hahahahahahah

Imagine getting excited that a former Real Madrid and Bayern Munich footballer for the past 6 years created chances for Everton. Fun fact, Everton’s Lucas Digne was in the top 8 for most created chances in the Premier League last season, TAA was top 3 and Norwich City’s Emiliano Buendía was in the top 4. What a stat to hang your hat on lol.

Leeds were definitely clinical and took their chances. Whilst I am a fan of xG stats they can also be misleading when they stat pad very bad chances. I looked into the Spurs vs Everton numbers where we only had 2 chances of note and they had us down for 9. So it finished 1.27 to 0.82.

They rounded the keeper (0.53), Richarlison fluffed 2 ones trying to curl it into the far post (0.04 & 0.06), James did the same (0.02) + the actual goal (0.04). The latter 4 chances there were given the same ratings as tame headers from corners that barely made it to Pickford. Kane had a header from a corner that he barely got to that got 3x that of the actual goal itself. I didn't watch Kane's header thinking great chance when he got his head to it but it's somehow a 0.12 chance.

If you click on the tweet though it also talks about shots on target, xG is only one of the three stats they cited.

Shots on target can also be tame like a header that bounces before a keeper vs. cleared off the line. Both register 1.

Were there many of those in Liverpool v Leeds or Liverpool v Norwich? I don't remember any from Saturday night but maybe I was falling asleep.

Just because Penandes has been a flop apart from scoring penalties..

Norwich game I remember watching and not thinking they were amazing so I dare say some of their 6 on target were tame

Fair enough, but on some level you do need to use stats for guidance, whether it's a manufactured stat like xG or the raw underlying stats, and if they're both telling the same story it's pretty consistent. I don't think the whole methodology of football statistics should be thrown out just because it says Leeds weren't actually quite as threatening as people thought they were just because they ran around a lot.

Also I've always used understat for xG and they don't have last year's game and they are a bit worse for Norwich than the tweets

I haven't read the catalogue of opinions in this thread on Leeds. But I think they would have been very lucky to get a point out of that game. That being said their high pressing gave them a chance to put a far superior side under pressure to try and create big mistakes and that worked well. For a recently promoted side that's as good as they can expect to do. Their problems are at the other end where they gifted far too many chances through their own undoing.

Watching the goal highlights again this morning, I must have been sleep deprived last night to even accept the bizarre argument that it popped up off Klich's knee, it's a clean hit of his hand and a stonewall pen.

Lol come on man it absolutely does not 'deflect' off his leg. If it ripples past his shorts that doesn't make it a deflection. The ball doesn't deviate from the shot path and hits an outstretched, unnatural arm.

It's not like one of those ones that someone strikes into someone's boot that pops up and hits a hand.

Not sure how you can't see it, it's pretty clear. Takes a 90 degree deflection. Cold light of day I agree it's got to be given.

The big bonus about Leeds' performance was it kept you fairly quiet for most of the match. Looks like it hasn't lasted though.

Some fair extenuating circumstances there, confident the defence will settle in over the next few weeks - hopefully it's quick enough to prevent too much bleeding.

Spurs were awful. Fancy losing to Everton at home. Just lacked any sort of spark at all.

Would have been good to get Gero’s thoughts on the game but looks like his internet cut out around the time Everton scored which is unfortunate.

With our fixture list we should focus on the cups and finish hopefully top half in the league. We are way off finishing top 4 so if we want CL back then we have to take the first team into every Europa League match
