I dont agree that making a team follow on is always the best option - it shouldn't be an automatic decision that a captain should make. Sometimes I think they do it because it is the expected thing to do and perhaps they think that it maybe adds to the psychological advantage they have over the opposition.
One reason for enforcing it could be if the weather is likely to prevent the game from completing it's course.
Two main reasons for thinking twice about it, are...
1. The bowlers get tired - especially if the team makes a big score - a la India - Laxman/Dravid -even in the 4th tst in Melbourne you could see that happening - it is also tiring for all the fieldsmen and if they have to bat early it can be hard on them as well
2. It means you have to bat last and possibly face a
difficult chase - with a wearing pitch etc!!
