VIOLENT CONDUCT

Violent conduct is when a player uses or attempts to use excessive force or brutality against an opponent when not challenging for the ball, or against a team-mate, team official, match official, spectator or any other person, regardless of whether contact is made.

In addition, a player who, when not challenging for the ball, deliberately strikes an opponent or any other person on the head or face with the hand or arm, is guilty of violent conduct unless the force used was negligible.

That's for striking with the hand or arm, not headbutting.

Then why wasn’t Smith carded or sent off for putting his head in first?

Because he doesn't make the aggressive motion, he just touches heads. As Magma says, it's the aggressive motion once the heads are touching.

Looked very very minor. Seen that happen a lot of times and the ref just pushes both guys away and tells them to calm down. Maybe a yellow at most.
Tried to get a clip of it up on reddit. Mancs and scousers all in unison that it was soft as butter, and it was.
What I would say though is that I have no sympathy for him. He put himself in a stupid situation where he’s allowed the ref to make a decision, and he did.

He has no one to blame but himself.

I can understand protecting the head but rubbing foreheads together shouldn't result in reds. The ref should caution the players.

Headbutts should be reds though, something I don't believe Richarlison did.

Better to just stamp it out all together or else you let it creep in.

Wasn’t a headbutt, butting is a strike. Origin from rifle butting.

Contact was already there and it was a push. Either way it still falls under the violent conduct charge and the force was clearly negliable and less than a strike with the arm or hand.

You can argue the definitions of words all you want, but it's contact with the head accompanied by aggressive movement, it's a red.

Contact with the head has always been and always will be treated differently as you can do a lot of damage.

I'm furious, I have him in my Fantasy team, but it's textbook. See the video I posted of something quite similar (and that's just the first that comes to mind).

Does Everton fight it to get him back early? Or no hope?

No hope. Not sure if they add another game for a frivolous challenge though so maybe may as well, but they're wasting their time.

This will now mean out of 3 games, we've played 180 minutes with 11 and 90 minutes with 10.

Roughly rounded up but that is a staggering amount of minutes, we should have beaten Wolves and Bournemouth.

Think Smith is very fortunate to escape without at least a yellow card even though he initiated contact if we are going to be super strict on this.

Having seen the replay not sure where this conclusion comes from? Richarlison is the one that leans in.

He walks towards him, they lock heads and he doesn't even walk off when it happens. He stood his ground.

You're allowed to stand your ground mate, don't think that means he initiates. :D

Having argued with SM, give up. He doesn't know when he is wrong

I really don't see how I am, Richie is the one that connects with the head. I don't know how you can blame Smith for 'initiating' contact for walking towards him and then not backing away when Richie leans in.

That being said, really doesn't matter, just a weird narrative that's all.
