corrodes the engine, wears the cylinders, and costs next to nothing.

and now the service stations are using it to dilute their petrol

They've been doing it for years, our petrol is on par with third world standards.

Anyway, ethanol should be in your drink, not in your engine.

Diesel!! You can go to your fish and chip shop, take his old oil (well old by their standards), filter it, and plonk into your car, then vroom.
Big thing in UK right now, so stores have been asked to limit large vegetable oil sales to individuals by the petrol companies:p

Diesel is noisy and pollutes badly though :o

and BMW will not honour any warranty claims if you have been using petrol containing ethanol. so be careful!!

Diesel, the common man's fuel! Diesel invented the engine for this very purpose, so that people could grow their own fuel. It was only later that the oil companies turned it into a oil thing. They're not so noisy, I've owned a couple of diesel cars in my time, and while they do produce more soot, especially in the micro scale, they are far more friendlier in terms of greenhouse gases than regular petrol.

Can anyone explain why ethanol is put into petrol in the first place if it is so bad?.. I know it is for diluting but why?

What I have heard is you add it to petrol & costs heaps less than normal petrol, in the mean time it totally screws up your car, also petrol still stays the same price, even though it costs the garages heaps less,

Just another rip off.

Yes.. but why ethanol if they have evidence that it mucks up engines.. that can't be good for sales..

well you cant add water to dilute petrol (they would if they could believe me) because petrol and water dont mix.

the next cheapest alternative is ethanol (and ethanol isnt taxed... doubly cheap for them).

put it this way, if petrol costs the oil companies 80c a litre and they sell it for 85c, by adding 10% ethanol it now costs them around 72c a litre and they still sell it for 85c.

do you think they give a damn about your car?? hell, some of them even have workshops that are just waiting for you to bring your car in with engine troubles.
