It wasn't McCartney that built that list. And if the fans that I sit around at their games are to be believed he almost destroyed it before they got started.

Okay then, whoever came up with the plan, losing Higgins, Cooney, Griffen (probably a couple went through F.A), completely exposing the list, freeing up cash, then snaring Boyd, is looking like a genius atm.

Rightio then.........I put it to you, do we put our captain and previous years B&F winner on the table at season's end????

Murphy NO
Gibbs maybe. Depends on what other clubs are prepared to pay for him.

Adelaide would not even take our call if that was the offer.

Ok, no worries sounds like a plan.

If it is necessary, on-trade a Dangerfield for an obviously high pick or picks.

Bite the bullet and rebuild. This isn't the Carlton I grew up literally hating as they wanted my Saints out of business. This is a pussy soft version of not only Carlton but any football club. Grow up. Y'all want to be hated.

3 minutes out on trade week thingy last year, Footscray traded out their contracted Captain for the Boyd fella from GWS.

With a sub-culture of player managers, these deals are always on.

Please.

Is this year's draft gunna be one of those Super Thingy's????

Suddenly Footscray after 5 weeks has a new sheen about them. However for the fire sale they had last year still reckon they already had genuine guns ready to come through. For all McCartneys match day faults, he essentially built the list they have now, and given the gambles on getting rid of senior players, seems recruiting has been a master-stroke.

Not sure we're that savvy.
It's amazing what can happen when you have 22 guys who get and have a red hot crack. Strong fast players who aren't the most talented guys going around (Picken, Jong etc) but boy do they make the other team hurt. Love watching them play.

Cooney wanted to chase a premiership. The Dogs didn't need him anymore. A good result for both parties even though I do not believe Essendon are as close to a premiership as what they want to imitate they are.

Griffen demanded to leave because of the way that McCartney treated younger players. A specific case includes Jackson Macrae. Once he made all of his feelings known to the club both parties (more so Smorgan and Griffen) felt that there was too much said and done for his position on the list to be tenable. They really made the best of a bad situation getting Boyd.

Higgins was a bit of a loss for the Dogs. However, given his previous injury history he was right in chasing the money and the premiership opportunity. The Dogs also had players to cover that loss.

I will agree that they've had very good, if not incredible, list management. Not only have they nailed the majority of their high picks over the past several years but they've been off the charts good in the middle rounds of the draft and later. In the same draft that we drafted Kane Lucas in the first round they drafted Liam Picken at #86 (veteran from Williamstown VFL) while against Sydney they also had key contributions from the likes of Tory Dickson (pick #57, 2011), Luke Dahlhaus (pick #70 in 2011), Lin Jong (#9 rookie draft, 2011), Jason Johannisen (pick #105, 2012), Mitch Honeychurch (pick #60, 2013). While they'll eventually replace a few of them so far as a best 22 goes before they make their push towards a dynasty the hand those players will have in getting them there will not go unrewarded.

It goes to show how important getting not only the top picks right in a draft are and trading but also the rest of the draft. You can really create a list that has a lot of depth quite quickly. It gives me some hope so far as our club is. However, we need to start getting the actual development part spot on. As everybody knows the Dogs haven't ever had the greatest facilities at their disposal. In fact, I'd suggest that ours puts theirs to shame. However, they make the most of their human resources.

They had a good balance of young and old talent and where in an good position to trade out experienced talent, young guns like Wallis, Libba, Dalhous, Picken and others, whilst maintaining, Murphy, Matthew Boyd etc they've been able trade out older players and whilst under pinned well with a great smattering of talent.
They also spent a bit of time on the south end of the ladder
We don' t have that depth if young talent
We've moved on a lot of older players already, Waite, Eddie, Jeffy etc
Saints have done it but like us haven't quite the depth of the Dogs

Not really a master stroke of list management

For F.A and all that bollocks..................Danger for Gibbs.

Start the dialogue.

There, I said it.
I'd rather Gibbs for a Gws gun

Okay, but only because you used your manners.

Now the only thing left to do is convince Dangerfield we are the best option in Melbourne. Should be easy if we can convince everyone he wants to 'come home' but doesn't want to go to Geelong.....

I think moving on players from the top 5-10 on our list is possibly the most self destructive thing Carlton can do at the moment. We'll go from being 5 years from a premiership to being decades away if we go down that path.

This whole "trade Murphy, trade Gibbs" agenda is deja vu from last year in the first couple of months of the season, and its starting to look more like an emo kid cutting themselves than a genuine strategy for improvement at the club.

Gibbs put his hand up to commit to the future of the club by signing a five year deal, regardless of his current short term on field performance I think that should actually earn him some respect from us as fans not this repetitive knee jerk nonsense. Loyalty works both ways and if we want quality players to buy into Carlton its ridiculous that as soon as the going gets tough people want to treat them like cattle.

By the way that doesn't mean his current on-field performance should be tolerated by the club, but he is hardly alone there.

How many teams bring in that many new players to their system and do well? Not many.[/QUOTE]

How many of those 33 have been dropped?

I think Footscray also got lucky with a lot of father son selections, Libba, Wallis,Hunter& Cordy its the same with the much spruiked Geelong team with Hawkins, Scarlett, Ablett and Collingwood premiership side Cloke, Shaws. These free kicks in the draft make there overall recruiting appear better than it really is.

I agree to an extent, but if the magical offer comes for them then we must consider it.. However I agree that we need as many top 20 picks as we can get, 3 at a minimum, with 2 of them top 10. I would have Yarran as the one I am most prepared to lose to get us another pick.

Murphy or Yarran rather than Gibbs on the trade table for me....

Yep agree, purely because i think Gibbs is the better player of the 3. Yarran we could do without, his strengths are wasted on us and at the end of the day he is just a half back flanker/wingmen, where Bryce and Murphy could play midfield, half back, forward etc especially as they get older, where the only thing that will happen with Yaz is that he will lose his pace and that's his main weapon.

He is also out of contract next year and could walk away as a free agent anyway. I would love to keep all 3, but if we have to lose one I reckon it should be Yarran.
