We do better with our late picks than we do with our early ones

I think we've picked the wrong sorts of players with our early picks though. Davies, Harvey, and McAlistair were all punts.

We should be more conservative this year and just pick someone we are confident about.

But I agree with Nandoz, we've done well with our later picks. But I was always surprised that Welsh went at #47. He had a very good season for Calder in 2001. You would have thought that he'd go second round. I think we were very happy to get him, and even more happy now.

yeah sheeds seems to like to gamble our frist round... i would like one of the "big names" for a change just so i can garentee a reasonable player.

The status of the name doesn't necessarily represent the quality of the player, obviously.

A prime example - Hamish McIntosh. Whilst North fans will tell you he's a gun with a big future (and I'm ready to be proved wrong) he struggles to get a game in their VFL side, let alone their AFL side.

I personally was bitterly disappointed with Geelong when they passed up McIntosh, after having read some of the stuff posted on various forums anybody would have thought he was the next Carey!

Still, looks like they (GFC) got it right.

Sorry about hijacking the Essendon board, but please mate, check the facts before unloading.

The week before he was put back in the reserves he played a blinder, but was dropped for reasons other than performance. He went back and took 45 marks in three weeks. Goalden hawk saw 2 of these games and was bemused that he was a) dropped at all and b) Hawthorn didn't pick him up at no.8. A week before his demotion he was set for a call up into the AFL.

Carlos spoke to Dean Laidley mid year, and he said that Hamish was the most exciting young footballer he had worked with. Our relationship with the Port coach who dropped him soured and despite making the VFL prelim final (in which Hamish kicked 3 goals 3 in the wet) he was sacked. Make of that what you will.

He played in the finals and played very well.

18yo 202 cm, 102 kg blokes tend to take a while. Especially ones that are still growing up and sideways.

The question needs to be asked, why was he dropped? If not for form, then what?

Carlos asked the man himself, and he said Dunbar (Port coach) had a crack at him for giveing away a 50 and not chasing enough in the forward line. The kid was a mess. An AFL debut was one half decent week away.

He went back, played ruck and dominated. Sav was dropped back, and Hamish couldn't back at FF and David Hale and Adrian De Luca were playing very well in the ruck. Wasn't a spot.

As soon as Sav got promoted, he was back in and played in the finals.
