is Blayne Wilson. Either way, if our current recruits keep on impressing, we are narrowing down what we really need.

Matt Rendell reckons SA will produce more quality next draft

by what ya hear . gc17 have stated to be anti trading off picks to other clubs.is that a clue that the 2010 nd is fairly talented?

is that right, i thought i read somewhere that kevin sheehan thought the quality was low in next years draft. i might be confused. either way, there are some rough diamonds out there, and brad lloyd is getting a pretty good rep for spotting talent. we'll be ok

Considering the age restrictions on the 2009 draft, i would assume ( dangerous, as it can make an ass out of u and me), by weight of numbers, that it would be. And the rumour also says so....check out some threads in the draft and trading board..it may have some better info for u.

Some posters, like Chris25, Lach, and a few others, watch the U18's champs and will be able to guage the talent that comes through.

I just watch the Sharks play. I might get down a fair bit earlier this year and have a squizz at the colts.

I dont think Bluey would be the CC/Schwab type. Unless he has a uninspiring u18s champs/WAFL season or a few others impress more...then Darling is GC bound.

correct me if im wrong, but i think vlad as pretty much said that GC wont have to get rid of any of their first 5 picks.

Does that mean that they are not allowed to trade them?

my understanding was that with uncontracted players, GC can take them and the AFL will determine compensation, the AFL have said that GC will definetly retain their first 5 picks, so for instance ablett is out of contract, if he decides to go, then geelong will not get any of the first 5 picks for him as compensation

for contracted players, say they wanted sandi (not that we'd ever give him up) but then negotiations would have to take place. i have a feeling though that the first pick is considered a priority pick, and that pick can not be tradedm as for the others im not sure.

thats to my understanding

as it stands if pavlich wants to leave at the end of next year to gold coast, we will not get anything better than pick 9 for him :thumbsd:

it surely does, and it isnt going to get any easier with GWS coming in. be thankful we started our rebuild a few years ago, its gonna be tough for the next 5 years
freo have cut it fine on loading up on new talent.at a guess i reckon we've left it a year to late.i hope i'm horribly wrong.

yeah look you might be right, although we have managed to pick up mayne later in the draft, broughton with what was effectively pick 172, and another group of rookies with a lot of promise, so hopefully that has us in good stead, i dont think any of us could have predicted how well our rookies were going to go. we may just have to hope that brad lloyd finds some more rough diamonds later in the draft

West Coast are better placed than us. 2006 and 2008 were both strong drafts, and they got some good KPPs in 06 and excellent mids in 08. We did the same in 08, but not 06.

There recruiting is probably a year ahead of ours and their young KPP players are better. But our midfield, small forwards and small defenders are five times better than West Coast's. Geelong only ever had one good KPP, Matthew Scarlett.
We've still got Matthew Pavlich for at least 5 years and you never know, Silvagni could be a great full back.
And the drafts of 07 and 09 are just as good as 06 IMO. and 08 will be way ahead of all of them three.
