I was watching the North-St. Kilda match and they did a piece on the 1980 Night grand final, where the Roos marked at the siren (which was drowned out by the crowd) and kicked the game winner (while the stands emptied simultaneously).

Anyway, there was a very amusing little piece after that, where they showed a scoreboard operator demonstrating an exploding ball. A tiny explosive was place inside the ball, activated by a button. When the time ran off in the quarter/game, he would activate the explosive by pressing the button and blowing up the ball.

They had a Fitzroy player kick a ball through, and as the ball went through the posts, the scoreboard operator hit the button, and the ball exploded.

What became of this experiment? Was it ever tried in any actual VFL matches?

That was a skit, probably off an old show called the Junior Supporters Club, which ran in the early 80s and was aimed at kids under 14. The exploding ball thing was just a joke.
And you'll never guess...but I heard the Easter Bunny is a hoax too

You will find I think that the Fitzroy player was Bernie Quinlan & the tape was produced on April 1 one year in the 80's. Remember my old man carrying on when they played it about someone getting hurt. Got quite a few in.

Correct goatmaster, It was an April Fools prank. Still working well 20 years on!
