Universal Love Erin Phillips Appreciation Thread

Interesting news that Erin is going to return to playing basketball with her Junior club, West Adelaide.
One would think this means 2022 is her last football season.

On a side note, I'd bet the farm on Erin returning to Port in some capacity in 2023. Port have Rachel Sporn has one of their main AFLW people. Sporn is also a legend with West Adelaide Basketball, although her daughters played with Forestville.

I think it's a bit more complicated than simply saying she's a Port girl or a Crows girl. She's both.

She adores her teammates, no question about that. I wouldn't be surprised if she finishes her playing career with us (potentially this year). She would be retiring as a club and league legend, as decorated as a player can be at this stage of the competition.

However, there is always a big allure to being on the ground floor for something new, and being a part of a brand new AFLW side, whether it's in a coaching role, playing role, or some mixture of the two, would be very appealing to her. The fact that it's a Port Adelaide AFLW side would only add to the allure based on her lifelong love of that club.

It would also give her a chance to honour her father who has stood by her every step of the way, every time some mouth-breather has asked him if he's "disappointed you didn't have a son" while she was winning medals all over the world. The father who, despite bleeding black and white and being a Port legend of the highest repute, happily pulled on a Crows jumper and cheered from the stands to unconditionally support her.

I don't think it would tarnish Erin's legacy one bit if she ended up at Port. She will always be a Crows legend in my eyes.

Port Magpies were her dads employer.

They don’t exist anymore.
I don't think you know the family very well if you think port were solely her dad's employer.
They luv that club it's like a religion to them.
She only joined us because port didn't have a team. Soon they will have a team and she will join them.

We are blessed to have her but I reckon she'll be with Port's inaugural group. Maybe one final year as a playing/assistant coach. Injury permitting obviously. I wouldn't read too much into returning to basketball, she can probably do both, even with some degree of overlapping seasons.

She’s a crows girl. She’s the daughter of a Port man.

She should stay here and preserve her legacy, not throw it in the bin for her dads at another club that chose China over her originally.

Wasn't she their first signing? She came to us when Port had to abandon their bid when they found out they had zero chance.

It wasn't an official signing but yes, they announced that pending a successful bid she would be playing for them, from memory as their inaugural captain. Obviously she had informally agreed.

Ultimately they decided to focus their efforts elsewhere. Thank goodness for that! As for Erin, she narrowed it down to us and Collingwood, but thought we were taking the whole women's footy thing more seriously and went with us. It's easy to forget but Collingwood were garbage in 2017.

We definitely wouldn't have won the premiership in 2017 without her. Harder to say for sure in 2019. We were so dominant that we likely would have won most of those games anyway, but remember we only qualified for the finals by one match.

Phillips loves one thing more than Port Adelaide, and that’s money.

I’f we want her to stay at the Adelaide Crows, we just offer her more money than Port Adelaide.

They didn't really choose to focus elsewhere, they wanted a team as much as we did. Neither of us had a hope until we partnered with the NT. The AFL had said there weren't enough quality players in SA but we forced their hand when partnering with the indigenous rich NT. They couldn't say no. It was pure genius really.

I agree with that. But you really think Crows will offer more than Port?

Nope. We will see her as a 36 year old with 2 ACL’s to her name and offer her an appropriate contract.

Port Adelaide on the other hand will see it as a major win and make her signing a priority, that would definitely disrupt their team balance. Especially if she’s done her 3rd ACL yesterday.

I think Port will also expect that it will be a hard task to dislodge quality players from the Crows. In the absence of a big haul of quality players, Erin would fill the void as a big, emotional signing.

Zrieka missed a late goal. The one who sat out Pride Round because she refused to wear the guernsey.
I wonder how her teammates feel about that one.
Pride round and LGBTQ issues in general being a big thing in AFLW.
You'd think there would have to be a level of tension there. Wonder how they manage it.

I'd suggest now that she's not in the WNBA she's probably not earning much.
What else does she do for a living?

She stood up in front of her team mates and explained her reasons like an adult. I have no doubt the playing group accepted her explanation and whilst they may not agree with her not participating in the round understood the reasons why. It takes a strong person to stand up in front of a group of their peers and explain why they will not do something.

Anyways, it was up to her teammates to be offended/not offended, not Twitter. I mean, I understand her reasons, haven't much time for any religion but understand those that believe in it have strong views. She could have faked an injury and sat out but she did the honourable thing and tell the truth no matter how unpalatable it may be. That is integrity.

Partly Erin Phillips but I read somewhere (not sure where). Are PA allowed to sign up to 8 of our players? Criminal if true.

I'm not 100% sure. As far as I know, they will be able to sign up to 14 players from existing clubs, but I don't think they've clarified what the maximum number from each list is. Eight players certainly sounds in line with what happened in previous seasons, when clubs from states which went from one team to two were able to lose eight. Brisbane lost 16 players over two years of expansion signings in 2019/2020, which makes their premiership in 2021 all the more impressive.

Of course, the players have to agree to it as well, Port can't just take them from our list unless they agree to leave. The biggest danger will be those high quality players who are not quite on our tier 1 payment level that would be offered a pay rise (and perhaps some leadership opportunities) to move over. I'm not sure if it is public knowledge which tier players are in, but you'd have to be worried about players like Eloise Jones, Chelsea Biddell, Montana McKinnon, Ashleigh Woodland etc who have been pivotal this season but almost certainly won't be in our top tier of players in 2023 (Jones maybe). Not sure where Sarah Allan sits either. Presumably we will also lose some fringe players who struggle to get/stay in the side who will have greater opportunity to play in Port's side.

There was some talk on the main board about the Crows potentially losing one of Marinoff or Hatchard, but you'd have to think the Crows would move Heaven and earth to keep those two together.
