Sad news that he has left the game and has no plans what so ever for his future beyond the Lions.

That's about all they said on TripleM but didn't say if it was effective immediately or what.

Lions' Pike calls it a day
Brisbane's four-time AFL premiership-winning player Martin Pike has announced his retirement.

The 32-year-old has been plagued by a groin injury and has not played in the Lions' senior side since round 10 against the Kangaroos.

Pike made his debut for Melbourne in 1993 before later moving to Fitzroy, and then North Melbourne where he was part of the Kangaroos' 1999 premiership-winning team.

He joined Brisbane in 2001 and played in all three of the Lions' consecutive grand final victories.

Man im gonna miss this guy, he really was a character on and off the field. He had genuine toughness but his body didnt wanna listen to his brain anymore. He was some sort of a cult figure at the Lions, will his gueurnsey be retired for a year too?

Pikey you're a ********ing legend mate. We also got a boost when you got the ball on the wing right underneath us. Whenever we messed around a bit too much, played it too cute, you'd grab the ball and roost it forward like it should be. "PIKEYYYYY" was the war cry, you personified that tough uncompromising football that got us three premierships. We'll miss you, mate.

 

[Chasing the Dream]

As I sit here pondering the retirement of one of last real characters of the game, I can not help but think of all of the laughs that he has given me over the past.

I for one, like a few others have mentioned will never forget his speech regarding Back to Back Premierships, or also his description of the sleeping habits of a couple of defenders who look very similar.

Who could also ever forget why he left the Kangaroos. I'd say nearly every player on the list was happy the coaches son was given a lesson (except for the coaches son). He simply did what every other player wanted to do.

Also seem to remember that in Fitzroys final days that he may have been mentioned as the ring leader in the renovations of a Sydney motel.

He has never said much over the years, but actions speak louder than words.
