Don't think it is that simple. Carlton are putting together a very tidy unit. Even with Hird and Lloyd in we still would have had to have been at the top of our game to win.

With those two in the side we are at least an 8 goal better team.

Lloyd adds structure. Hird adds the rest.

Rubbish. Even with Lloyd and Hird in your team, we can still manage to beat you. Or don't you remember our last game against each other in the season proper?

Who knows what difference Hird and Lloyd would've made? Maybe that would force Carlton to be more desperate and play a little harder, or make Essendon complacent? Fact remians, even with a full-strength side or close at your disposal, Carlton has that knack of upsetting you.

Agreed.

But Thrawn's argument doesn't object to Jaymin's point at all..

Jaymin's point is that Essendon would have won with Hird and Lloyd in the team.

As Essendon supporters we should know better. No matter where the team's are placed on the ladder or the relative strengths, when Essendon meets Carlton all bets are off. Even with a full side we still need to be at our best to beat Carlton.

From what i saw of Carlton on Sunday....Hird and Lloyd would have been the difference.

Providing they played good games. Last time round Sporn beat Hird and Lloyd kicked 1 (although he was injured in the game). Carlton won.

That's way off the mark.

The Blues were wasteful in the opening term, when they had double the amount of scoring shots than Essendon but only an eight-point lead to show for it.

Carlton won more of the clearances and at one stage had double the inside 50's. I thought the scoreboard flattered Essendon some what in the end.

Also I think if all Essendon supporters were honest they would say that they would have liked to see more from:

A.Henneman
J.Reynolds
J.Watson
J.Laycock
S.Hunt
N.Lovett-Murray
M.Bullen
R.Dyson
B.Stanton
D.Cupido
A.Lovett
M.Bolton

With the lack of senior players, they need to standup. They didn’t the Bombers now have more questions than answers after Sunday.

Thought that Bradley was pretty good and will develop, while Thomas showed something. Welsh is polished and will be a very good player for along time, while I'm undecided on McVeigh and without putting any pressure on the boy think that he is the only likely player to have a major role in the midfield this season.

PS: I missed only 2 Essendon games all last season.

A.Henneman - We don't expect to see more from him, we don't want to see any of him.

J.Reynolds - Only played about four weeks of football last season, so badley needed the run. Didn't do much, but I'd expect he will build up slowly.

J.Watson - Took a hit early in the first quarter that concussed him. He saw the hit coming, took it and dished the handball through traffic that set up a goal to Lucas. Set up another goal after making a great tackle and winning the ball and giving off again to Lucas. Also gave the handball for Bullen's goal. Under the circumstances wasn't a bad effort.

J.Laycock - Don't think he adjusted to the new ruck rules well, but I thought he was okay. Not great, but still a kid.

S.Hunt - See Henneman. Did a couple of good things, a couple of bad things.

N.Lovett-Murray - Not in our top 30 players.

M.Bullen - Was tagging. Got a bit of it. Just a player. Kicked a nice goal.

R.Dyson - Only really got a run in the last quarter and he had 8 possessions. Not bad going. Thought he was good.

B.Stanton - Thought Stants was really good. Used more as a winger last season this was his first crack at getting his hands dirty. Kicked a lovely goal, could have easily kicked three. Found space at times and worked pretty hard.

D.Cupido - See Reynolds. Would have liked more from him.

A.Lovett - His goal was fantastic. His defensive running was a big improvement from 2004. Didn't get much time.

M.Bolton - Had the better of Kouta.

I think we answered a lot of questions. What you have to remember is that these kids were played against seasoned players. It was the first real hit out without their senior team-mates around them. Experience takes time, if we had of won the game with that side, a lot more questions would have been asked of Carlton.

How many of the kids mentioned. Raised their hand and said. "Sheeds. You must pick me round one?"

Stanton, Dyson, Watson and Thomas.

Laycock over the Pre-Season has done enough. His game in Sydney was fantastic.

Not sure why you put Bolton on that list, but he definately had the better of Kouta.

The only player out of those 4 you mentioned that could possibly press for senior selection would be Thomas who showed some good signs on the weekend. The other 3 have been at the club a few years now and have been given plenty of oppurtunity and have shown nothing to suggest they will be good players

Stanton (still 18) and Dyson are second year players and have done more than enough to suggest they will be good footballers. Watson (still 19) is a third year player.

Have you actually seen them play?

Is Nathan Lovett Muarry still on our senior list?

What were the clearance stats? Curious to see how the dons went without JJ & Hird

Lovett-Murray is on the rookie list. Sheedy suggested a couple of weeks ago that he is likely to be the one promoted for Johns.

I thought the clearance's (especially in the middle) were an improvement. We were ahead at one stage from the center, but didn't see the final stats. McPhee and Bullen had a few.

Are you really that ignorant?????

Stanton is only 18 & Dyson 19 you moron. They only came to the club last year & both played a fair bit of senior for their first year I would have thought. I & most other Essendon supporters have been very impressed with what they've shown. Thats as stupid as me saying Spanderman has had his chances & is obvioulsy never going to be any good!

The more people that post totally ignorant dribble like that about our players the more confident I get that we've obviously got them worried.

You obviously havent got an eye for talent with ridiculous comments like that. You can be as confident as you want but normally young players in their first or second years at a club do show something to suggest they will be good players in the future.Stanton and Dyson havnt showed anything to suggest that as yet.Players like Ball,Goddard,Judd,Cooney,Couglan to name a few all showed something in their first years of footy that they were going to be quality players.Take your your Essendon hat off for once and come to the realisation that without Hird or Lloyd in the side Essendon are a very ordinary side with not many youngsters who can take up the slack

Last time i checked...Lloyd and Hird were still playing for Essendon?

Ball, Goddard, Judd and Cooney were top three draft picks. There aren't many like that around. Infact outside those four there aren't many who have made an immediate impact. Ball didn't play in his first season. Goddard still has question marks over his head and Coughlan only played five games in his first season, getting 12 disposals in his first match, his next best was three.

That is possibly one of the most stupid post's I've read on here. It is very, very rare for kids to come in and win games of football. Dyson and Stanton both made an impact on Sunday and they have done in other games. That's all we want and need from them at this stage of their very young career's.

Judd, Ball, Goddard, Couglan and now into their 5th season's. Dyson and Stanton are into their second.

We still have Hird and Lloyd. These kids just need experience and that is exactly what they are getting.

I'm sure you were sitting back in 1997/98 boasting how Heffernan, Lloyd, Lucas, Caracella, Blumfield, Solomon and Jason Johnson were no good.

I would suggest you all take the $1.95 on offer for the Bombers to make the eight. Sounds like money in the bank.

One question. Who will play in the midfield this season?

1. Jason Johnson
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.

Hird, Stanton, Dyson, Welsh, McPhee, Solomon, Alvey will no doubt all spend some time in there as well.

Doesnt matter if they were high draft picks or not. They still showed something to suggest they would be good players.I am not saying Dyson & Stanton have to win games of footy for you but they just dont have anything in their games to suggest they will be good players and Watson who has been there slightly longer is in the same boat.
