After the weekend's round of matches the race for the title looks like this:

Arsenal - 21 matches played; W-14, D-7, L-0; goals: for 40, against 14 = GD +26; 49 pts.

Man Utd - 20 matches played; W-16, D-1, L-3; goals: for 40, against 14 = GD +26; 49 pts.

I would have thought, based on these numbers, that Man Utd would be leading the comp. I always thought that the whole point of professional competition was to win, not 'not to lose'. In that case, the devils should be leading. Obviously, it appears that 'loses' are analysed ahead of 'wins' in the criteria to determine a champion if teams are tied.

Does anyone know if this is a fifa, uefa or fa directive? I believe it should be the other way round. The current situation only promotes negativity.

But you could also argue Arsenal are undefeated for the season and deserve to lead the table. All depends how you look at it I guess.

I thought wins were put 1st as well. If points and GD are the same they should have a play-off like in Serie A.

From the FA rules ...

7. Subject to Rule B.29, if any 2 or more Clubs have scored the same number of points, have the same goal difference and have scored the same number of goals in League Matches in that Season they shall be deemed to occupy the same position in the table.

14. If at the end of the Season either the League Champions or the Clubs to be relegated or the question of qualification for other competitions cannot be determined because 2 or more Clubs are equal on points, goal difference and goals scored, the Clubs concerned shall play off one or more deciding League Matches on neutral grounds, the format, timing and venue of which shall be determined by the Board.

Sooooo. Man Utd and Arsenal were in equal first and would need a play-off. I imagine some people were using the convention of using alphabetical order to separate two equal teams.

That would be great! I notice there are no provisions if 2 teams are tied for 4th, surely they would need a play-off to decide who goes into the CL?

At least they use goal difference (Serie A doesn't and it caused Atalanta to be relegated last year).

I would have thought that covered it.

It could be a repeat of the 88/89 season where Arsenal won the league on goal difference. Liverpool had the same points as us, but we won because we beat them 2-0 away or something like that.

bless you Micky Thomas

When those numbers read "38" worry about it then.

in man utd's case, if they were to worry about it at the end of rd 38, it will be too late.

Had to win by 2 clear goals to win the title & George Graham actually said to the troops don't score too early!:D

It was 0-0 at half time & he said 'Perfect, this way they won't have a chance to re-organise & come back at us' .

In the end we actually had the same goal differecne but won because boring Arsenal had scored more goals than the ever so exciting & skillful scousers.
