You keep saying "smash it out" it takes one person to stop that. We did this last year and had the same problem, smashing it out, getting stuck at pick 4.

My vote is for a live draft with a 2 minute limit if that's available.

We discuss what we want in the league - number of teams, number of selections, do we have a captain, how the draft should unfold, etc.

(I know we've said some of this previously, but where we at?)

We are able to do 5 minute picks for the Sunday night, and when we finish drafting for the night, we can change the time limit of the picks halfway through to 12 hours or something like that to finish how ever many rounds are left, preferably only a few.

10 teams, 12 if we get the numbers.

30 selections? 22 on the field like DT? Definitely yes to captains.

I think no to captains. There's maybe three or four captain level players - it throws the league out if someone gets a double score from Swan each week. Fair enough they have swanny, but the double score is too much.

You say that but people that get picks 1-4 then get picks 17-20.
Its not necessarily an advantage to get picks 1-4. I won our league last year with pick 8 and picking Goddard with my first pick. The guy that was runner up had pick 6.

I think not having captains takes away the fun of it. And like dangersloane said, 1-4 might be the better players, but having picks 9 and 12 means you can pick 2 very very good captions options where you will be able to have twice as many games from your players against the crap clubs like demons, gws, saints etc.

It all works itself out in the end, which is what the snake order is designed to achieve.

Not to mention picking Swan, Ablett, Pendles means you've picked a mid and the lower selections can get a back/forward and a mid as their first two picks and possibly be ahead. When your 2nd pick is at 20, then you may miss out on the premium backs/forwards depending on how people draft. Its nowhere near as big advantage as it seems.

Didn't I win our league last year?

I had Ablett and Stevie J and realistically the game was over. There was probably only a couple of sides that had a player that was a comparable captain - Swan, Pendles, late in the season Selwood - and having captains impacted the game enormously. There are really only five true captain options, and it means those first five picks have double value.

Last year our league had only like 12 players per side scoring
This time we're going to have like 22 players per side scoring
That means its going to have almost 50% less impact.

Also if you pick tactically you can make the early pickers suffer positionally...trust me I played a 10 person 22/side league last year and while 3 of the first 4 picks made the finals, none of them made the grand final.

Also I was talking about my non big footy league.

Highest overall scorer here! Agree with Kristof, Captain gave me an unfair advantage. But being as stated 22 players... (18 would be plenty) dilutes the effect of the captain.

You were no where near winning our league! Kristof and myself were daylight ahead of the field. The competition was 2 horse race by midseason.
I had pick 1 and Kristof had pick 2. But to be fair we also drafted well and traded the best.

For the winner of our league you've already forgotten we played 3-3-1-3 with 5 bench last season. Captains on, and Auto emergency.

To be honest the league set up was not ideal, but sounds more promising this season.

Read what I wrote! Wasnt talking about this league.
Was talking about one i competed in which was similar to the one we're planning on playing this season.

When you have pick 1 and 2 in a 10 player per team game then its going to make a big difference. WHen you have pick 1 and 2 in a 22 player per team game then its going to make a lot less difference.

I dont get why this is so hard to understand.

The 2 first picks in our draft were owned by probably the 2 worst players in our league coincidentally. They both picked Ablett and Swan, and the guy who had no. 1 picked up Stevie J on the way back around also. We had no problem playing captains and beating them, as the rest of their team was poor in comparison to others.

Trust me, captains will not make much of a difference, but will only really come into play when you're in those close games against good opponents.

Boys sorry to take things into my own hands, but since the votes pretty much seemed to be in favour of UF ive gone ahead and created a league, considering we have 9/10 or 9/12 players. The link is here

Dont worry the rules have not been set in stone as of yet and im more than happy to continue discussing them in here and make changes accordingly. I just wanted to get this league created and the ball moving.

At this stage, draft day is set for Sunday the 3rd March at 7pm with 5 minute picks.

We still need one more person, so start asking around...
