This question comes out of left field, but how much should you spend on an engagement ring???

Am pretty well set, but my mate is really stressing over this considering he makes $35,000 a year and his missus is expecting a ring of at least $20,000..

What's everyone's experience on this subject???

^^^ i'd **** her off right now. What a zoomer! My mates ex missus demanded she receive a Tiffany ring, and Tiffany ring only. No surprises he dumped the pretentious mole shortly after.

A few years ago, I spent $3,500 on my missus engagement ring. A custom made in one of the jewellers in Collins Street. She is always being complimented on her ring and she loves it. Dont go too large or too small, go for quality. Tell your mate to do research.

btw, I was on about double your mate at the time. However we had a mortgage together as well. Its not the price, its the look most the time and the thought behind it as well.

That's outta line. Does she want to put him into debt just for a ****ing ring? On his salary he shouldn't spent more than 5 grand. Don't go Tiffany - you're paying for the name. The quality isn't as good as everybody thinks. There's plenty of cheaper options out there.

And your mate should tell his missus to go jump.

you could buy a decent car with that money. and he would need to work a second job, i bet the GF doesnt work.

I'd dump the dopey bitch. That just reeks of "me me me" and "I'd feel insecure if I had anything less than $20k on my finger". A girl like this will always be unsatidfied financially and it will cause arguments. He should f*** her off immediately.

Actually, do go to Tiffany & Co.

Check out the style she likes, then go to another jeweller and get them to copy it. Will be about half price and you get a better quality diamond. Do the diligance on diamonds (4 Cs) - there's heaps of stuff on the internet.

Tell him to find a new fiance. $20k on an engagement ring? Just imagine how much shes gonna want for the wedding!

The engagement ring which my wife picked out cost $4000. I got lucky when the day I went to buy it, the store had a 50% off all items for that week and got it for $2000. Score!

IM sorry but 2k is still too much.

You could get like 7 Xbox's with that and based on how long they take to **** up, could last for an entire month or 2

HA $20,000.
You could go with the flimsy rule, 2 months salary but even that's a waste. You got to be able to haggle and get the price down. Unless it's absoulutely a bargain price don't go for whatevers the price tag.

Was going to pay $5500, didn't think about haggling but on the day I bought the ring I found out a lady I knew worked there and so I got it for $4800...I make a lot more than 35K...20K for a ring is insane...any money for a ring is insane...but its what they want, so what do you do?

She'd want to be great in the kitchen.

From a chick's point of view, a 20 000 ring when a bloke makes 35 000 is bluddy outrageous. What the hell does she need a bit of bling like that for? Should be happy with what he can afford, not telling him what she expects!

And the insurance on that....mate! Check that out as the policy would have to cover outside of the house wear, be an individually insured item PLUS be covered by house and contents insurance in case it is stolen from home if she is not wearing it.

Just a thought, if she expects that as an engagement ring, what will she want for a wedding band and an eternity ring when she deems it the right time?

Haha, there's some quality posts in this thread.

But yes, she certainly does deserve a backhand to the ovaries.

$3-5,000 sounds right. You want it to be nice as its something she'll probably wear forever, hand it down to her daughter, etc. But $20,000? The b1tch must think she's J'Lo.

On a related topic, how does engagement ring choosing work? You choose it and hope she likes it? Or is that just what happens in the movies, and the practical thing is the Adam Cooney way of offering a gesture, then going to jeweller together where she picks what she wants?

20 grand? **** that.

Just play the soppy sentimentality angle. make her a tin one and say it came from the heart not the wallet or something like that.

But dont buy the good tin. Cut up a plain label can of coke (they are white on both sides so she'll never know)

$20k is outrageous, in fact anything above $500 is plain stupid. I like Funky's idea. Just pick up any old tin off the street, you can sand back the colours so it's "silver" all over anyway. I once made a metal rose just for the hell of it, out of paperclips and an old, stripped-back Tarzan's Grip tube. It's pretty damn cool, if I do say so myself. It was so cool I kept it for myself.
