I think they also got the best from Andrew Schauble although I still think he would have been alright for us and he was very young when he left.

It was a mistake to let him go the same as with Sav.
I don't think Schauble was never the same at the Pies after he got crunched in that Essendon? game in 98? (from memory).
Essendon game in 1997 according to this: https://forever.collingwoodfc.com.au/players/andrew-schauble/

I find this ^ a bit of a strange write-up, since it focuses more on what he did at Sydney rather than his time at Collingwood! While Sydney probably did see the best of him, he still spent 6 years (79 games) with us, and then 6 years (88 games) with the Swans. It also suggests 1996 was his first year, but that was 1995, where he played 3 games.

He would have been about to turn 23 at the time he went to Sydney, so he certainly wasn't a youngster and we had given him quite a decent run. We traded Schauble for Mark Kinnear, who failed to play a game for us, and pick 34 (Leon Davis!).

Edit: I see the biography on Collingwood Forever is copied directly from Encyclopedia of AFL Footballers, which at least explains why it's not focused predominantly on his Collingwood career!

Plus they talk about him being rushed into the side because we lacked defenders. He debuted and played those 3 games in 1995 as a forward.

I was talking to a Tiger mate and this topic came up. We joke about how both of us could have got the Clokes but he said they refused to have Jason and Cam as part of the package.

Anyway he is very unhappy with David Bourke and Mark Pitura. He reckons that Pitura owed them because of a deal done in the past. He liked Joel Bowden.

For us, I think we stuffed up with Brad Oborne, Jaxon Barham and Brayden Shaw. I cannot remember Shaw's son playing a game.

I am happy with the ones at the club atm and think there will be a new Daics in a few years time.

Can anybody else think of some hits and misses?

Brayden Shaw was killing it in the VFL pre injury even to the point where MM was praising him as the "next Buckley". He got injured fell out of favor with MM on return from injury, apparently at his end of contract was unhappy with a single year offered and rumoured he met the club with his old man demanding senior midfield game time and Mick rail roaded him out the door from there.

Think it was mismanagement from all of MM, club and Shaws rather then a lack of ability with B.Shaw.

What happened to him? Did he go on to play football elsewhere?

I think though that Rhyce Shaw really only came into his own when he went north. Moore could be another that goes due to the salary cap pressures which is another reason. And also Peter Moore played for more than one club so he may be supportive of this move.
Peter Moore has gone on record stating that “He regrets not being a one club player”.
I doubt he would encourage Darcy to move on.

He had a long and successful career in the Northern Football League, but was forced to retire due to concussion at the start of last season. He played at Port Melbourne after leaving Collingwood (not sure how long he was there).

Peter Moore encouraged Trav Cloke to stay at the Pies saying you should only move if you're unhappy, not for money. He left because of the political situation at the time with the board.

If he continued to be played as that third tall/intercept marker that he was coming in, then he probably would have had more of a future at AFL level.

It was never a case of him being "found out" as far as I remember. Us playing a 189cm bloke as a key defender and ruckman due to lack of depth and injuries was never going to work well, so it wasn't surprising that he "didn't look up to it" when played in those roles. A big victim of our injury crisis and putrid depth in 2004-2005.

I think of a similar sized player who was played in similar roles early at another club around the same time, in Jason Blake. Once he was allowed to stay set in a more natural role, he was able to carve out a solid-if-unspectacular career. I don't see a reason Jason Cloke couldn't have done something similar.
All very good and valid points. Cheers

Oh your going that route.
Well no one else picked him up so must of been the right call.

Why beat around the Bush.

I find it odd that he was getting 30 and 35s in vfl being touted as next buckley by MM before getting injured losing form and rumoured Dad vs MM contract talks going south. We offered him another year in said talks too but they wanted garauntees apparently.

He had a rough first year iirc not showing a lot.

Maybe I'm remembering it wrong but anyhow he went from stud first part of year to dud by end of year according to MM high praise then flick.

Wasn't going any route. Just interested in what happened to Brayden. I remember being exciting by him as a prospect, but can't recall seeing him play. Enjoyed reading that article that 35Daicos posted and glad he went on to enjoy his footy.

Sorry mate I took it as the usual BF snark response and answered in kind. My apologies.
