Oh crab, I have to buy a subscription for this?

There are some obvious speedsters, but an interesting one is Alex Keath who I find to be very quick for a giant. I think he recorded close to 35kmh during a match sometime?

Maybe he's not as fast during gameplay?

Puopolo surprises me. Maybe cos he's short and stocky, but he's good at short bursts and has good centre of gravity. Didn't know Greene was that fast.

There was also a moronic table showing their 100m times vs Bolt, which included a heap of dumb logic, so I left that out.

As for the numbers, Im not sure these are correct. O'Meara hit 35kmh in the final game of the year. And Im sure I saw an article where a player hit 36kmh.

It was in another thread and I asked about the accuracy and the response from a few was that the numbers are not that accurate, but that Etihad has a different measure which records speed more accurately.

One thing I'd like to know more about is those number of sprint recordings. What distance and what speed triggers a "sprint" being logged?

Seb Ross surely cannot be the 3rd fastest player in the AFL.

He probably isn't.

An AFL game is hardly a perfect environment to measure a players peak speed. All of these times reflect a speed reached while fatigued and most sprints on a footy field are relatively short so we'd rarely see peak speed.

No way could those guys run 10.2 for 100m holey moley. The top aussie sprinters, who train specifically for the 100m, who would spank any AFL player over 100m are only just running those times. rediculous article.

reminds me of when the AFL clubs were talking about how their players had elite level endurance running "olympic level" until Richmond organized a race with Craig Mottram who absolutely toweled them up.

Cricket background might've helped. Short bursts are required from time to time.

The measurement of 35.3 kms top speed does not translate to a 100m time of 10.1-10.2. A top sprinter takes about 40-60 metres to reach top speed. It is very rare for a player to run that far - (in football boots as well!).

Usain Bolt's top speed is about 44.1 KM/hr.

In Australian football, acceleration is more important than top speed.

Interesting. I remember back in around 2011 and 2012 when we had all of Garlett, Betts, Armfield and Yarran on the team I knew we had fastest team in league for a couple of years and our best weapon then.
Betts has always been quickest of mind in what he was doing, to get around other players but for leg speed on it's own when watching Carlton back then felt Army had them all and Garlett second. Not much between them all though. Now Betts and Garlett are at other clubs interesting to see neither Betts or Garlett were measured quicker then Amrfield. Also remember a game Dangerfield running at top speed and we all know he is quick but Armfield ran him down and dumped him easily in the end. Armfield is older now so probably dropped off a little and now retiring. I not sure figures are conclusive though but I have little doubt Armfield is no longer quickest at Carlton. Pickett looks quicker and when Tipps was on fire for Dons against us he ran down Tippa from behind easily so tipping he not played enough games when they measuring it to actually record it.

For mine just watching the play in general I would guess Pickett would be quickest in league followed by Jay Hunt and Gary Rohan. Charlie Cameron right up there too. Some players know how to use their pace best though and for that Hunt and Cameron most effective. Pickett still learning what he is doing out there. It was funny watching him against Hawks look so quick but still not know what to do with his own electric pace. When he learns how to use that weapon, watch out.

This moronic article took their "top speed" and extrapolated for 100m to compare to Bolt's 100m time. So no acceleration, just instant top speed.

A new level of stupid.

On the same measure Bolt does like 8.2 and beats them by 30 metres.

It also means the footy players can run a marathon in about an hour...

I think i heard that a sprint is defined as topping 24kmh for a set distance maybe 15 mtr. ...

Why is it that hard to believe? It's a different 'talent' but Blicavs can run national level times for the 3000 steeple etc. many players are drawn to the sport because of their own athletic skills so it shouldn't be that amazing.
