Anyone own exotic or unusual pets, like snakes, turtles, rats, ferrets, etc?

I had a bearded dragon, a couple of rats, three ferrets and at one point turtle-sitted when my brother went overseas.

I'd love to own a fox, I hear they've got personality like dogs but move around more like a feline but sadly it's not legal here. Sadly these are not legal either:

Ferrets look interesting. A friend let hers sleep in the bottom of the fridge when it was hot.

But any pet is limiting, with travel and being spontaneous

My brother owned a lizard for a while. One day he and I went out into the garden, caught about 20 coackroaches, and dropped them in his enclosure.

He gobbled up every single one.

I wouldn't mind having a turtle but two puppies already do my head in enough.

I know someone who used to have an otter back in the States.

I had a rat when I lived in Moscow. Awesome pets. Would get one here but don't think my dogs would appreciate it. Well, maybe for dinner.
If you ever do think about getting one, get two because they're very social animals. Unless you spend lots of time with them, they tend to get bored and depressed.

My wife is a primary school teacher. Believe me, that book is sacred text in my house.

His name is Pugsley though.
Don't know if your wife told you, but my kid loves that book. A good choice from Pugsley.

Always wanted turtles, small enough to hold more than one in a tank.

Otherwise having grown up partly in England tortoises weren't rare pets there so I always thought they would be awesome to have. Unfortunately you can only keep native reptiles as pets in Australia so that then rules out even better options like chameleons and iguanas.

How many times have you read that to her now? :D

I remember going to a pet shop in England and they were selling galahs for 800 quid a go. You can wonder through the south parklands here on a good day and net yourself enough birds to buy a house over there.

Not really exotic anymore but my great grandfather bred guinea pigs on his dads farm. His dad had to start killing them with his pick but convinced my great grandad that they were coming down with disease.

Most exotic pet I've had is probably cichlids which are smarter than your average fish but still more room ambience than pet.

I've never owned a galah that wasn't a prick (I've had two).

I think they all are. Even the ones that are trained and know phrases etc. still have a bastard streak in them.

There's a big cockatoo at one of the wildlife parks over here. I forget his name (assume Billy for this) but he's tame and says 'Billy wants a scratch' and motions towards the edge of his cage and tilts his head. Clever boy. And then once you give him a scratch he turns around and bites you. Sneaky kent.

We had a pretty good bloke of a sulphur crested cockatoo growing up, was out of the nest and hand reared and pretty loving but the older they get they seem to get grouchy. George would be about 25 now and whenever I head up home for a visit he doesn't wan't a bar of anyone.

One thing I noticed is if they don't like a person it's for life. One of our galahs got out once and we found him in some trees over near Waverley Park. Wouldn't come down until one of my brothers wandered over and that dive bomb from that height straight into my brothers face would haunt him still to this day.

Some form of parrot is probably my most realistic next pet. Hand reared rainbow lorikeets are amazing. A few years back, pre-marriage, I was pretty damn close to getting a macaw.

A macaw would be awesome. Or a toucan.

have you seen Auzzie the eagle? She lives at a wildlife park here in Perth and flies a few laps of the stadium before West Coast games. Brilliant bird.

I think I've seen her on TV, it'd be pretty impressive to see in the flesh. Didn't they use her to scare off pigeons or am I mixing that up with talk they were going to do something similar at the MCG?
