England Improving

With the start of the Nat West oneday series in England with India and Sri Lanka, England seem to be on the improve. For to matches in a row England have managed to post over 250 and the top order seem to be doing a reasonable job. Question must be being asked aare England a chance to cause some upsets next year or is it just a flash in the pan.

I believe that with Nassar Hussain back in control England have rediscovered their direction. When England lost 4 test series straight it just happened to co-incide with a serious injury to their captain. If Hussain is injury free I think England have a chance of causing Australia some problems this summer after all no-one would've thought that we couldn't bowl the Kiwis out once in three test this time last year.

I think England will be competitive against Australia but they wont win the series. The Aussies have better batsman, a better wicket-keeper who can make quick and valuable runs coming in at #7, and a better bowling attack with the best leg-spinner in the world, (Warne) and the best fast bowling attack as well. (Lee, McGrath & Gillespie)

The wickets here wont move as much off the seam, therefore England will find it hard to make inroads into our batting order with their pace attack. If this happens, Ashley Giles will be targetted by the Australian left-handers Hayden, Langer & Gilchrist like he was in England in the last series.

I think England have improved, but it's a bit rich comparing them scoring 250+ against the bowling "attacks" of Sri Lanka and India on English pitches to what they are going to get over here.

Apart from Murali, Sri Lanka just cannot bowl, having said that you can only belt the crap that's bowled at you as England did very well last night.

They'll be competitive in the one dayers here over summer.

Maybe so, but they simply haven't performed mate. Zoysa?,Fernando? very poor. Stat's are decieving these days because averages can be boosted by A) Perfomances on home pitches with favourable conditions & B) They can be boosted by playing the likes of Bangladesh,Zimbabwe & West Indies.

We haven't played Bangladesh yet in a test match... it will be very interesting to see how they go against the world class bowling attack of McGrath, Warne, Lee and Gillespie.

I think we're doing pretty well but I'm not getting over confident but let's face it before this series Sri Lanka were very definitely up there as the 3rd best side in the world & they were the form team coming off about 8/9 strait Test wins so credit where it's due we did pretty well to beat them so convincingly in the end.

If we had of played our series against Bangladesh (Home & Away), Zimbabwe (Home and Away) and Sri Lanka (Home) we would not have put ourselves into the farcical position earlier this year where a drawn series in South Africa would have meant South Africa would have been test champions. They have played these teams and have got the points for it, we haven't.

Hopefully, the ACB will realise that the sport will benefit by playing these nations in other parts of Australia during our winter. I hear they are preparing Darwin for tests, but they should also be looking at Alice Springs, Canberra and Cairns/Townsville as test venues.

That'd be the only way it could work. Take the those games to places that are starved of Cricket.

And on complimenting people, it's just my opinion. Lets see England win here or in South Africa, then they'll get the plaudits.

Hang on mate, I never said England were poor or anything I was merely pointing out that Sri Lanka have been poor on this tour (looked good last night though), settle down! I'm not pommy bashing, they've improved but they have a way to go is all.

Fair comment I think.

At the moment I can't see us going to Australia & winning the Ashes but in a year or so I could see us going to South Africa & beating them..

I actually think they're pretty over rated & I was happy to see Australia give them a good arse whipping as it would have been a disgrace to see them as no1 in the Test Championship (although my feeling with that is that whoever holds it at points dring the cycle isn't important it's who gets their mits on it at the end that counts)

The same will occur in Australia as this English team is ordinary at best.

To earn respect, you must at least compete with the best teams in the world and lets face it, England haven't really measured up since 1989, and in the last 10 years are yet to find a positive method to play against Shane Warne.

Having said that, I hope England do give us a good series this summer. Marcus Trescothick I am a huge wrap for as a batsman as he is not afraid to play is natural game. I'm looking forward to seeing how he goes out here against McGrath, Lee, Gillespie and Warne.

Well to some degree you're right as before the last series we had just beaten Sri Lanka & Pakistan AWAY & we still got steamrollered.Having said that we suffered a terrible run of injuries at the start of that series, if everyone had been fit (especially the captain) & we'd played well we might have made a series out of it but I'm not totally convinced.

I reckon you're a bit harsh that we're ordinary at best, we're improving we're managing to give everyone a good game now with the exception of your lot.

I like Trescothick a lot & he's played really well on a number of occassions for us since his debut a couple of years ago BUT I seem to remember the Aussie pacemen, Gillespie in particular finding the weakness in his technique & then exploiting it ruthlessly & I'm not concinved he has sorted this out, my feeling is he has just got away with playing against pace attacks that aren't at the same level as the Australian's.

Steve Waugh and the Aussies will no doubt target Marcus Trescothick with a plan as he is one of the important batsmen in the England line up.
