The Mighty Cats
Just had a great conversation with a mate of mine thats a St kilda fan. He reckons that the Cats will go down as the unluckiest team in the last 20 years. Why so you ask?

In 1989 we had a great side but were beaten by a team that won five flags and played in seven straight GF and are regarded as one of the best teams ever.

In 1992 & 1994 we were beaten by another great team in the WCE. Only now are people realising what a great side they were.

In 1995 we were beaten by a side that only lost two games for the year. This was a record at that time.

Thats the past. Now the future. We all know that the Cats have a great side coming up and in four years time we will be at the top end of the ladder again. He reckons that our current crop of players are better than the Bulldogs and will provide the biggest threat to his team, the saints. I know its a long way off but I think he has a point. How are we going to beat them? If they keep all their players they are going to be an awesome side. We might have a great side that in other era's would win the flag but they have so many stars that it will be impossible to match up on them.

What do you guys reckon? Can you see us beating the Saints in the 2007 Grand Final? Will timing and fate be once again against us?

I doubt it.

In Nathan Burke's second year as senior coach, he's done a mighty job. Hocking is far tactically superior and has managed to keep a lid on things in Grand Final week. But the Saints look to have the answers where it matters.

There's no way the Launceston-based club can stop former hero Matt Maguire, while Jon Brown and Scott Lucas will continue to stretch St Kilda's undermanned defence.

If Rawlings can kick a bag, then the game will be over.

But all that is hypothetical.

What we know is this - Dal Santo, Bartel, Judd, Hayes, Ball, Goddard, Clarke, Clarke, Montagna and Fisher will have a field day in the midfield.

Geelong have the tall options up forward, but if they can't get the ball down there, then they won't get the chances.

My prediction is that Robert Harvey, in his 362nd and last senior game, will be hoisting the cup on Sunday Night at the Telstra Dome.

Very good ev, very good.

My mate said nothing about us having Brown, Lucas, and Rawlings. Don't know how we managed to swing those three but it sure would even up the contest.

I see we traded Bartel for Maguire, I hope we managed to get something else in that deal :p

I can just here the media now. No Brown, Lucas, and Rawlings, no Geelong. I will sleep well tonight knowing I will be watching a very entertaining team come 2007 :)

PS I've heard midfield's labelled the fab four, but the saints super seven! Thats just ridiculous.

We'd be lucky to get Rawlings, let alone the other 3 mentioned.

We'll have the best midfielder in the comp though, that's what you're all forgetting ;)

In 2 years time, Ling will be in the top 2 midfielders of the comp ;)

Geelong will eventually have it's time at the top of the ladder, and when that time comes, we have to make the most of it because if we don't, we could end up beating South Melbourne/Sydney's premiership drought record.

Geelong also created a new league record this season by wearing 22 different jumpers for it's home and away matches, beating it's previous record of 4 set in the 2003 season.

i THINK oUR aLL AUSTRALIAN PLAYERS RAPH CLARKE LING ABLETT AND JOHNATHON BROWN WOULD HAVE THE BIGGEST IMPACT,WHILE MOLONEY WHO JUST MISSED OUT WOULD GATHER UP SOME POSSESIONS TO HELP US TO WIN THE GRAND FINAL.

Not to mention the stellar performance of Peter Street, who narrowly avoided being delisted in '03 only to go from strength to strength to win 'Charlie' in '05, the same year David Clark won the handball comp.

No wonder this thread made no sense, it's from 2003. I didn't realise until somebody mentioned Maloney. HAHAHA I remember back in the good ol days when the Saints and the Cats looked forward to certain premiership success...........WHAT THE :D:D:D:D HAPPENED?

I know its a 2 year old thread with a serious acid trip spin to it but the four years still may be spot on.

The other day Tim Lane did an article on saying this season reminded him of us in 1990. To me its more like Brisbane , the team we are supposed to have been modeled on.I believe the Brisbane side made the finals in 96,97 and bottomed out after a meltdown in 98.The they picked up a FatherSon CHF, some of the lesser knowns seasoned and.... 4 years later they were at there zenith.

They had established a core group that had tasted then had the season from hell, they were representing a club that knew nothing but failure, they werent the joke, they were the punchline. As far as winning the big ones go we are the same and it will not change untill we bag one.

I dont believe in tanking but really Is there any of us that would say we wouldnt be willing to have 25 bad games to ensure a higher chance of success in the future.Im talking about ensuring we are not wasting positions on our list, giving every player a fair chance but assessing them with a ruthless eye. Yes , we may be able to top up with the mystical 06 draft but we must be very certain with all players on our list.If a player has peaked and seems to have little improvement left in him and he is mostly an in and out player then we should thank him for his efforts and move on.

sigh... reading those old posts sure is depressing... mostly coz I was among those who thought back in 2003 that this would be our time... Hope is the kryptonite of Geelong fans
