If you think of 76 as their prototype Fallout similar to NV, this isn't one of the numbered games it's them trying something different.
New Vegas wasn't really an attempt at anything different. Actually it was arguably closer to the original games than F3.

76 is probably more comparable to Tactics in terms of being an different genre set in the same universe.

Also none of the main people from NV work at Obsidian anymore
That's a bummer. Still, it would be nice to see another Fallout in the hands of people capable of caring for the stuff that makes the world great.

The positive from this new direction is that (in theory) this is basically a spin off, and that a more traditional Fallout will be coming in the future. If you don't like the idea of it then don't buy/preorder it so that they see it's not what the people want. Also given the world is "4x bigger" and you're in a world with "dozens of other players", the chances of running into other people is fairly low.

There are still a lot of unanswered (or vaguely answered) questions, hopefully some of that is cleared up shortly...... particularly the multiplayer component. People are campaigners, I don't want to deal with them in a game like this, so unless I can severely restrict my interactions with random 11 year olds, neckbeards, and basement-dwellers I don't be getting it.

I am not excited by this based on what I have heard/seen so far. Fallout 4 was a grind for me and so far this looks like a won't bother. Hopefully I am wrong.

This from Howard.

We love mods, so we are 100 percent committed to [offering mods] in 76 as well,” Todd Howard said in a conversation with Geoff Keighley. “We will not being able to do that at launch, though. Our goal for launch — this is really new for us — is to have a well-running, robust service, and then some period later, we’re currently still designing what that service looks like, you’ll be able to have your own private world, and be able to mod it and do all of that.”

Bold text would suggest 100% online.

Going by that we'll have to wait for a true single player experience, and just hope online clowns don't ruin the game for us while we wait.

the fact the first words out of Todd Howard's mouth were 'Fallout 76 is entirely online' probably says that clearly enough :P

Sean Murray was quoted as saying No Man's Sky would be an immense and unique gaming experience for each Player and each play through*.....

Interviewer: “Can I play offline?”

Todd Howard: “You cannot. You will see, even if you’re playing by yourself doing quests, you will see other players. Um, and you can interact with them, you can ignore them, because there is a quest line. One of the main things that I saw feedback was, when we say there—there are no NPCs, okay, so that’s one of the big differences that we really leaned on, which is, every human, every character you see is a real person, but there are still robots and terminals and holotapes. So if you see a lot of the quests we do in Fallout 4 that are kind of this found world quest thing, we still do all of that. But then, so if you sort of picture doing those quests or you watch someone play Fallout 4, it’s like that, but then, as opposed to running into a gang of raiders, those are real players.”

Interviewer: “So there’s always PvP?”

Todd Howard: “Well, we. First of all, I’d say we’re still dialing that. We don’t want it to be griefy, but we wanna have some drama there. So there is a way that you can decide to do PvP, and we’re currently balancing kind of the incentives for someone who wants to be, uh, very aggressive to people, and those who want to ignore it. And that really comes down to, um, you know the in-game incentives and then also the social incentives. But I would say, we don’t want it to be griefy in any way, and we’ll dial it in so people can say, ‘Look, I don’t wanna deal with that.’”

Interviewer: “So you can pick? It’s like, I don’t want PvP?”

Todd Howard: “Well, we want a little bit of drama there without it ruining your game.”

Honestly seems like the are going the WoW model of being able to pvp flag yourself or potentially having pve and pvp specific zones, not sure how that will affect your buildings though.

I can't wait to get involved in the Beta test

Sean Murray is a raging bullshit artist though, at least Todd Howard has some credibility in the industry

One of the things that attract me to the Fallout Franchise (all the way back to when I first played 2) was the Lore of the world it was set. As long as it keeps in spirit of that I am ok with it. If it's a generic online bit a poop set in the Fallout Universe (that to me it is looking more and more likely), then no thanks.

So is it no NPCs or no people? Because they could have robot NPCs and mutant NPCs.

Interesting take in the death of subtlety in the series:

https://www.kotaku.com.au/2018/06/fallout-76s-approach-to-nukes-seems-like-a-shift-for-the-series/

Have to agree, particularly with the stuff once said ironically now intended at face value.

You see that absolutely everywhere in life now though.

Damn sarcasm. We didn’t understand its true power and we used it so much in the wrong forums with the wrong audiences that it ultimately became meaningless and consumed in the very opposite way it was intended.

Now that is truly irony.

It IS a different approach, however it's also basically a spin-off. Hopefully they keep this shit out of Fallout 5.
