LOL, you have changed the figure, I was talking about 800k. 400k won't get you past teams in the PSD. 800k is affordable for ST Kilda considering they are way under the minimum salary cap as it is.
Ok so take money from Walker and Simpson's contracts too. Again, you are either outsmarting AFL recuiters or have the wrong idea.

Nah, he's largely right. Have a read of http://www.aflpa.com.au/images/uploads/AFL_Rules_-_June_2013_FINAL.pdf.

It states that contract specifications have to be for a minimum of two years (so he's wrong on that) but your theory of renegotiations doesn't really work - the clubs need to provide their salary cap info to the AFL before the PSD and then the AFL will notify them of any players they can't afford. That happened last year with GWS and us not being able to afford Tippett.

So unless Longer was aiming to get to Carlton, they wouldn't have advance notification of how much slary cap to clear, and will be left looking like fools if they renegotiate but still miss out on their target.

I have no idea what Melbourne and GWS's finaly salary cap figures will look like, so won't comment on them picking up Longer.

we need a player i think maybe armitage and a pick ? the draft is thin after 30 they reckon

We are going to be left with a bunch if picks, but too many are past 30, seemly the cut off or talent in this draft. We need to find a way to get our picks inside 30.

At the worst could possibly be Carlton 33 and Port 34 (which in all likelihood will improve) excluding Karnesis, so they are not that far off the cutoff. If things pan out as expected/hoped it would only be the 33 pick that is over the 30 in regards to players of substance lost.

Perhaps the selections will not be as bad as thought............. & there will be talent their if that is what we are left with. Even at 33 its not as if it the talent just ceases at 30, there is bound to be differing thoughts amongst recruiters in their rankings.

I think it will be interesting to see if we do make some moves earlier in the week to get in some of these selections, in order to enable time to package some up for other moves.

I bet if you could get every team to name their top 30, there'd probably be 45 names or more in total. I think we'll be fine if we end up with picks in the 30-35 range.

I think I have said before. .,let's be happy with the core group of loyal players who have chosen to stay.
Yeo is the only one I am truly disappointed with. Must have been made a very good offer when he went home.
Someone else will take the opportunity.
Life goes on.
Go Lions in 2014.hopefully with some decent people in charge and our boys with a lot to prove.
Be nice to still have Blacky round the club.even if it is short term.
He would be great in a players welfare role as well as assistant coach.

...
Port have space. They wanted a big name FA at the start of the year and declared they had the money.
...
Sorry to point this out but you got your Adelaide clubs mixed up.

There's a good likelihood one of the most talented players in the draft will be available here in Dayle Garlett, maybe we need to take a punt on someone like that I we have 5 picks between 20-35 and maybe someone like Mitch thorp?

I thought about it for a bit and I really like the Buntine/Bugg idea, providing they'd want to come up here. Instant replacements. I really rate Bugg.

As for the Saints it's going to be very interesting. Plechen is an odd duck so we might get a decent deal or he might find some way to root us.

Opposition supporters please bugger off with PSD talk unless it has some sort of basis in fact, there's still 5 days left and there's always heaps done towards the end. It just clogs up the thread and makes you look dumb.

Can't wait for trade period to be over and we can all move on. There's plenty of times when they've said it's a weak draft and clubs have picked up decent players past pick 30. We have a very decent core of young players and hopefully we'll all look back at this trade period as a success for the club. We'll improve next year and be pushing for finals, bookmark it.

most drafts have 4 or 5 really good players between 25 and 35..Its a bit of a lucky dip.

That's incorrect....minimum can be one.

Thanks to dlanod, post 5502.

So the minimum is 2 years contract. If saints are willing to rack up a 2 year - 1 mill contract - point to note, purely on potential - to get him across the line and then negotiate another 2 year extension for 100k to even out the contract, that would be a massive leap of faith from them. Not to mention Longer would realize he will get better $$$ elsewhere as he would be hitting his prime.

We can still throw another twist by giving pick 7 to GWS for a player+ swap and let them be the road block at both draft and PSD time. Lot to play out here.

You can be sure on draft day that any club recruiters who have a pick after 30 will be wrapped as they will be shocked that players they rated in the top 30 were still available.

I think this hits the nail on the head about recruiters and later picks. The talent is still there but the risk of finding it is a little higher. Lower draft picks are generally, but by no means absolutely, more likely to convert their talent into AFL level output.

Later picks have talent but may be considered missing some ingredient that would see them fall down the order. I seem to recall a pick 31 we got a few years ago now from WA who had lots of good qualities but was considered too slow to go higher. He turned out OK despite the risk.

The Simon Blacks of this world are the once in a generation late picks (and indeed once in a generation players) but enough players of high quality, while less common, are in the draft after the first or second round. Good drafting teams will identify likely late draft picks and ours has a pretty good record of doing so.

I think we can be assured of a few things based on a couple of decades of drafting evidence:

Some low picks will disappoint, some will be merely average AFL players for the duration of their careers, a handful will make a quick impact but fade over time, quite a few will gradually become stars and one or two will be superstars of the game.

Some high draft picks will defy their draft order and become stars and quite a few will be above average players. Some will develop slowly but go on to become much loved fixtures in their teams, and some will fade quickly.

Drafting isn't a lucky dip but it is only partly an evidence-based operation. A fair bit of good fortune and educated guessing is involved whether we like it or not.

Whoever took pick 31 for us all those years ago was probably rolling the dice on one of five or six guys. He picked a winner and man who would become a legend for us. Talent does not cease to exist after pick 30, it just involves more careful digging. But the talent is there.

If Port trade for a pick better than 23, Brisbane needs to force them to also give up pick 34.

Reason being is that Port, instead of dealing with Brisbane, can tell Polec to enter the ND and use that pick on Polec. This will then push the draft order down one place, and so they would basically get the 33rd best player in the draft instead of the 34th best.

Anyone know if contract extensions have been offered to Paparone and Mayes as yet? I would like to think we would get some sort of undertaking that they will sign beyond next year.

I'd be throwing a big multi year contract in front of Mayes, if this hasn't already happened. We don't want to be having to accept a late first rounder (at best) for him next year. Or a second rounder for Paps.

Don't know about Paparone, but Mayes has already knocked back our offer of a one year contract extension. On the back of his form this past season, a one year extension is pretty insulting and surely would've been worthy of a multiple year extension.

Hence my lack of confidence responsible in that area of the club. All year only being worried about Rich, Hanley and Leuenberger and rightly so too, but surely work should also have been done on getting these 5 sooks to sign much earlier in the season.
